In time, the number of statistics was enlarged and differentiated, and in many cases, it now comprises several hundred data points. These range from the number of incunabula or microforms in the collection, the expenditure on preservation or buildings to the number of issues made, claims and reservations placed or visits made to exhibitions and special events. These statistics are, for the most part, collected nationally, but libraries also tend to collect additional statistics, (e.g. for special tasks and activities like legal deposit right, special collections, or services for special user groups). All those statistical data could be used as steering instruments for library management. To gain insight into the problem, library instruction environments of nineteen high schools were explored. The schools were selected based on whether their graduates did well or poorly on information-skills assignments integrated in a required first-year college course. The librarians in the nineteen schools were asked to characterize their working relationships with teachers, estimate their students’ information-literacy achievement, and provide data on their staffing and budgets. Findings suggest that school librarians are seldom in a position to adequately collaborate with teachers and that their opportunities to help students achieve information literacy are limited. It is estimated that the at-risk audio/video material in the library’s collections – items that exist only in NYPL and for which there is only one copy – will require 10 petabytes of disk space to store in digital format. The amount is staggering, but not unrealistic. This number can grow exponentially if other materials are considered. Given the recent emergence of “big data” storage solutions, such as that provided by Isilon Systems, the technology to grow such large systems for unstructured data is readily available. However, the cost is considerable and great challenges exist in the concepts of vendor lock-in, data validity, bit-rot, and ongoing migrations. This challenge exists not only for libraries and similar institutions vying to keep digital representations online for prosperities sake, it also bleeds into other industries such as health-care, financials, and media. Implementing a commercially available storage system does not guarantee such availability. Having this data in one place for example exposes it to total loss in case of a disaster.
