1. What is your analysis of the situation facing Keller as he returns to Ukraine?

Firstly there is no doubt the situation with Dmitri Brodsky needs to be addressed. While this may seem like major issue there is even a bigger issue at hand for Keller that is actually about leading shelf.

The main issue that seems to be prevalent is that Königsbräu-Hellas A.E. stem is also geared with lots of young managers with following two problems that Keller is responsible for:
1. Performance Management (as indicated in Diitri’s case)
2. How to become and effective leader.

Keller himself is young, as such earning respect of his direct report as well and superiors posed challenge and the situation faced by Keller who:
- Micro managed
- Exhibited poor interpersonal skills

While Keller had great attributes like making key decisions; achieving results; overcoming obstacles and promoting innovation. His dominating style and inability to enjoy taking opportunity to coach and mentor& recognizing his teams’ contributions is clearly visible. The fact that the team drew the inverted structure also indicates that Keller became the funnel and restricting point for all decisions making.

Being empathetic or focusing on the emotional needs of his team; providing clear direction; or dealing with team members who do not meet his standards. Keller exhibits non-constructive leadership attributes from LSI point of view.

2. What are the underlying causes of Brodsky's performance problems?

Depending on how one looks at the issue, according to Keller, Brodsky’s performance problems are Brodsky himself:
- Incapacity to react to problems expeditiously
- Formal and distant management style hurt his effectiveness as a Sales Director
- Keeping personal life separate from professional life
- Formal interactions with field service

He has a clear vision that he shares with most of his team, and he is both self- and socially-aware. Keller follows three of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. The case study opens with the dilemma of Keller contemplating what he should do about Brodsky: The most pressing problem concerned Dmitri Brodsky, Königsbräu-TAK’s commercial director. As Keller saw it, he had three options. One option was to fire Brodsky or, at the minimum, not give him an annual salary increase, which might have the same effect. Keller suspected that firing him would not be well received by Königsbräu’s corporate headquarters, and Brodsky’s voluntary departure might also raise questions. A second alternative was to try, once again, to help Brodsky improve his performance. Design/methodology/approach – This paper analyzes the concepts of strategic positioning and sustainable competitive advantage and their interrelation. The qualitative study of three beverage producers is conducted. Cases are analyzed based on the theoretical models discussed in the first part of the paper. Findings - This paper provides comparison of positioning strategies and SCA of three international beverage producers. The theoretical framework on determinants of these concepts was developed and applied for case study. The concepts of SCA and SP are interchanging, but from the case study it was not possible to conclude whether one leads to another. There is no single theory found which would be universal in explaining the success of the brands. Companies are complex structures and their success depends on many different elements which should be analyzed in combination. Research limitations/implications – The findings are based solely on the case analysis of three unique beverage companies. As of January 31, 2007, Wal-Mart operated more than 3,400 U.S. Wal-Mart stores along with more than 550 Sam’s Club locations. Wal-Mart is the largest private employer in the United States, with 1.3 million employees, and the largest retailer in the United States. In 2004, Wal-Mart handled 6.5 percent of U.S. retail sales (8.8 percent if automobile sales are excluded); this number has since increased. Wal-Mart is the top U.S. seller of apparel, groceries, and music, among other products, and is the top retailer in most states. Wal-Mart’s 2005 revenues exceeded those of the next five U.S. retailers combined; these are Home Depot, Kroger, Sears Holding Company (which includes Sears and Kmart), Costco, and Target (Schultz, 2006).
