In the last line of the novel, Death tells Liesel that it is ”haunted” by humans, just like humans are haunted by Death. Although Death witnesses Death daily, he is fearful of- and occasionally awed by- those who live.
I can relate to Liesel’s thoughts when she wrote this. Words can cause any kind of emotion, and I can strive to make words “right” by countering harmful propaganda with writing that comes from love, and the ideals of others.

Rudy is saying to Liesel that her father stood up for what he believed in and so should they. Liesel agrees that feeding others is worth punishment.

Death is giving perspective from the view of a little girl, and how she sees these people who have come to take her brother.

He shows how war takes so much and only requests more, implying Death. He has to come around and pick up all the dead souls.

I think this is an interesting reference sneaked in by the author. Similar to Hitler, Viktor takes his place as leader and commands people, while the others, desiring to be controlled, follows them unaware of the dictatorship that they are following.

While Liesel unleashes her rage on Ilsa Hermann in this passage, she starts imagining her words taking physical blows at her, such as bloody noses and blackened eyes. Liesel begins to realize the potential of words to release pain unto others.

I was surprised at this part of the book. Death reveals some future fates of individual characters throughout the novel, rather than building suspense and releasing it in mystery books. I was taken aback by Death’s sudden description of Rudy Steiner’s death.Marcus Zusak and his interesting form of foreshadowing highlights the events that lead each character to their final fate.
