Defining Moments

...Being a manager is hard. Throughout his book, “Defining Moments”, Joseph L. Badaracco Jr. explains the challenges managers face when making decisions on a daily basis and provides a framework for how to tackle those challenges. Early on, Badaracco explains how decisions between right and right (as opposed to right and wrong) are often the most difficult. Decisions like this can be seen as ‘defining moments’ because, according to Badaracco, they reveal, test, and shape a manager’s personal values as well as those of their organization. They also cause managers to come away with ‘dirty hands’, the unfortunate side effect of choosing one ‘right’ option over the other. It is how Badaracco puts these decisions in perspective that sets this book apart from other ethical decision-making books. ‘Defining Moments’ goes on to introduce a few real world cases that exemplify right versus right dilemmas. These examples demonstrate certain challenges that manager’s face, as well as serve to impress upon the reader the idea that there is almost never a clear-cut solution. The first case is that of Steve Lewis, a black analyst asked to represent his company’s diversity at a special presentation. The issue lies in whether he should sacrifice his personal values to satisfy his company’s request. Lewis’ case reveals how conflicts of personal integrity and moral identity shape one’s ultimate decision. A lot of thought must be given to choices that involve a matter of personal values in terms of...

Life Changing Event

...Life Changing Event Jonathan McCullough English Composition 1 Tina Miller February 3rd 2014 Life before my daughter’s birth was excellent, or so I thought. I was entirely wrapped up in my desires and myself. I was the definition of selfish, but somehow my wonderful wife put up with me through those years. The worst part of it was I didn’t even realize it. The funny thing about having children is that they give you a deep understanding of selflessness. Even when we found out that my wife was pregnant, I still carried on pretty much the same way I always had. I had no idea that my world was going to come crashing down around me. Through all of the dust and rubble of the remainder of what I thought was my great life, a brilliant light began to shine through. The light was the love that I felt for my daughter, once you have experienced that depth of love, your life will never be the same. The birth of my daughter was one of the most positively impactful events of my life. The day she was born will be etched into my memory forever. After a scheduled doctor visit we were sent straight to the hospital to begin the journey. I remember the excitement that was almost tangible as we drove to the hospital. After checking in they put us in a small examination room on the labor and delivery floor. We were to spend a long and uncomfortable night. My wife was uncomfortable for obvious reasons, me on the other hand, I had pushed to hospital chairs together to form a makeshift bed for...

Life Experiences

...Life Is Like a Box of Chocolates. In everyone’s life, people go through steps, obstacles, and challenges that shape them into the individuals they are. Common obstacles in everyone’s life are their adolescent years. As everyone can attest, the adolescent years may be the most fun but also the hardest, most emotional, and most rough times in everyone’s life. To become individuals, we all have to go through our own journey, which includes the letdowns and miracles because it is what builds us to be the person we grow up to be. Some people may waste life, some may rush through it, but the ones who cherish every moment and live every minute as it was their last, get the richest experience life has to offer. Life is a mystery, and you never know what is going to be handed to you. Just like when Tom Hanks said, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get". To get life’s richer experiences, take risks, have fun, and take on critical decisions instead of being afraid of them. In my life, there have been several people who have made the most impact in my life, and my number one fan, although our relationship has been up and down is my mother. My mother has never pushed me aside, and has always kept me under her angelic wings like the precious son I am to her. I have disappointed her time after time, but she has never given up on me. Although there have been times where she said she’s one incident shy, but I know my mother’s strength, and she’ll never...

Godfather

...Is normal in these days that we, humans, can have or experiment with happy, hard, sad moments and also feelings that we need to deal with our best attitude and maturity. At the moment when all this things and emotions happen, many people prefer to take their time to breath and calm their selves, sometimes they prefer to eat junk food until they feel good or just go outside to smoke a cigarette, and more things that they do depending of the age of the person, but the point is that, all of us do something to feel better. Is interesting that people have their own favorite place or environment, where they can express their feelings, communicate with their own soul or just feel safe.   As I said above, all we have our hard moments in life; we are humans and we have feelings and emotions. With this essay, I wanted to express something to you that happened to me yesterday, and I didn´t know about it.   Yesterday, I was so happy because my mom said that she was going to prepare lasagna, my favorite food. I went to the university very excited, wetting to lunchtime, so I can eat a big piece of melted cheese that comes from the juicy lasagna. When I finished my classes I didn’t care to say bye to my friends, I just ordered a taxi to go home fast and eat it. When I arrived, my mom said that she had a problem; she burned the lasagna. I looked at her eyes very angry; I was passing for all my bad moments because I was really hungry, and the first thing that I saw was a black burned lasagna...

