Beach as a Metaphor to Leadership

The characteristics of a leader encompass wide and intense learning through experiences and knowledge. There are numerous ways to understand and visualize the concept of leadership. And beach as a metaphor to leadership, decoding the hidden meanings.
Ocean waves that reach the shore, emerge from the same ocean, and travel miles to reach there, incorporating immense power to subsume anything on its way. Similarly leaders emerge from the same neighborhood and have that ability to reach the destination.
Also the concept of catching the right wave for the surfers who understands the rhythm of the waves to surf and ride in exemplifies the importance of optimal decision-making and utilization of the opportunities and resources efficiently. As to make a move while surfing its necessary to catch right wave at right time and get benefit from the power of the wave (Richardson, 2010).
Also beach attracts many due to its wide ability of letting people share their joy, sorrow and motivating in its own way, providing that fresh energy and enthusiasm and a large source of recreation. This is how a leader is, providing equal opportunities to all and sharing an openness to followers to state and exchange their ideas and thoughts.
Samsung android success story recites in the decision of taking Google’s Android mobile platform and create smartphones, capturing more than 50 percent of the smartphone market in less than three years, under chairmanship of Lee Kun Hee. “The company went from almost zero smartphone sales to quarterly sales of over 50 million units in two years, dwarfing the competition, including Apple” (Hughes, 2012). Samsung opted for android at that time when other companies like Nokia were reluctant and took the opportunity and turned to successful side, emerging as leader in mobile market.

...Hierarchy of Needs Theory In the 1940s, Abraham Maslow developed his hierarchy of needs theory,45 which is based on four major assumptions: (1) Only unmet needs motivate. (2) People’s needs are arranged in order of importance (hierarchy) going from basic to c omplex needs. (3) People will not be motivated to satisfy a higher-level need unless the lower-level need(s) has been at least minimally satisfied. (4) Maslow assumed that people have five classifications of needs, which are presented here in h ierarchical order from low to high level of need. Hierarchy of Needs The hierarchy of needs theory proposes that people are motivated through five levels of needs—physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization: 1. Physiological needs: These are people’s primary or basic needs: air, food, shelter, sex, and relief from or avoidance of pain. 2. Safety needs: Once the physiological needs are met, the individual is concerned with safety and security. 3. Belongingness needs: After establishing safety, people look for love, friendship, acceptance, and affection. Belongingness is also called social needs. EXHIBIT Major Motivation Theories 3.6 CLASSIFICATION OF MOTIVATION THEORIES SPECIFIC MOTIVATION THEORY 1. Content motivation theories focus on explaining and predicting behavior based on employee need motivation. A. GUILARAN Division of Social Sciences College of Arts and Sciences University of the Philippines Visayas October 9, 2012 2 Leadership Identity Development: The Influence of Fraternity or Sorority Membership on College Student Leaders Fraternities and sororities began more than a century ago as relationship building organizations in which leadership development could be cultivated (Cory, 2011) but until recently, research found that fraternity and sorority membership may hinder student development and negatively impact the wellbeing of college students (Maisel, 1990; Wechsler, 1996). According to Kelly (2008) benefits of membership are realized by fraternity and sorority student leaders but struggled to refocus on their espoused values and mission: scholarship, service, leadership and relationships over the last several decades (Cory, 2011). Conversely, incidents of hazing, alcohol abuse, sexual assault, and substandard performance in the classroom, often overshadow the benefits of membership (Cory, 2011) suggesting that fraternal organizations have strayed from their traditional and founding values (Garret, n.d.; Maisel, 1990)...

1- What Makes a Leader

...It's easy to get carried away with a position of power, so the best leaders are those who use their power for the betterment of everyone, not abuse their power for their own personal betterment. Furthermore, effective communication is also one of the characteristic of a good and efficient leader. He should be able to put across what needs to be done and how. At the same time, he should be willing to accept relevant suggestions from his subordinates. He should have the ability to listen, question, analyze and observe effectively. He should believe that actions speak louder than words. A leader who constantly changes his or her tune will confuse the team members and this will lower their productivity. A leader must therefore be consistent in his actions, his words, and in his thoughts as well. Leaders who are biased never make good leaders, so he should be completely neutral and should display consistency that amazes everyone. Thus, an efficient and good leader must also know how to co -operate with his team. He should get to know his team members should not appear as an overly strict and rigid personality. Finally as a good and efficient leader, a leader must have passion. They should not make the necessary courageous and difficult decisions and carry them into action. So, the people around the world should give respect for all the leaders. Thus, we also should encourage the leaders by giving importance to them and also become their followers. 3) Qualities of a successful person ...

