LITTERING

The problem of littering in our cities and towns is getting worse. Litter consists of waste product such as containers, papers, wrappers which have been disposed of without consent. Litter can also be used as a verb. To litter means to throw (often man-made) objects onto the ground and leave them unremoved, as opposed to disposing of them properly. It is a human impact on the environment and is a serious environmental issue in many countries. Litter can exist in the environment for long periods of time before degrading and be transported large distances into the world's oceans. Litter can affect quality of life. Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world. The cellulose acetate butts are not biodegradable and, as a result, their chemical decomposition can take many decades.
Litter is “carelessly discarded refuse ,” most commonly found on the ground. It can be hazardous, like shards of broken glass, or non-hazardous, like a piece of hair. Because some trash items seem harmless, there is controversy about what should technically be called “litter.” Common types of litter is the amount of trash littered each year is getting closer every year to the amount of trash that was actually properly disposed of and billions of dollars have been spent cleaning it up and remedying the environmental problems caused by litter. The most common type of litter is cigarette butts, carelessly flicked onto the ground by smokers. What the people guilty of these crimes do not realize is that these butts take about five years break down, thus the result of just one thoughtless action can be apparent for years to come. The largest volume of a single category of littered item is beverage containers. This can be attributed to the fact that our world is steadily becoming all about convenience at all costs. Littering

...Littering Fatima Ahsan The topic of littering has been discussed for many years. Everyday people see littering either occurring or doing it themselves. People see it on highways, parks, and even their own lawns. Littering is also found all over the world, even the cleanest countries. People should not litter. One reason is that it can harm the environment. This is because the chemicals can seep into the soil. For example, when oil is dumped, then it affects the plant life. Critics argue that it doesn’t harm the environment, but they are wrong because dumped oil really does affect plant life. That it can harm the environment is one reason, but there are many more. Another reason is that it can deplete the aesthetic value of property. This is because trash makes property look less appealing. For example, when trash covers a state park, then less people would want to go there. Critics argue that littering does not deplete the aesthetic value of property, but they are wrong because littering does make a property look less appealing. That littering can deplete the aesthetic value of property is another reason, but there are still many more. A final reason is that it can cost people money. This is because sanitation workers work for the government which pays them with our tax money. For example, when the highway is covered with trash, sanitation workers are called to clean it up. Then they are paid with our tax money. Another example is that when...

What Is Littering Wrong

...The renovation of o Our beautiful school campus has been defaced by many disrespectful students who continue to litter on our campus. The principal’s way of dealing with this problem is to take away our after school activity. I do agree that there is a big littering issue because littering, affects this world in so many different ways, it is just flat out wrong; I also agree that something needs to be done and a punishment given that is current with littering issue on campus and imposed on those students where the punishment is needed , just not with this new decision. How Does Littering Affect Marine Wildlife?

...How does littering affect marine wildlife? Littering has become a much bigger problem in the world than it used to be. It has begun to even affect the wildlife around us all, especially marine wildlife. The litter has been getting into the water from many different ways, it can be flushed down the toilet, left on the road and washed into drains and waterways when it rains, and the most common way would be dropped directly into the water by boaters. Plastics have the most affects on the marine wildlife and the plastic makes up over 60% of marine debris. Plastics are also the longest lasting. A plastic bag will last 200 to 400 years, where a plastic bottle takes about 450 years to fully break down. These plastics are not only outliving the marine wildlife but it is also killing them. In August of 2000 there was a whale found washed up on the shore near Cairns, Australia. When they did an autopsy on the whale to find out why it had washed up onto the shore they found its stomach was tightly packed with different kinds of plastics. Almost 200 square feet of plastic supermarket bags, food packages, bottles, and more was the cause of that whale’s death. Marine animals mistake plastic for food and they eat it, most do not have issues when it comes to eating it, but digesting it is the problem. Food needs to break down before it can be fully digested and these plastics will not break down causing it to fill up more and more until the creature dies. Turtles are one of the more common...