The Kite Runner

...I think the main point that Hosseini was trying to demonstrate was that in everyone’s life there is a turning point. Some event happens and that event has the power to change you into a whole new person, and depending on the type of person you are can change the outcome of what happens to you for the rest of your life. For example, if you are a quiet and fragile person like Amir and you witness your best friend being raped as punishment for standing up for a belief in loyalty, it is likely that such an event would change you, perhaps even traumatize you. A catastrophic event such as that can change you in more ways than are even imaginable. Amir, a timid boy with no inner armor holding him down, now had become scared and angry and he never forgave himself for that one life changing event. Hassan, too, has unfortunate events happen to him and like Amir, Hassan is never quite the same after these events. First, Hassan was born to Ali instead of his proper father so he was set to live the poor life of a Hazara, trapped as a servant to Amir and Amir’s father. Hassan’s loyalty to Amir, as a servant and best friend, was tested when Asef, the school bully, cornered the two boys. Amir and Hassan escaped with Hassan’s skill with a slingshot, and the embarrassed Asef swore to get back at Hassan. Asef saw his chance one day when Hassan went kite running for Amir’s championship winning kite. Hassan, cornered by Asef, refused to give the kite to Hassan and his gang, acting out of loyalty...

Happiness

...you need to be able to understand that everything is good within your own life and that you are able to be happy with the people that are in your life and the people that influence how you live your daily life. Happiness is all of the good that someone experiences combined into one emotion. This emotion can, and usually does, bring out the best in people. For someone to be happy they need to know that everything that has happened in their past has happened for a reason and that it has happened in order for them to become a better person. Not only does it make them a better person but it also makes them realize how good they have it or can possibly have it. Although things might be hard to deal with at the moment, people need to realize that they will be able to learn from their experiences and that they will learn to take the good from them all. In the end, the hard times will help people strive for happiness. Happiness isn't free. You have to earn it and work to keep it. The price for happiness is having to suffer and having to question events that occur during one's life. People need to be able to adapt to their surroundings so that they can get the best out of them. You can't live your life in fear of what can go wrong. You just need to go out and live your life to the fullest and know that you'll be happy, even if something doesn't go the way that you had planned it to. The best kind of happiness is when you know that you are able to care for someone...

Life In Jamaica

...I was safe traveling alone. I long for the moments I spent running into my dad’s arms every time I saw him. I long for all the happy careless moments as a child, especially the ones spent in Jamaica. I spent my first 9 ½ years in Jamaica. I believe I was living the good life quite frankly. My mom tried to ensure I would be able to get the best out of life in Jamaica; her logic was, I want you to be able to do everything you get invited to as you grow up. To accomplish that, she ensured I was busy everyday after school doing some type of afterschool activity. The activities were swimming lessons, tennis lessons, modern dance, tap dance, and voice training. I was one busy child, but it was fun, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed spending time with my friends; I enjoyed racing to finish our homework so we can get down to the fun stuff. And of course I enjoyed all the birthday pool parties I got invited to especially since I knew how to swim. But the greatest perk to knowing how to swim was when I went to my grandma’s house in...

Watershed

...Running Head: MY WATERSHED MOMENT 1 My Watershed Moment In partial fulfillment of the requirements of OLCU 615: Organization Development and Change July 21, 2013 MY WATERSHED MOMENT 2 My Watershed Moment There are many memories that have happened in my life that are important to me. It is very hard to select one that has really changed or impacted my life as an individual. Considering I am just about half way through my illustrious life building a bank of historical memories that I would like to recall and some that I would like to erase for good. As I look back, I think the one event that really turned my life around was joining the Navy, 20 years later and I must say it was a decision well made. As I graduated high school my thought process was to be the first person in my family to go to college. Here I am an 18 year old boy from Queens, New York having to travel more than an hour to college, taking two buses and a train. Now this does not sit well with someone when it is in the middle of winter and you feel like the city is just eating you up. It was at that point where I figured college life was not for me. Transitioning from a place where I knew plenty of people to an environment that was completely made of strangers also contributed to my decision on leaving college. Now here I am attending college, it feels like things have come full circle; I am now laying the foundation for my children setting the example that I did not...