Instilling New Leadership Behaviours in an Organization

...Instilling New Leadership Behaviours in the Organization Once an organization has gone through a traumatic “rightsizing” a leader must instill new behaviours and work with the survivors to rebuild the culture (or work with them to form a new one) and help make the “change” a smooth and positive process. Restructuring and other events are making leaders look to new ways to guide their companies through and emerge, with hard work and in time, a strong confident company. Leading Change How does a leader get trust back? How do they lead the change and make it a permanent fix? Dr. John Kotter contends that there are 8-steps for a leader to implement to facilitate leading a change and help the employees and organization succeed through a transition. (Kotter, ND). The stages are: establish a sense of urgency, form a powerful guiding coalition, develop a compelling vision and strategy, communicate the vision widely, empower employees to act on the vision, generate short-term wins, keep the urgency; tackle bigger problems, make the changes stick. As Alan Mulally wisely demonstrated, (as reviewed in the New Behaviours section above) with Ford Motor Company, he was able to get employee buy-in on a new vision, support them and nurture an optimistic culture. This change was successful because of the adherence to these steps and not rushing but guiding the workers through each step carefully and deftly. Further helping a leader to lead this change is open channel of communication with...

Leadership Qualities

...Qualities of A Good Leader Ledership Essay An efficient leader is defined as a person who is followed by the others. Besides that, a leader has to know about the human nature, and be able to direct people reducing the group's doubts about succeeding. Some people believe that a leader is born that way and there is no way, practicing or studying, to create a leader. They are wrong because inside of each and every one of us there is a leader waiting to be awake and holding on an opportunity to come out. A leader is capable of influencing and inspiring the people around him to voluntarily commit towards accomplishing a certain goal. There are different types of leadership people who specialize in trying to understand this important phenomenon. The only kind of leadership in which a person communicates true self are by way resonates with other people. This behavior is highly individual and situational for both the leader and follower and therefore there are a huge variety of ways in which effective leadership occurs. On top of that, when we think about the characteristic of a leader, we often think of leaders that are dynamic, which makes each of us to follow. We could take an example, such as Hitler.  He did not have the values that we should follow, but he had that inspiration for the country to follow.  If we also stop to think about the leaders today, we do not get the same vision of a leader that has a dynamism that is hard to resist, but rather a leader that has a good quality...

Academic Performance of 4ps Pupils

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION All school aims to improve teaching and learning. Though there are differences in how the school will go about it. The task of organizing, coordinating, monitoring and supporting teachers in their efforts to provide high-quality learning opportunities for students are important in developing instructional program that are needed for every classroom. As different as the approaches to school reform are, it lies on their success on the motivations and capacities of leadership. Change of improving student learning is quite complicated unless school leaders agree with its purposes and appreciate what is required to make it work. Instructional leaders must also, for example, be able to help their colleagues understand how the reform might be integrated into local improvement efforts, provide the necessary supports for those whose practices must change . In the hectic environments of schools, with the array of demands on leaders, principals and other leaders are generally viewed as unprepared to lead instructional improvement efforts (Levine, 2005). The ultimate goal of instructional leadership was to improve teaching, and meaningful supervision became the instrument to assist teachers in developing and growing in their professional knowledge, skills, and abilities. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK Leadership is described as power granted with the will of the followers. It is authority readily invested in a trusted person and thus qualifies as...

Break Through Ideas

...Introduction: According to Heskett, 2012, leadership requires many top noch qualities which includes: competence, interpersonal skills, administrative, should be a snooping follower, a virtuous eavesdropper, a quest of veracity, instigator as well as empathizer, no autocraticness etc. But the main delimas that organizations are facing today is how to motivate their employees in order to improve their efficiency which will halp them in sustaining their competative advantage. Teresa M. Amabile and Steven J.Kramer had provided a breakthrough idea to deal with the motivational issues i.e. “managers are a powerful influencer, they can provide their employees with stimulating yet attainable gaoals, resources, encouragement, should protect the employees from the irrelevant goals, to cut short he/she should provide him a podium to aid him headway with a sanguine attitude.” Leaders Role: To implement the idea the companies either need to train the existing leaders or higher new ones which are having such qualities. As Barbara Kellerman in her book “the end of Leadership”, says “Teaching how to lead is where the money is,". In current eon, the utmost important practice that every organization should adopt is to have their employees satisfied yet motivated only then you will be able to achieve sky high profits. We have many examples like 3M Corp. there is a creative time for them in which they are allowed to invent small things the sticky note was one of the ideas. Now the question is...

Prof. Dr. Chong Chin Wei – DBA/PhD/MPhil Malaysia 26th December 2012 MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION Are you born to be a leader? Are you a “natural”? Or is leadership a set of behaviors and competencies that anyone can develop, given the right experiences, circumstances, and training? Since the 1960s, researchers have examined whether there is a relationship between the basic agreed-on factors that make up personality and leadership. The Big Five personality factors are Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Openness, and Extraversion, which some researchers have labelled the CANOE personality model as an easy aid to remembering each factor (Bligh, 2009). As Tejeda (2001) asserts, “the past two decades have witnessed a great deal of scholarly attention transformational leadership behavior, which is currently the most widely accepted leadership paradigm” (as cited in Rubin, Munz, & Bommer, 2005, p.845). Transformational leadership behavior represents the most active/effective form of leadership, a form in which leaders are closely engaged with followers, motivating them to perform beyond their transactional agreements. Barling, Weber, and Kelloway (1996) demonstrated that some transformational leadership...
