Learnscape 2 outlines the steps needed for processing a policy into a law. This module improved my understanding of the legislative process and how imperative it is to select the appropriate committee members to help build support for a policy. The importance of communication with the stakeholders is also reinforced. It is crucial to build momentum for the changes you are striving for make. As a nurse, I agree that most nurses are not interested in politics; however, we are a major component of implementing health care policies. It reinforced the importance of knowing who will be impacted and how communication is imperative in the process. One of the main focuses was monitoring and reporting compliance of policies. This process naturally makes some staff nervous about the consequences and fearful of being reprimanded. It is vital to establish an environment of no blame which will optimize the success of the policy. We learn from our mistakes and understanding barriers and issues with new policies help us improve the care that we provide to our patients. This module reiterates that the environment needs to stimulate autonomy for staff, yet balance the responsibility of doing what is right. As I viewed the module, I learned about the five health care core competencies, which are as follows: provide patient-centered care, work in interprofessional teams, employ evidence-based research, apply quality improvements, and utilize informatics. Even though I was familiar with the concepts, I did not know that they were known as the five core competencies. One of the most critical parts of monitoring and reporting is to establish a baseline for expected performance and clearly identifying a point of not being in compliance. Also, it is important to look at trends and assess risks that may occur. Root Cause Analysis is one helpfully way to find solutions to issues. It helps to ask the right questions.