Grace In Flannery O Connor's Short Stories

...Flannery O’Conner’s short stories are all characterized by a moment of grace. Many of these moments of grace occur due to a significant, life-altering event. Her main characters are portrayed as flawed and their moments of grace are often the result of some kind of violent or sinister incident. Julian from “Everything that Rises Must Converge” and Hulga from “Good Country People” are two of these imperfect characters that experience a moment of grace. These characters are alike in their vain personalities, which cause their comparable downfalls. Their similarities convey the message O’Conner plants in her short stories. This message says that if one thinks that only they know best or that they are superior to others, they will learn the hard way that this is just not the case. The most obvious similarity between Julian and Hulga is that they think they’re superior. Julian often retreats into a mental bubble when he doesn’t want to be a part of what was going on around him. He does this to judge the others around him from the safety of his mind. “He could see out and judge but in it...

Change

...not merely necessary to life - it is life.” Changes and adaptation is the vital part of everyone’s' life and one should always be ready to accept the coming in the way. Being open to changes is a great benefit as sometimes "What You Wants Turns Out to be Not What You Wanted". In such cases in spite of having complaining attitude lets welcome the new changes in life. Don't regret from past. Learn from it and become more vigilant in making a choice in future. In this Agile world, most people have fear from change, not in the sense that change is negative, but because it is unknown. Therefore, the comfort zones that have been established will no longer be applicable. In personal or professional life try to be the best version of yourself. For example people you thought were going to be there forever aren't there anymore. It does not means that people change. It’s just that there role changes according to time or situation. As quoted by Mahatma Buddha “ Everything changes, nothing remains without change”. Life is just like weather sometimes too bad to resist and sometimes pleasant to enjoy. If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we are not really living. Don't be afraid of changes, you may lose something good but probably end up gaining something much better. It is true. The only constant in life is change. From the day that we are born we em-barque on the journey of endless change, better known as the journey of life. Our lives are one big...

Life

...to give a presentation on megaliving- how to lead a perfect life. Let’s make this an interactive session. So, hers a question I invite you to consider on. How many of you out here think that you are leading a perfect life? Or before this can any one of you describe what a perfect life is? Before answering this question, let’s do an exercise, Everyone shut your eyes, take two deep breaths and picture this scene taking place many years into the future: you are in an elegant dining hall, surrounded by those closest to you (who are dressed beautifully, looking their best). The candles shimmer on every table and the importance of the evening wafts through the air like the aromas from the kitchen. This is your testimonial dinner, an opportunity for the people who know you best to speak about you as a person, your achievements and your contributions to those you love and to society in general. Just for a moment, reflect on what you would like them to say. This reflection my friends; is the perfect life you want for yourself. And how many of us are actually living our perfect life..? There are two competing schools of thought. One says go out there live your dream, be the best, play at your highest potential. And the other says that the purpose of life is to simply enjoy the journey, simply be happy, and live in the moment. When you think about these two schools, you realize that both are equally important, life is all about the balance. It’s important to reach for the mountain...

Life

...a decision. Just think it through and make sure it is really the best thing for you too. Friends don’t always keep in mind what is best for you. Sometimes they don’t realize how it can affect you and they don’t even do this on purpose. It just comes as a natural habit. I can even admit seeing myself doing it sometimes. They just don’t know what is best for you. That should only be for you to know. Often this picture will fade when having fun, but make sure you always have it at reach in the back of your head. You never know when something could go wrong and ruin your life and opportunities. It is very important to always think of your future and what you want to do later in life. If you have always dreamed to go to UVA and become a lawyer don’t go out and under-age drink at a party and then go driving. None of this makes sense. You think now that you would never do anything like that, but in the moment you never know. Lots of people get caught in the moment and make a mistake thinking that most people get away with it. But if you go out there and drive drunk and kill a perfectly responsible person who has good judgment and makes good decisions you will be forced to live with that for the rest of your life. You will have to face their family face to face and tell them that YOU are the reason they lost who they lost. You also have to say how it was because of a bad decision. You just got caught up in the moment and wound up killing someone perfectly innocent. It goes from talking...
