Lecture 44 and 45 AUTOMATIC GENERATION CONTROL

1.0 INTRODUCTION Maintaining power system frequency at constant value is very important for the health of the power generating equipment and the utilization equipment at the customer end. The job of automatic frequency regulation is achieved by governing systems of individual turbine-generators and Automatic Generation Control (AGC) or Load frequency control ( LFC) system of the power system. 2.0 FREQUENCY VARIATION IN A SINGLE MACHINE To understand the variation of frequency in a power system, we can consider a single machine connected to an isolated load, as shown in the figure below.

Fig.1 SINGLE TURBINE GENERATOR WITH LOAD

Normally, the turbine mechanical power (Pm) and the electrical load power (Pl) are equal. Whenever there is a change in load, with mechanical power remaining the same the speed (ω) of the turbine generator changes as decided by the rotating inertia (M) of the rotor system, as given by the following differential equation.. Pm-Pl = M [dω/dt ] The governing system senses this change in speed and adjusts steam control valve so that mechanical power (Pm) matches with the changed load (Pl). Speed variation stops but at a different steady value. The change in frequency (Δω) at steady state can be described using the following equation in terms of change in load (Δ Pl) and a factor R called ‘speed regulation or ‘droop’. Δω = - [Δ Pl ]( R) A 20 % change in load (Δ Pl = 0.2 per unit) causes 1 % change in frequency (Δω = 0.01 p.u) with a per unit (p.u) droop value of 0.05. Similarly full load throw off (Δ Pl = - 1.0)

Vigilantes in Modern Cinema

...Vigilantes in Modern Cinema: Dirty Harry and Taxi Driver The focus of this paper will be the vague distinctions presented between the criminal and the vigilante through an examination and comparison of the films Dirty Harry and Taxi Driver. The inquiry will be concentrated on a character analysis of the Dirty Harry's protagonist, Harry Callahan, antagonist, Scorpio, and Taxi Driver's (anti)hero Travis Bickle. These three characters will be reviewed in their relationship to violence, justice, and purpose. To start, I must admit that the film Dirty Harry struck me as terribly unrealistic. Harry Callahan and Scorpio appeared so absurd simply because they were so incredibly unambiguous, a quality that made the film smack of propaganda. The production crew of Dirty Harry did almost all the thinking for the viewer. At no point in the film would any rational viewer have condoned the actions of Scorpio or condemned Dirty Harry for doing his utmost to stop this incredibly perverse criminal. This was an exceedingly underhanded ploy that exploited the viewer's sense of righteous indignation by concocting exceptional situations where any abuse of jurisprudence could be easily pardoned by the spectator. After recognizing the very obvious fact that Scorpio is the archetypal “bad-guy” one cannot help but notice his doubtful persona. First he kills a woman swimming on a roof-top pool, why? Perhaps she was wealthy, he was making a political statement. Only Harry discovers his note...

Mathew 5:44 2 Few tasks an person faces are more emotionally or mentally challenging than that of managing conflict. And yet, conflict is a fact of life in this world, so it’s crucial that all people learn how to manage it with an eye toward positive closure. Over the course of a lifetime, every eperson will have countless opportunities to work with others through relational, philosophical and methodological differences. On occasion those differences may lead to personal strife, and the person’s opponent may appear to be an enemy. At such times the words of Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount will take on added significance: “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” (Matthew 5:44) What is Matthew...

Hostile Takeover

...THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE • VOL. LV, NO. 6 • DEC. 2000 Hostility in Takeovers: In the Eyes of the Beholder? G. WILLIAM SCHWERT* ABSTRACT This paper examines whether hostile takeovers can be distinguished from friendly takeovers, empirically, based on accounting and stock performance data. Much has been made of this distinction in both the popular and the academic literature, where gains from hostile takeovers result from replacing incumbent managers and gains from friendly takeovers result from strategic synergies. Alternatively, hostility could ref lect strategic choices made by the bidder or the target. Empirical tests show that most deals described as hostile in the press are not distinguishable from friendly deals in economic terms, except that hostile transactions involve publicity as part of the bargaining process. THE PERCEPTION OF HOSTILITY in American takeovers has had important connotations in both the popular and the academic literature. Unwelcome bids are often perceived to threaten at least some of the stakeholders in target corporations, leading to extensive defensive reactions by the management of the target firm. In contrast, friendly takeovers are often seen to create synergies that make both the bidder and the target firm better off ~see, for example, Mørck, Shleifer, and Vishny ~1988, 1989!!. The distinction between hostile and friendly takeovers is also important if removing an inefficient target management team creates the gains from hostile takeovers...

...THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE • VOL. LXIV, NO. 3 • JUNE 2009 Do Stock Mergers Create Value for Acquirers? PAVEL G. SAVOR and QI LU∗ ABSTRACT This paper finds support for the hypothesis that overvalued firms create value for long-term shareholders by using their equity as currency. Any approach centered on abnormal returns is complicated by the fact that the most overvalued firms have the greatest incentive to engage in stock acquisitions. We solve this endogeneity problem by creating a sample of mergers that fail for exogenous reasons. We find that unsuccessful stock bidders significantly underperform successful ones. Failure to consummate is costlier for richly priced firms, and the unrealized acquirer-target combination would have earned higher returns. None of these results hold for cash bids. THE LATE 1990S WITNESSED a large mergers and acquisitions wave. Many transactions involved equity as the mode of payment (Andrade, Mitchell, and Stafford (2001), Holmstrom and Kaplan (2001)), and this equity was usually very richly valued by historical standards. The positive correlation between market valuation and merger activity has also been documented in other periods (Martin (1996), Verter (2002)) and is especially strong for stock deals (Maksimovic and Phillips (2001)). One interpretation of this evidence is that managers try to time the market by paying with stock when they believe it is overvalued. Recently, a number of papers formally recognized this link between possible...

Pe Performance

...THE JOURNAL OF FINANCE • VOL. LX, NO. 4 • AUGUST 2005 Private Equity Performance: Returns, Persistence, and Capital Flows STEVEN N. KAPLAN and ANTOINETTE SCHOAR∗ ABSTRACT This paper investigates the performance and capital inf lows of private equity partnerships. Average fund returns (net of fees) approximately equal the S&P 500 although substantial heterogeneity across funds exists. Returns persist strongly across subsequent funds of a partnership. Better performing partnerships are more likely to raise follow-on funds and larger funds. This relationship is concave, so top performing partnerships grow proportionally less than average performers. At the industry level, market entry and fund performance are procyclical; however, established funds are less sensitive to cycles than new entrants. Several of these results differ markedly from those for mutual funds. THE PRIVATE EQUITY INDUSTRY, primarily venture capital (VC) and buyout (LBO) investments, has grown tremendously over the last decade. While investors committed less than $10 billion to private equity partnerships in 1991, they committed more than $180 billion at the peak in 2000 (see Jesse Reyes, Private Equity Overview and Update 2002). Despite the increased investment in the private equity asset class and the potential importance of private equity investments for the economy as a whole, we have only a limited understanding of private equity returns, capital f lows, and their interrelation. One of the main obstacles...

ERIK KNUTZEN ERIK K NUTZEN is the chief investment officer at NEPC LLC in Cambridge, MA. eknutzen@nepc.com FALL 2013 JOI-KNUTZEN.indd 75 I n the past several years, asset managers have built investment strategies based on historical evidence that lower volatility stocks earn superior risk-adjusted returns. These approaches are being called low volatility, managed volatility, minimum variance, or similar names. They seek to exploit what has been identified in studies by academics and practitioners alike as an equity pricing anomaly. This anomaly joins previously identified persistent stock market inefficiencies associated with low price-tobook and smaller company shares. This article evaluates the low volatility anomaly, its potential causes, whether it is likely to persist, and the role, if any, of low volatility equity investing in long-term investment programs. Based on historical information, we conclude that the low volatility equity anomaly appears to exist and can be explained by certain behavioral and structural biases of investors. But its continued existence into the future is less certain. We also observe that even well-documented anomalies experience multi-year...

Translation Quality

...TRANSLATION QUALITY ASSESSMENT Translation quality assessment has become one of the key issues in translation studies. This comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of translation evaluation makes explicit the grounds of judging the worth of a translation and emphasizes that translation is, at its core, a linguistic operation. Written by the author of the world’s best known model of translation quality assessment, Juliane House, this book provides an overview of relevant contemporary interdisciplinary research on translation, intercultural communication and globalization, and corpus and psycho- and neuro-linguistic studies. House acknowledges the importance of the socio-cultural and situational contexts in which texts are embedded, and which need to be analysed when they are transferred through space and time in acts of translation, at the same time highlighting the linguistic nature of translation. The text includes a newly revised and presented model of translation quality assessment which, like its predecessors, relies on detailed textual and culturally informed contextual analysis and comparison. The test cases also show that there are two steps in translation evaluation: firstly, analysis, description and explanation; secondly, judgements of value, socio-cultural relevance and appropriateness. The second is futile without the first: to judge is easy, to understand less so. Translation Quality Assessment is an invaluable resource for students and researchers...
