“Legalize Gay Marriage”

In today’s society a big issue is whether homosexual couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples. About fourteen out of fifty states have generated laws that permit same sex marriage in that certain state. Five out of the fourteen states were decided by court decision these are; California, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey. Six out of fourteen states were decided by state legislature these include; Delaware, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont. The last three states were decided by popular vote and those states were; Maine Maryland, and Washington. Gay marriage should be legalized because people want to legally show their love for each other by getting a marriage license like a heterosexual couple, gay marriage is a legal issue not a religious matter (separation of church and state), and gay marriage should be made legal because of everyone has civil rights (country were all men created equal).
One reason to why gay marriage should be legalized is because people want to legally show their love for each other by getting a marriage license. For ages people have honored their love for each other by legally getting married. Heterosexual couples get married and divorced every day, so there is no reason why homosexual couples shouldn’t be allowed that civil pleasure as well. One thing that some people may like to argue is there is another way that homosexual couples can get legally tied together without getting married. They could do this by getting a Civil Union, though are different from marriages.
According to the First Amendment separation of church and state was ordained to the U.S. Constitution. Gay marriage is a legal issue, not a religious matter. There should be a separation of church and state where marriage is concerned. A Justice of the Peace can legally marry people, so churches are not required to marry homosexual couples if it breaches their doctrine and beliefs. Which means that the law needs to be passed only on the fact on whether or not it’s their civil right to have or not.
Gay marriage should be made legal based on whether or not it is their civil rights or not. If we truly live in a country where all men are created equal, then that should mean in regards to everyone, regardless of their race, religion, or sexual preference etc. Homosexuals are also hard working citizens of this country. Gay people pay taxes in this country just like everyone else does so they should be able to get married just like heterosexual taxpayers.
In society today a big issue is whether homosexual couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples. The biggest concern is the right to marriage. Gay marriage should be legalized because people want to legally show their love for each other by getting a marriage license like a heterosexual couple, gay marriage is a legal issue not a religious matter (separation of church and state), and gay marriage should be made legal because of everyone has civil rights (country were all men created equal). A great way to help legalize gay marriage in each state so it can’t get changed is by making a case with the supreme court of each state petitioning for the right to marry, because the supreme court already knows it is a violation of someone’s civil rights to say no the case would get passed. The only reason they do not have gay marriage in so many states is because people haven’t been taking it to the Supreme Court which is the final law, they just been voting on it.

Legalize It or Not: Gay Marriage

...society is gay marriage, and whether or not it should be legalized. I personally think it should be because it doesn't affect society, and if two people love each other why shouldn't they be able to get married. I don't understand what the big deal is, if you don't support it, you don't have too but it shouldn't really effect those people, it should only effect the people that are gay or support the cause. Many people don't see the good in legalizing gay marriage such as adopting children, when couples are married it is easier for them to adopt children, so you can give thousands of children a better home. If this issue was reversed, and we were fighting for the legalization of heterosexual marriages, how would all the non-supports of gay marriage feel? Society isn't effected by two people getting married, if it was then marriage in general would probably not even exist if it caused that many issues. Not only is society not effect, no one else is for that matter. “A marriage is a relationship between two people. How does it hurt society or people not involved in the marriage? It is a personal commitment that really is no one else's business. Society shouldn't be dictating what two people can or can't do when no one else is hurt in the process. If the church or certain groups disapprove, that's their right, but it isn't their right to stop it”(Messerli). Marriage is a good thing, and it will benefit gay families, and their children without causing harm to anyone. Gay marriage may be...

Gay Marriage in China

...Same-sex Marriage in Mainland China Sun Wenlin, the 26-year-old plaintiff, walked out of the court hand-in-hand with his partner, Hu Mingliang, and said he would appeal. Their case was heard at a court on April 13, 2016, in Furong district, Changsha city, Hunan province. The lawsuit was brought by the couple, who were challenging the decision of a local civil affairs bureau that had denied them the right to marry. The case was dismissed after an open hearing that lasted three hours and was held before an audience of nearly 200 people, including many journalists. It was the first case of its kind in China in which gay people had tested whether same-sex couples have the right to marry. While homosexuality is not illegal in China, same-sex marriage has not yet been explicitly legalized. Same-sex marriage, also known as gay marriage, is marriage between people of the same sex, either as a secular civil ceremony or in a religious setting. The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriages. Since then, same-sex marriages have been performed in more than 20 countries. Nowadays, in mainland China, no same-sex marriage or civil union is recognized. The Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China explicitly defines marriage as the union between one man and one woman. No other form of civil union is recognized. As early as two decades ago, homosexuality was a taboo subject. However, with social development, Chinese people have become more open-minded about a variety...

