Case Study - Acer's Growth Strategies

...Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) and 21% of Lenovo Group Ltd. In the first quarter of 2008, the company sustained its performance and its market share grew to 9.5%. Its growth rate of 25.2% was higher than that of Dell Inc. (Dell) and Lenovo. Analysts felt that the company had come a long way since 1994 when it was the number eight player in the global PC market. According to analysts, Acer's rapid growth could be attributed to the restructuring efforts the company had taken up since the year 2000. Acer's restructuring enabled the company to realize lower operating expenses which provided the twin advantages of allowing it to price the PC aggressively and offer higher incentives to its channel distributors. Acer also refocused its marketing efforts from direct sales to indirect channel driven sales. The company opted for achieving growth through building strong relationships with its dealers, by offering lower prices to the consumers and providing unique product innovations. By 2007, Acer was the fourth largest computer company behind HP, Dell, and Lenovo. As a part of its growth and expansion strategies, Acer acquired Gateway, Inc. (Gateway) in 2007. This acquisition also resulted in the acquisition of Packard Bell (a major player in the Western European PC market) by Acer as Gateway had a controlling stake in Packard Bell. The acquisition also established Acer as the third largest computer company. In India, Acer partnered with Wipro Infotech Ltd. in the initial years. In the...

Lenovo belongs to the Legend Holdings Group. Lenovo is the world’s third largest manufacturer of personal computers (PCs), after Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP). In 2002 the Chinese government announced its ‘go global’ policy by encouraging Chinese companies with the capabilities and know-how to expand abroad. Lenovo, as a leader in the IT sector, responded to this government initiative. In 2003 Legend adopted a new brand name, Lenovo. The first two characters, ‘Le’, were taken from ‘Legend’, to reflect its heritage, and ‘novo’ (‘new’ in Latin) to signify the ‘spirit of innovation’ that is central to the company’s mission.1 Mr. Liu is the principal architect behind his company’s 2004 acquisition of IBM’s PC Division (PCD), and hence is commonly referred to in the press as the ‘Man who acquired IBM PC’ (Shenzen Daily, 2004). Even though the size of the acquisition was relatively small in the broader context of global mergers...

...country’s consumer PC segment, market research company Gartner Inc said. The struggling computer maker held a 10.4 percent share of the Indian PC market in the three months ending in September, compared with a 15.7 percent share a year ago, Gartner said in its latest report. The shrinking market share left Acer ranked as the fourth-largest PC vendor in India, down two spots from a year earlier. It was knocked out of second place by US rivals Dell Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co (HP), which took advantage of growth in the commercial PC sector. HP doubled its market share from a year earlier to 32.5 percent in the third quarter to seize the top spot, while China’s Lenovo Group Ltd (聯想) trailed far behind in second with a 13.7 percent share and Dell ranked third with an 11.8 percent share, the report said. Indian vendor HCL Infosystems Ltd rounded out the top five with a 2.8 percent market share. The combined desktop and mobile PC market in India totaled nearly 3.2 million units in the third quarter of the year, 7.9 percent higher than in the third quarter of last year, driven by large government orders, according to Gartner. “Consumers accounted for 40 percent of total PC sales in the third quarter of 2013 compared to 47 percent in the third quarter of 2012,” said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner. “This emphasizes the fact that despite the festive season and availability of various end-user schemes on PCs, the market was impacted by high inflation, global economic...

...If we were to have you list the worldwide smartphone market share leaders, we bet nearly everyone would put Samsung at #1 and Apple at #2. But who's #3? LG? HTC? Sony? The correct answer would be "None of the above." Gartner recently released their smartphone market share numbers for Q3 2014, and the #3 spot is pretty much a three-way tie. Right behind the two leaders are a trio of Chinese companies: Huawei, Xiaomi, and Lenovo. The actual market share numbers for Q3 2014 break down to Samsung at 24.4 percent, Apple at 12.7 percent, Huawei at 5.3 percent, Xiaomi at 5.2 percent, and Lenovo at five percent. At this time last year, Gartner reported Xiaomi was only at 1.5 percent market share, so the company has experienced a 336 percent jump. The big loser of the group was Samsung, which dropped 7.7 percent from last year. The company is still coming back down to earth after a record 2013, and it expected a 60 percent profit drop in Q3. What's amazing about Xiaomi is that hit Top 5 market share while only being in a handful of markets. The company's primary market is its home country of China, and it also does business in Malaysia, Singapore, and India.
