Leona Tyler was born on May 10, 1906. She was born in Chetek, Wisconsin to Leon Tyler and Bessie Carver Tyler. Leona had three siblings and was greatly influenced by her mother. Her mother treated her equally to her brothers and she encouraged her children to receive higher education because neither she nor Leona’s father pursued higher education. Leona was very smart so she was able to skip some grades and graduate from high school at the age of fifteen then she went on to graduate college at age of nineteen. Tyler got her Bachelors degree at the University of Minnesota at age 19 and a Ph. D in psychology at the University of Minnesota. After graduating Leona did what most women that were highly educated did back in those days, she taught school. After teacher her students for a number of years Tyler found disciplining the students to be no longer desirable to her. Tyler taught at several institutions following her graduating college. These institutions included Muskegon Heights and University of Oregon. Tyler was fascinated by the things she read in the writings of her students and how diverse the writings were, which fueled her interest in individual differences. She got to see firsthand how some forced choices and pressures of life would shape her students’ futures. Tyler opened a counseling center for soldiers returning from WWII where she spent one third of her time counseling. With all the resources she had to make money Tyler was able to publish her first book in 1947 entitled, “The Psychology of Human Differences”. After all her years of study, teaching, and counseling Tyler came up with the theory of possibilities. Her theory states that all creatures are characterized by multipotentiality (http://www.webster.edu). She explained that even though people have many possibilities to become different things as that person grows only few of those potentialities become an actuality whether it is missed unconsciously or consciously. Tyler came up with the Choice Pattern Technique to determine cultural differences by individual choice. In these techniques she would give the patient a set of cards that he or she would have to put into groups according to what they were interested in and what he or she was not interested in. After sorting the cards the patient would have to explain why the cards got put into the groups they were put into. She found out from using this technique on students of multiple cultures that the more of an influence the environment had on a career choice, the less the choices. Her test also showed that when it came to careers dislikes and things that people wanted to avoid were more important than the things they liked, this would be a major finding for those psychologists in the future. Her technique proved so accurate that it is still used today in career counseling. Leona wrote at least 100 articles and books. Some of her works are “Clinical Psychology”, “Developmental Psychology”, and “Individuality: Human Possibilities and Personal Development of Men and Women”. Her books were widely used and all her work was widely accepted. Leona was active in many areas of life besides her professional life. She also took a part in many community and professional services. She served as a member of the Amnesty International and other peace organizations. She was a strong believer in the movement towards peace and she showed this in every aspect of her life. Leona was always so kind, honest, trust worthy, and fair that people often looked to her for her intelligence and everyone respected her. All of these unique qualities assisted her in her position as the Dean of the University of Oregon. Throughout her lifetime she received many awards and rewards not limited to being made president of the Oregon Psychological Association and also being president of the Counseling Division of the American Psychological Association. She also received the award for an honorary doctorate from Linfield College and a University colloquium series on her eightieth birthday. Leona Tyler was a very smart woman with a very strong support system. All the support she received from her parents gave her the drive to go to college and use her knowledge from her students and past experiences to come up with the construct of organized choices. Leona’s studies gave her the knowledge to come up with a test that allows psychologists to see what causes people to make the choices they make in their lives. Her lifetime contributions have got her many rewards before and after death. She was a great woman with a great mind who provided great contributions to the world of psychology.

Blind Is Not Enough

...Ariel Johnson CRTW 187 Final Project Blind Is Not Enough Dear Doctor Pritchard, I am sad to inform you that these are my final hours. I believe it my duty to tell you, my most loyal doctor—and though it may not be appropriate—I dare to call you my dear friend. I have come to conclusion that my life must end today. This may come as a surprise to you, I’m sure, but there is nothing left for me now. I suppose you would be wondering why? I fear I have not been entirely truthful with you, though, I assure you my dishonesty was not always on purpose, as you will see. You see, there are parts of my life’s story I have left out of our sessions and I believe it is time you learned the truth, as have I. My name is not John Hatchet but rather Julio Antonio Hernandez-Bulkeley de a Villa Llorando Tortuga. My mother, born Mary Marie Bulkeley, a woman of Welsh descent, met my father Marceliano Estévan Hernandez, an Argentinean, in Peru. My father was on business and my mother was said to be on a church trip to help the homeless. My mother had been wandering through the market place when she quite literally ran into my father. As my father tells it, “I felt her sweet hand brush against my wrist, just below my gold watch, and I knew at that moment I never wanted her to leave my sight again.” My father took her back to live with him on his cattle ranch and that is where I raised, knee deep in manure, from the day I was born until the age of thirteen. This you know to be true, in part. I told...

I think she wanted to, planned to. She did love me at first. My young heart bonded to her because she loved me. I tried so hard not to change. I tried so hard it hurt. But I couldn't hold it back for long. Horror at my hideous form killed all her love for me. But her disgust didn’t kill my love for her. I don't remember my life before I came to Mistress. I know I did not come to be when I first looked in her face, but I can remember nothing else of my life. She named me Lyneth on that day. A sore blow struck me later when she saw my ungodly form and hardened her heart against me. I suppose I was fortunate she didn’t kill me or turn me out. But she kept me. Though her rejection tortured me, I preferred it to isolation. She never called me by the name she gave me after that. She only called...