The debate has spanned over a decade with little change for either side. The issue of gay marriage is not just about the name of what the union is called, but the right to be able to legally join as homosexual couples with the same rights as heterosexual couples. Reasons for someone to be in favor of this topic are that there should be a separation of religion and politics, it deprives homosexuals of their natural rights, and this issue has escalated to violent hate crimes towards homosexuals. As it stands, currently 9 million adults are homosexuals, representing 4 percent of the 18 and over population in the United States with no signs of diminishing. Public administrators have done little...

Gay Marriage

...Gay Marriage Nearly seventy percent of people in the U.S. oppose gay marriage, almost the same proportion as are otherwise supportive of gay rights. This means that many of the same people who are even passionately in favor of gay rights oppose gays on this one issue. Because there is a lot of misunderstanding about what homosexuality really is, as well as the erroneous assumption that gay people enjoy the same civil rights protections as everyone else. There are also a lot of stereotypes about gay relationships, and even a great deal of misunderstanding of what marriage itself is all about. The purpose of this essay is to clear up a few of these misunderstandings and discuss some of facts surrounding gay relationships and marriage, gay and straight. Stereotype has it that gays are promiscuous, unable to form lasting relationships, and the relationships that do form are shallow and uncommitted. As gays age and mature, just like their straight men, they begin to appreciate and find their way into long-term committed relationships. The values that gay couples show in their daily lives are sometimes even better from their straight neighbors. They're loyal to their mates, and are devoted partners. They value and participate in family life, are committed to making their neighborhoods and communities safer and better places to live. A benefit of gay marriage is the fact that the commitment of marriage means the partners are less likely to have casual...

Mapping an Argument

...The first article I chose to examine was the “In the Weeds” article by Amelia Thomson-Deveaux. The primary issue at hand in this article was the legalization of marijuana here in America. Washington and Colorado recently became the first two states to legalize the recreational use and sale of marijuana. This article touched on how those states came to legalize recreational use, what the future holds for these states since they’ve legalized marijuana, and how the other 48 states can and/or will go about legalizing marijuana. One stated premise I found in this article was that Washington passed a law legalizing marijuana before Colorado did in 1998. Another premise I found was that Washington legalized marijuana on December 6th 2012. An unstated premise would be that the author is a supporter of the legalization of marijuana and I gathered this from her tone in the article. In conclusion this article was written to educate others on how Colorado and Washington were able to legalize marijuana. It included information on how marijuana is taxed, who wrote up the bills that were made into laws and even information on how many other states have legalized marijuana. I believe that the author is a supporter of the legalization of marijuana based on her tone in the article. I believe that the legalization of marijuana could help America a lot especially when it comes to reducing the national deficit. As a country we continue spending and giving money we don’t have to other...

...The benifits of Same-sex Marriage I. The scope of same-sex marriages issues are far-reaching than the marriage itself. It was helpful business if we legalized gay marriage. For there are many different views on the same system of marriage, and I divided into three part to discuss the benefits after legalize same-sex marriage for country, society, and individual. II. Start from country, ask people to give same sex couples a different sexual orientation and basic respect. And also, give same-sex couples the same rights with heterosexual people. Issue Proposal on Same-Sex Marriage

...Same Sex Marriage in the US. Gay marriage is an issue in America because gay and lesbian couples are wanting to be able to get married but a lot of people believe that it is wrong. Some people believe that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Others think that anyone should be able to marry whoever they want regardless of what gender they are. This issue is important to me because it is relevant to my life. I am a lesbian and I have a girlfriend that I would like to marry someday. Not only me, but other gay Americans, such as Ellen DeGeneres, may want to marry their partners one day as well, but cannot because the government will not allow it. I think that gay marriage is a good topic for me to research for the entire semester, because I know that it is a major issue in the U.S and people are fighting for or against it constantly. This topic is very dear to me and relevant to my life, so I definitely have the passion to write about it for an entire semester. Even before I was with a girl I was interested in this issue. I have had gay friends all throughout my life and always thought that it was unfair that them and their partners could not legally get married even though they had been together for years. I have always been a supporter of the gay community and a supporter of same-sex marriage. What I already know about the topic is that some religious groups, such as the Westboro Baptist Church, and political parties, such as the Republicans, are against gay marriage...

