RE: Letter of Intent – St. Paul University Joint Honours Program in Theology and Philosophy

Dear St. Paul University Faculty of Theology,

I would like to express my interest in applying for the Joint Honours Program in Theology and Philosophy. For as long as I can remember, I have always had an intimate passion with theology and philosophy. As a young teenager still in high school I recall summer days where I would dedicate time to write about theology and philosophy, simply to organize my thoughts.

From 2008- 2010 I was a counsellor for the al-Azhar program for Isma’ili youth in the Mississauga area. Historically, al-Azhar draws parallels to the university in Cairo, where during the Fatimid Empire there was a revitalization of philosophy and theology in perfect harmony with science and faith. The program offered a weekly class for Isma’ili youth in grades 11 and 12 in which they were able to engage with their Faith in a modern context.

In pre-class development, or lesson planning, our main challenge was to hone in on the key concepts, and articulate them or assist in reinforcing them in a modern context. It goes to say that it was challenging, however at times there were moments of creative genius. I found that my strong working knowledge of theological concepts, and philosophy assisted me in communicating these messages.

I would like to dedicate more time, and indeed perhaps build a career in the study of theology and philosophy. It is practical to dream, but before I can establish a career I must gain more knowledge, and a greater understanding of various theologies and philosophies and in this regard I feel that the Joint Honours Program in Theology and Philosophy at St. Paul University would be well fitted, or if I may perfect – because it will be the first step in tangibly expressing my passion and desire.

After high school, I studied Human Resources Management at Sheridan College. In 2010, during my last semester I fell gravely ill and was diagnosed three months later with Myasthenia Gravis. As a result I was forced to retire from work and school as my condition was such where I was not able to perform regular tasks or duties efficiently. Indeed, it was a trying time. My family was worried as were my friends, and I myself did not know what the final outcome was going to be. Thankfully, I have been placed on medication to suppress the symptoms.
I found that after that period in my life from January 2010 – June 2011 there were vivid moments of clarity. In that, I realized that life was too short and that we must make the very best of every moment, if I may quote His Highness The Aga Khan III “Happiness is never a negative affair; it is to be won by men who are fully alive, full of the joy of living.” I believe that the ‘joy of living’ will be an easier affair if I was to spend it in the acquisition of knowledge relevant to the Good.

I am applying under Mature Student regulations as such you will find enclosed a copy of my resume, all transcripts (sealed with a stamp and signature), and a copy of a letter of recommendation (original will be mailed through post). I have also enclosed a copy of a paper which I wrote in my Philosophy of Religions course at Sheridan College. The assignment required developing a symbol and using it to articulate God. I hope that it will serve to reinforce my passion of the subject matter.

I thank your time in the consideration of my application, and hope that to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

Amin Ladha

I like that the course I want to take has more of a what if circumstances so that when I do graduate and start working I am able to handle problems that I will have to deal with in the real world. I like that faculty and aides are available to me more then other schools that I have looked into so I will have help if I do run into things that I may not be able to figure out or need extra help with. I also love the fact that I can learn on my terms as far as needing things to be visual and/or audio instead of having to read everything and try soak in it. Secondly I feel as though it would benefit my family greatly to have a career and no longer have to live paycheck to paycheck. ...The attributes that one must posses to be a great leader are many. One must have determination. One must be confident. One must know oneself well. A leader understands that to achieve great things one cannot always play it safe. A leader understands that one must take risks. Calculated risks, but risks nonetheless. These are lessons I have learned, not just from books and theory but from my own personal experience as an entrepreneur. Starting a business from scratch (or 3 in my case!) can be a daunting task and can break a lot of people, but something one must never forget is that despite the final outcome there is always something to gain. And while financial rewards are the primary goal for almost every entrepreneur, gains do not always come in such form. Sometimes knowledge and information are your rewards and one must gather them and treasure them and the smart individual will use them to grow into a better, stronger leader. This will allow you to not make the same mistake twice and find the best way to reach your goal. And that is precisely what I have tried to do during my experience as an entrepreneur in order to prepare myself for whatever challenge life has in store for me. Undoubtedly I would love to say that I have been successful in every single one of my business ventures, but this is unfortunately not true. This is why I would like to focus my research effort on the strengths and weaknesses of small businesses when compared to their larger counterparts,...

B specializes in supplying difficult-to-locate plumbing and light fixtures for contractors who do remodeling work. B sent the following letter to five contractors in the Harrisburg region: OFFER TO THE TRADE We have cornered the market for a source of brass "Orient Express" wall hanging light fixtures. We know (and we're sure that you do, too) that these fixtures are in such great demand that they are nearly impossible to obtain. If you are willing to take all your needs from us, we'll guarantee delivery at $20.00 each. I. M. Sap (S hereafter), a contractor who remodeled about twenty houses per year, received one of B's letters. S was interested in the lamps, so when he was near B's place of business, he stopped in and asked B the quantity of lamps available. B replied that he had a large quantity of lamps in his warehouse. On the following day, B sent a messenger to S’s place of business with a letter that provided as follows: Dear S: I can give you ten percent off the quoted price if you will agree right away to my proposal by picking up lamps. What do you say? Do we have a deal? S did not respond. However, on the following day, S was present at the building site of X, another contractor, when a large load of the "Orient Express" brass lamps that X had ordered from B arrived. There at X's job site S saw the lamps for the first time, and realized...

Sample Contracts Problem and Answer

...LAW EXTENSION COMMITTEE WINTER SESSION 2012 CONTRACTS SAMPLE OF AN ANSWER TO A PROBLEM QUESTION QUESTION Alan is a tenant of a home unit owned by Bill. Ten days ago Alan received a letter from Bill in which Bill stated that he (Bill) was ‘interested in selling’ his flat and asking Alan to ‘let him know’ if he (Alan) was willing to buy the home unit for the price of $450,000. Three days later Alan posted a letter to Bill in which he agreed to buy the home unit for the price set out in Bill’s letter. After receiving Alan’s letter, Bill telephoned Alan and told him that he had decided that he did not want sell the home unit. Alan seeks your advice as to whether he has a contract with Bill for the sale of the home unit. ANSWER Introduction For a contract to arise in the circumstances of the question, one of the parties has to make and offer which is duly accepted by the other. If there is an offer followed by an acceptance there will be a contract between the parties. Issue The issue raised by the question is whether Bill’s letter constitutes an offer. If it does, Alan’s reply is an acceptance of the offer, with the consequence that a contract exists between the parties. However, if Bill’s letter is only an invitation to treat, no contract exists between the parties because Alan’s reply will not be the acceptance of an offer. In fact, Alan’s reply would constitute the making of an offer to purchase the unit from Bill, and it is clear that Bill rejected...

...collect her overdue balance, which was $12,272.84. In this action, Citibank attempted to enforce the revised agreement rather than the original agreement. Wilson argued that she never accepted the revised agreement. Is this a good argument? Issue: Did Wilson agree on the revised agreement? Rule: The elements for acceptance were (1) the offeree intended to enter the contract, (2) the offeree accepted on the terms proposed by the offeror, and (3) the offeree communicated his acceptance to the offeror. Application: Citibank first must prove that Wilson’s intention to enter the contract. If the offeree objectively indicates a present intent to contract on the terms of the offer for a contract to result, this element is satisfied. Here, since Wilson applied for Citibank credit card, which could be interpreted as the offeree’s present intent from reasonable person’s point of view. Wilson communicated her acceptance the Citibank by signing. Citibank also must prove that the offeree accepted on the terms proposed by the offeror. Here, Citibank would argue that they Wilson argued that Wilson continued using the credit...
