Reading Journal #8

I have just finished reading a book called “The Bad Beginning” by Lemony Snicket. This is the first book in the “A Series Of Unfortunate Events” series. The genre of this book is Mystery.

This book is about Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, three very unlucky children. Violet Baudelaire, the eldest, likes to invent and build strange devices. Anyone who knows Violet can tell she was thinking hard because her long hair would be tied up in a ribbon to keep it out of her eyes. Klaus Baudelaire, the middle child, and the only boy likes to examine creatures. Klaus is twelve years old and wears glasses, which makes him look intelligent, which he is. He loves to read …show more content…
First, their parents left a great fortune for them that they can collect when Violet turns of age. Second, the whole world knows about the fire and fortune because it is all over the newspaper thanks to Mrs. Poe (a reporter). Who knows what kind of people can chase the Baudelaires just for the fortune! Third, The Baudelaires must live with a tall, shiny-eyed, greedy, and vicious man that has a creepy eye tattoo on his ankle named Count Olaf. Fourth, the Baudelaires can’t do anything (call the police, run away, and etc) to stop him because he is their legal guardian. Finally, Violet must marry Count Olaf or Sunny will die. The Baudelaires must survive with one bed, many chores, cooking for a theater troupe, a locked up Sunny, and Count Olaf’s evil …show more content…
For instance, when Count Olaf provided the Baudelaires with only one bed, the Baudelaires found ways to sleep more comfortably, and most importantly, fairly (ex, Klaus and or Violet and or Sunny can’t hog the bed). They did this by making a sleeping schedule: Sunny sleeps on the curtains, and Klaus and Violet take turns sleeping on the bed. Another example is when Violet had to marry Count Olaf. The Baudelaires quickly went to a library where they studied the law and marriage while Sunny was locked up. Count Olaf found them and dragged them back home. Klaus, being himself, quickly grabbed a law and marriage book. He found out that Count Olaf was going to steal their fortune and Violet was allowed to marry Count Olaf if the legal guardian let her, she signed with her writing hand, she says I do, and a judge is present. Klaus stayed up all night reading while Violet tried to save Sunny with an invention she made. Violet, being herself, found out a way to free Sunny and not marry Count Olaf. That’s what I call

...Primary Sources Assignment Newton, John. “Amazing Grace.” Hymns of the 49th Parallel. 5th ed. New York: Baptist Hymnals Publishers, 1974. In the world of music, there are many songs that bring one joy, excitement, or delight. In other cases, there are songs that lead one to sadness, depression, or loneliness. However, there are also significantly few songs that reach down to the very depths of your heart and touch you in a way that is truly moving. This sort of emotion was felt when I heard the hymnal “Amazing Grace” by John Newton, and is still felt today. As a young child, I never really understood the complexity of the Holy Bible, the stories within it, or the ‘grace’ that is so freely offered. I often admittedly fell asleep in church or simply passed the time away by drawing funny pictorials of biblical characters I was supposed to learn about in Sunday school. Considering I was just like the other typical rebellious eight year old boys, this was quite acceptable in my opinion. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until one special Sunday evening service that I finally ‘came of age.’ The standard ‘boring’ service went on as it usually did and as the preacher summed up his message, my mother, the piano player, made her way up to the front of the sanctuary. As she began to play, the choir began to sing. I began to listen, and my heart began to melt. What was this song they were singing? Surely I had heard it. Only this time it was different. The melodious words, “Amazing...