Toxic Wasteland

...bags, and McDonald’s® wrappers are dispersed throughout the environment. Trash is tucked away deep into the crevices of cities, forests, fields, and oceans. Littering affects not only the view of the beautiful environment, but it also affects animals, water systems, and plant life. The consequences of littering diminish the quality of life for all organisms in the ecosystem, and it must be stopped. Humans tend to be wasteful by nature. Almost everyone has left garbage outside, or thrown something out the window. Believe it or not, biodegradable substances such as orange peels, apple cores, and banana peels are all considered littering. While littering seems commonplace, it is disrespectful to the environment. Animals are injured, water sources are contaminated, and toxins are continually recycled into the ecosystem. State governments have been hard at work trying to find measures to decrease the amount of waste being thrown into our world. The real question is why do people continue to litter? The Scottish government provides people answers about the common issue of littering. According to the Scottish Falkirk Council, people have come up with many excuses to explain why littering is acceptable for humans. Based on data collected and surveys, various reasons to continue practicing this habit are, “Littering keeps someone in a job, there aren’t enough garbage bins, and one person can’t make a difference” (Litter Facts). When considering human’s opinions, these reasons...

Why Do People Litter?

...Why do people litter? There are many reasons given as to why this might be. They have all sorts of excuses for littering. They can’t be bothered or are too lazy to find a bin and have no sense of pride in their community. And the worst reason they came out with this statement everybody does it! How many of these reasons or excuses have you heard? Litter is everyone’s problem, and there is never an excuse! According to Longman Dictionary, the word detrimental is causing harm or damage and littering can be defined as the waste of paper, cans, bottles, garbage and even chemicals so as to people have thrown away and left on the ground in a public place. The broadly accepted description of litter is ‘waste in the wrong place caused by human agency’. So who does the littering? Ignorant, lazy, immature, cowards are the list of people who do it in my opinion. Based to a litter statistics I have read in the net stated that most of littering occurs in transport sites, smoking areas and market sites. Chewing gum is a very constant form of litter as it sticks to the footpaths and roads and is very hard, and expensive, to remove it. And the most shocking statement is that men are tend to litter more than women and women usually use bins more than men. Even, our school children are more likely to be the culprit of littering than other people. In my point of view littering is becoming a habit among Malaysian. It has flattering an eye sore to the community and society. Far too often when we...

The Lorax Research Paper

...In the movie, The Lorax, it demonstrates that little acts such as littering can affect the environment significantly. Although Santa Clara County has not been exposed to the extent of harm viewed in The Lorax, it is still possible to make the environment reach that level of harm. Three issues for pollution are littering, chopping down trees, and destroying natural habitats. One issue that still occurs in the county is littering. People will tend to be lazy and just toss their trash on the street rather than simply throwing it in the trash can. This problem can result in Earth being a polluted environment. Dumping waste into the ocean can be hazardous to animals and creatures that live in the sea. With trash in the ocean, there will most likely be a decrease in the sea animal population due to the animals suffocating from plastic bags or mistake litter as food, which will end up being difficult for them to ingest and they will become ill or die. Another risk from littering is polluting water. Littering has the ability to pollute our clean, drinking water and makes the water...

The Hawthorne Effect

...observed that no matter what circumstantial changes were made, the productivity of the workers increased. This observation was hypothesized as workers performance increased due to an increase of individual attention. In today’s research, the Hawthorne effect is a form of reactivity where individuals alter their behavior to highlight improved aspects of their characteristics during observation. | Example of Hawthorne Effect | A good example of this effect can be seen when a researcher is carrying out a study on littering behavior of people. If the researcher lets people know that he is studying their littering habits, he might not get the true data intended. The participants under study will not litter around as they are used to when they know they are being observed. They will take the litter to the litter bins and throw away litter secretly. However, after the researcher has left and they are sure they are not being observed, they will revert to their usual littering habit. The Hawthorne effect holds that people change their habit temporarily when being observed. | Why is it important for researchers to know about this? | It is important for researchers to know about the Hawthorne Effect because it can produce results that are tainted and inaccurate. If researchers conduct a study and they are unaware of The Hawthorne Effect, they may conduct a study in which they observe the participants while they’re taking a survey or completing a task, not knowing that their presence is...