Same Sex Marriage

...“Do you agree to legalize the same-sex marriage here in the Philippines?” “Marriage is about LOVE, not GENDER”, this is what the gays and lesbians wanted to say. Nowadays, this issue, the same-sex marriage is viral in the whole world. But, what is same-sex marriage? It is defined as a union between two people who are of the same gender or biological sex. Since 2001, ten nations and other jurisdictions have made this type of union legal. Whether or not to recognize such marriages remains a source of debate as far as civil rights, political and social issues go. Introduction of same-sex marriage laws has varied by jurisdiction, being variously accomplished through legislative change to marriage laws, a court ruling based on constitutional guarantees of equality, or by direct popular vote (via ballot initiative or referendum). The recognition of same-sex marriage is a political and social issue, and also a religious issue in many countries and debates continue to arise over whether people in same-sex relationships should be allowed marriage or some similar status (a civil union). Same-sex marriage can provide those in same-sex relationships who pay their taxes with government services and make financial demands on them comparable to those afforded to and required of those in opposite-sex marriages. Same-sex marriage also gives them legal protections such as inheritance and hospital visitation rights.  Various faith communities around the world support allowing those of the...

Gay Marriage

...Sample Final Exam Essay: Legalize Gay Marriage English—Mr. Fichter (This sample essay is based upon a student-written essay from last year. The student author is anonymous.) Homosexuality is everywhere. You can see it in books, on television, in the media; it is rapidly becoming a social norm. Given this trend of greater acceptance of gay marriage, the issue of whether to legalize same-sex marriage naturally arises. Massachusetts has led the way by legalizing gay marriage. Responding to this example, some states have taken steps towards accepting gay marriage while others are considering laws and constitutional amendments banning gay marriage within state borders. President George Bush has recently proposed a ban on gay marriage in the U.S. Constitution (Hulse). If Americans carefully examine the situation, however, they should all be able to understand the importance of making same-sex marriage legal in the United States. Those opposing same-sex marriage claim that by allowing this act, marriages everywhere will lose their honor and validity (Kurtz). Marriages between a man and a woman would lose their special importance, these opponents argue, if the definition of marriage is expanded to include same-sex couples as well. The test of time has proven this fear pointless. For several years, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands have allowed gay marriage without any signs of damage to heterosexual couples. Social life in these countries continues unchanged, and...

Marriage for All

...Marriage For All Rebecca Hillman PHI 103 Instructor Anaya 12/9/2013 While religious people feel that it is a great sin, Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Transgender (LGBT) marriages can be politically beneficial to politicians and lawmakers because if same-sex marriages were legalized the discrimination against homosexuals would be reduced. The over 400,000 foster children in the United States would have a better chance for a happy home, and same-sex marriages would help with the economic issues America faces. First, LGBT marriages can be politically beneficial to politicians and lawmakers because if same-sex marriages were legalized the discrimination against homosexuals would be reduced. An article on HuffingtonPost.com, by Jillian Berman (2013), states “Considering about half of Americans say they are in support of same-sex marriages.” Gallup's May 2-7 poll suggests Americans' support for gay marriage is solidifying above the majority level. Recently, Rhode Island and Delaware legalized same-sex marriage, and Minnesota is likely to follow suit. That would bring the total number of states legally recognizing same-sex marriage to 12 (Gallup Politics, May 13, 2013). Another huffintonpost.com article, by Murray Lipp, claims that “by making same-sex marriages legal, would affirm the inherent worthiness of LGBT people as valued American Citizens deserving of equal rights under the law.” Since about half of Americans support same-sex marriages, politicians would benefit...

