2.5 Review of Related Research Findings
2.5.1 Gender and Job Satisfaction Fatima et al. (2012) identified that gender differences has directly affected the job satisfaction. This finding is in contrast with Oshagbemi (2000) indicated that gender does not affect directly on the job satisfaction. Hence, gender will be used as demographic characteristics for measuring the level of job satisfaction with work-life balance in this research. Noordin and Jusoff (2009) found that gender is not a function towards overall job satisfaction and there were no significant differences between men and women academics. However, Malik (2011) argued that demographic variables were slightly related to overall job satisfaction of university faculty member. In …show more content…
According to Julien et al. (2011), flex-time (Hill et al., 2010) and compressed work-week (Julien et al., 2011) helps to reduce work-life conflict and enhance work-life balance as well. According to Shujat et al. (2011), the study found that long working hours have negative and weak relationship with job satisfaction. Then, employer could improve employee’s job satisfaction by reducing working on hours. In additions, work schedule flexibility has greater influence on job satisfaction of employees that flexibility in work schedule increases, the job satisfaction level will increase as well (Malik et al., …show more content…
Kumarasamy et al. (2015) stated that work overload is one of the important factors that influenced work-life balance. Awang and Ahmad (2010) conducted a study towards academic staff in UiTM Kelantan, revealed that there was lack of significant relation between workload and job satisfaction. Besides that, Porter and Umbach (2000) pointed out that given too much work in a target timeline will result in employees becoming stressed out from their work as well as their organization. There will be high quality of teaching in universities if a lecturer is capable to perform a given workload. A research conducted by Shahzad et al. (2010) to test the mediating effect of job satisfaction on the relationship of compensation and workload with academic quality in the public educational institutions in Pakistan. The results showed that there is positive impact of faculty compensation whereas negative impact of faculty workload on the faculty satisfaction. This study is supported by Malik et al. Therefore, the current study attempts to explore the relationship between work motivation and job satisfaction. Based on the literature review two hypotheses were formulated 1) There will be positive relationship between work motivation and job satisfaction, and 2) There would be a gender difference on the variable of work motivation and job satisfaction. To asses job satisfaction, “Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS; Spector, 1997)”, and for motivation, “Motivation at Work Scale (MAWS, Gagné, M., et.al, 2010)”, were used. The sample of the study consists of 80 middle managers (46 males; 34 females) from different banks of Karachi, Pakistan. A Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was calculated for the correlation between the work motivation and job satisfaction. In order to find out gender differences t test was computed. In conclusion, the findings of the study suggest that there was a positive correlation between work motivation and job satisfaction. Purpose - This study examines the relationship between motivator and hygiene factors of the two-factor theory and job satisfaction of Gen-Y. Design/ Methodology/ Approach - Totally 128 full time Gen-Y employees of the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic officers completed a questionnaire measuring their motivator and hygiene factors and job satisfaction. The motivators were measured by work values questionnaire (WVQ) with 25 items, and job satisfaction was measured with a 15-item questionnaire adapted from Warr et al., (1979). The scales for all questions were seven point Likert scales. Factor analysis, T-Test, regression, and One-way ANOVA were applied in the data analysis. Findings - The results revealed that employees’ motivators are related significantly to their intrinsic job satisfaction. However, employees’ hygiene factors are not significantly related to extrinsic job satisfaction. This result is inconsistent with the previous study of Furnham A. and Eracleous A. (2009) and supports Locke’s (1976) criticism of Herzberg’s theory.
