It is a part of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. Currently, 1 in 150 individuals are diagnosed with autism, which makes it more common than even pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. Autism can occur in all racial, ethnic, and social groups but it is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. It impairs a person’s ability to communicate and relate to others, and is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe. Debates over the cause of autism have been battling for a very long time, yet there is still not an answer. Majority of people blame the disorder on vaccines administrated to children while they are young. Many activists have claimed that autism rates have skyrocketed since many of these vaccines were mandated for children. The two vaccines thought to be the cause of autism are the MMR, measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, and thimersal which contained a mercury preservative up until seven years ago. Chung case, also known as the “pants lawsuit”, was also a well known case in America in 2005 (Lexis-Nexis, 2008). This is a case where an administrative law judge in the District of Columbia had taken a pair of pants to the cleaners for alteration and dry cleaning; and sued the cleaners for $67 million dollars for the loss of his pants. Doctors, physicians and surgeons are willing to put out a big effort if they know that they are dealing with patients who are insured and have the money to go under extensive medical treatment. But imagine life without such luxuries. For example, what happens if a relative requires much needed surgery, but does not have health insurance to cover the procedure? What happens if a lack of medical insurance prevents you or your family from seeing a doctor, which could result in health problems that had not been identified but could have been treated before they became life threatening? These scenarios may seem far-fetched, but these types of situations happen to people who lack health coverage everyday.
