Leadership Philosophy

I believe in leadership humility. When your team see you actively engaging them with questions about certain entities within the workplace, they immediately feel as if you are making a genuine effort to obtain their input on important decisions. This humility in leadership shows that you are not too proud to ask question and to ask for help when needed.
In 2011 I started teaching first grade students. At the beginning of the year I was asked to be our grade level team leader. All of the first grade teachers were new but I was asked to be the team leader because I was the first hire. The team before our team was plagued with unprofessionalism and wasn’t well organized. As a first year teacher I was terrified of making many mistakes and leading our team to further professional destruction. To minimize the first year damage I sat down individually with each team member to gage their excitement about the new school year, to learn about their teaching styles and to find out their strengths and weaknesses.
Through these conversations, I learned the strengths and weaknesses of each team member and how to come up with an effective plan for each person to pick up the slack in their team member’s area of weakness. Also, through these conversations I revealed to each of my team members my inexperience not only as a teacher but as a school leaders and how I would be relying on their given field of expertise to help my leadership style and vice versa. We designed weekly and monthly schedules that accommodated everyone’s strengths and we assigned projects to individuals based of their own personal passions.
Having humility in leadership showed me that, a group of people are more willing to follow your lead when they feel a part of a team effort and feel that you are leading in a very honest and transparent

A good leader would not be considered a good or effective leader if his or her followers always agreed with whatever the leader said. ...Personal Leadership Philosophy According to Rost, leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes. As much as I agree with this statement, I also have my differences. I would define leadership as a process dependent on interactive, “influence” relationships between people who intend substantial changes reflecting their mutual purposes. The essence of leadership lies in the process of influencing. Let's say that influence means one person's actions designed to change another person's attitudes, beliefs, values or behavior. Without influence we cannot exercise leadership. The process of influencing cannot occur without relationships between people that make that influence possible. I use the term “interactive” to show these influence relationships as being mutual, reciprocal and multi-directional. In other words, followers influence leaders, leaders influence followers, and peers influence each other. The words “leader” and “follower” are obvious by their absence in my definition. Specifically including those terms can mistakenly imply fixed roles or positions. Today, corporate has given way to team structures with more than one leader.