Effective Leadership Practices

...Effective Leadership Practices Project – Leona Helmsley Introduction The leader I selected is Leona Helmsley. The success of the Helmsley name and ultimate development of their family fortune has often been attributed to Helmsley’s leadership and influence. Though her reputation as a highly successful hotelier and real estate mogul precedes her she was also a very complex woman and, frankly, not very well liked. I chose Mrs. Helmsley because her because I was intrigued by her ability to maintain her complexity while continuing to garner success. The Helmsley Definition of Leadership I didn’t find any direct quotes from Mrs. Helmsley about her definition of leadership, but based upon what various reports have stated regarding how she treated her employees I gathered that Mrs. Helmsley ascribed to the Autocratic leadership style. Dr. Don Warrick (1981) from the University of Colorado describes the Autocratic Leader as one who has a, High emphasis on performance and a low emphasis on people. (They) Assume that people are lazy, irresponsible, and untrustworthy and that planning, organizing, controlling, and decision-making should be accomplished by the leader with minimal employee involvement. (They) Rely on authority, control, power, manipulation and hard work to get the job done. (pg. 158) One account given said she was a “nit-picking perfectionist who would throw a fit if an ashtray was missing, or a doorknob wasn’t polished or some item was missing in a bathroom...

Idioms and Expression

...Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thailand, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn common, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscommunication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to assist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used...

...Just another Breakfast The candle-light fluttered upon his face, lighting his sculpted features passionately. His lips were the most perfect shade of rose, matching his faint blush perfectly. Long eyelashes cast shadows across his skin, almost as feminine as a princess’. He looked into my eyes, grazing my face with a tender breath. My own caught in my throat, and I really cannot finish this god damn book With a groan, I crumple up the piece of paper in my hand and toss it to the floor, muttering about deadlines and bards and the Gods know what else. I lean back in my chair, rubbing my temple in frustration; it’s been a month or so since I’ve been hired by the travelling band of entertainers, but my work’s not been up to its usual standards. I hiss, before throwing myself to my feet and walking out of my caravan. I shield my eyes from the blinding sun with a raised hand, looking around the camp. Children run across the fields, tripping each other with sticks before jumping away again. Women sit in circles around barrels of water, nattering about their husbands while washing their family’s clothes. Their dark eyes flicker to me, and they wave good-morning before going back to their daily duties. I reply in kind before turning away, looking at the men of our troupe. Erik stands at the campfire, turning last night’s hunt on the spit. We nod at each other and I approach him, folding my hands into my pockets. “Morning, Erik,” I say. He grunts a reply, his eyes already back...

Review

...Why did I get Married, the Tyler Perry film starring Tasha Smith, Janet Jackson, Sharon Leal, Jill Scott, and Tyler Perry himself is the story about the struggle married couples to remain faithful to one another, while focusing on achieving their goals. Each couple participates in a Mountain retreat that takes place in Colorado Mountains in order to focus on the nature of their marriage, reflect on their love for one another. This provided a break from career, daily routine, to reflect on the state of their marriage, while resolving existing issues, dealing with conflict, while maintaining their love for each other. This movie is a contemporary view of African American lifestyles, culture, and life’s issues. Contemporary viewing in African American media is the direct result of how African Americans have worked hard, to overcome past struggles thus changing culture, ideals, beliefs, creating a new way for future generations. This movie can be seen from a variety of areas, such as education level and socioeconomic class conflict. This can also be seen from the gender perspective, as a rival between female behaviour in a relationship, and male behaviour in a relationship. Class, and education can be further analyzed into the lifestyle that is influenced by it, creating new concerns; hence the marriage problems that differ within education and economic class levels. While numerous other theories; sociological, semiotics, Marxist and others can be employed to analyze this film; I...

...Word Count: 981 Jordan Lindsey English 15.002 Mrs. Wickman Argument Essay Lies, love, lust and betrayal are themes showed throughout the movie The Family that Preys; however Josh Tyler a movie Critic from Cinema Blend.com was not convinced. He thought it was the worst movie made in 2009, and that the only thing that saved it was its great performances by Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates and Academy Award-nominee Alfre Woodard; “[a]nd that warm, gooey glow that seems to follow every Tyler Perry movie.” The Family That Preys is a movie for anyone who likes close families, friendship, drama, and a whole bunch of nonsense. This movie is about a Wealthy Socialite, Charlotte Cartwright (Bates), and her close friend, Alice Pratt (Woodard), a working class woman. Their lives are turned upside down as their adult children's extramarital affairs, unethical business practices and a dark paternity secret threaten to derail family fortunes and unravel the lives of all involved. In the review, John says, “Charlotte seems almost to suffer from a split personality disorder. When she’s with Alice she’s a freewheeling, kind, and generous woman. Whenever we see her without her friend, she’s a horrible rich bitch, ripped straight off the set of Dallas or Falcon Crest.” In the movie, Charlotte is never snobby or two faced. She puts on a hard exterior while working because she is fighting an endless battle with her son, William. He believes she has lost her spunk and is trying to excommunicate...

The real situation in a classroom can never be predicted. Problems may arise any time of the learning and testing process. In this everyday learning process the students together with their teacher learn things together. Not everyone in that room is the same, especially the students. Most of them may be able to cope up with their teacher’s strategy of teaching but some cannot. Not all of them may lend their full attention with regards to listening to every instruction their teacher say. I can say that being in the real situation like being in a classroom as someone else (not a student but an observer) sometimes worries me. Because I may be able to cause the learning interference in that conducive learning environment. At first I may feel to be very conscious about what would I do next, what would I say if someone asked me this thing or that, how would I act for me to be more professional with this study I am conducting and other more uncertainties. But nevertheless my gratitude being there in that room is incomparable with my other first hand experiences in life as an education student. I am very thankful for the opportunity...

...whether it is a comedy, actions, or documentary. Yet, our society gets influence by them in a type of way. Some movies brought a life lesson, and others provide a negative image about something. All movies or shows have a type of message behind it, but people never spends their time to analyze or think about it. Regardless of the type of movies, they always impact or influence someone’s life, or they learn from it. Beyond the scene and acting, there is a scene that contains messages that might caught one attention and make them stare and think for a little while.
