Leslie Gourse was a writer and a biographer who wrote on jazz musicians and singers. Her first book, Louis’ Children: American Jazz Singers, was published in 1984. Her full-length biographies include Unforgettable: The Life and the Mystique of Nat King Cole, Sassy: The Life of Sarah Vaughan, and others. She had also written for children and young adults. In 1991, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers awarded her the Deems Taylor Award for a series of seven articles in the magazine JazzTimes focusing on female jazz musicians.