Same Sex Marriage

...Same Sex Marriage: Why is it Still Illegal in Some States? The right wing conservatives think it's a decision And you can be cured with some treatment and religion A world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are And a certificate on paper isn't gonna solve it all But it's a damn good place to start Whatever God you believe in We come from the same one Strip away the fear Underneath it's all the same love The words above are song lyrics excerpted from Macklemore and Mary Lambert’s song Same Love. Today, this song is considered the theme song of the American gay liberation front. In its early weeks, however, it received wild criticism. Apparently, people did not expect this to come from Macklemore. Mary Lambert is openly gay, so people did not have problems with her speaking out for the LGBT community. Macklemore, on the other hand, was straight. As a consequence, people raised their eyebrows in disapproval. To many listeners, Macklemore is in no way qualified to represent the LGBT community as he is not one of them. This incident is particularly telling of just how far America is from real gay liberation. At present, only 16 of 50 states legalize same sex marriage. California, Connecticut, Iowa and Massachusetts legalized same sex marriage by court decision. On the other hand, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont all gained equal marriage rights by state legislature. Meanwhile, Maine, Maryland, and...

...considered “good” are now considered to be “evil”.  In other words, our culture is literally being turned upside down, and the “values” that our national leaders speak of today are far different from the “values” that our grandparents grew up with. Nowadays the values the U.S are much worst than long ago. There is still racism in some parts of the states, which leads to whites killing blacks for little or no reason. Instead they do something about that, they choose to legalize abortion and gay marriage, which is genocide in a sence. Instead of reproducing kids so they can become our future doctors or lawyers, they choose to abort the child without giving the child a chance to live. Abortion is another form of killing which is against what god stands for. Legalizing gay marriage was the worst thing that they could have done. When they legalize that abomination, it sent a message to America that it is ok to be gay. Now more people are going to come out of the closet about being gay. In my eyes I see gay people as terrorists. Because of all of the killings and the “terrorists” that decide to be...

Human Rights

...Gay Marriage Research Paper Did you know that only 17 states in the United States have officially legalized gay marriage? Some of these states include: California Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. Maryland became the first state to pass a statute banning marriage between same-sex couples on January 1st, 1973. Then, President Bill Clinton signs the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into law on September 21st, 1996. The DOMA mandates unequal treatment of legally married same-sex couples. 3 years later, California becomes the first state to create a domestic partnership statute, on September 22, 1999 allowing same-sex couples to receive some, but not all, of the protections afforded by marriage. (History and Timeline of the Freedom to Marry in the United States). Gay marriage should be legalized in all states because it will boost the economy, it will provide health benefits for the couples , more children will get adopted, and because it can allow same-sex couples to visit their spouse in case they are at the hospital. Making gay marriage legal will boost the economy for sure. Why you ask? It is because the more marriages there are, the more money the state earns. Same-sex couples spend at an average of $9,039 on their weddings, while 31% spent $10,000 dollars or more. New York statistics show that after the first year of legalizing gay marriage, they gained $259 million dollars. (CNNMoney) . Also, according to a 2005 Stanford study cited by the Fiscal Times...

Ethics

...you think same-sex marriage should be legal? Some cons of gay marriage is that it will legalize other marriages. Like, fathers and daughters, people and animals and group marriages. Also, it will raise taxes and people should not have to pay for things they do not believe in. Gay couples cannot have children. They would have to adopt or find a surrogate mother. Children need both a mother and father. A father and mother both play very different roles in a childs life. With same-sex couples it might confuse the child and they might not get the same relaptionship a hetrosexual couple might give their child. A child might be confused if they have two moms or two dads. They might end up gay because they are being persuaded by their parents. Allowing gay marriage could change the intuition of marriage. People in further generations might be confused and persuade other people it’s okay for this to happen. Homosexuality is unnatural, it’s not how humans have been in past generations. Also, it’s not what’s in the bible. It’s not what God intended for people to be. God said it’s a sin and unnatural. Everyone has a right to their opinion and it should be up to the person what they want to believe in or not. Would you want to be denied your right to be married? Denying a person a right to marry is unethical. Marriage is a right to all human beings and should be allowed everywhere and to anyone. There are thirty seven states where same-sex marriage is legal. Gay marriages can bring financial...
