Loose Change

Maybe you’re not in the habit of making friends of strangers. Maybe you are. There are many types of people even in a single society and you might not discover how many strange individuals that are walking around – maybe looking up to a person like you.

Loose Change is a short story written by Andrea Levy. A middle-aged woman is the first person narrator in the story. She is a Londoner, and she has a clear image of a Londoner’s way of being. They are all the same to her. She indirectly tells about how she is being prejudiced against all Londoners; when she asks if anyone has change in the lavatory, the following sentence is: "Everyone seemed to leave the place at once – all of them Londoners I was sure of it" (p. 1, l. 10). This shows she is indirectly labelling Londoners for being miserly and for being indifferent when somebody needs a little help. All she needed were some coins for the tampon machine in that her period was two days earlier than expected. Only a single person remains behind in the lavatory – and of course she is not a Londoner. Her name is Laylor and she comes from Uzbekistan, which is a country in Central Asia. The first person narrator does not know that: "Was that the Balkans? I wasn’t sure. “Where is that?” " (p.2, l. 58). The first time Laylor talked, she thought she might be from Spain because of her accent. The first person narrator does not seem to know of anything besides Londoners and the situation in London proper. Elsewhere does not appear to have any sort of interest to her. It is like she is living in her own bubble called London. But again, the lasting woman in the lavatory is called Laylor. She had change – too much, according to the first person narrator: "I didn’t want a bag full of the stuff myself " (p. 1, ll. 19-20), "Only I don’t want all those coins" (p. 1, l. 28). It is as if she is used to bear large notes in her purse, not caring for small things like coins, which makes her appear to be kind of snobbish. Laylor has a reason to carry all these coins in her pocket: "She and her brother had to leave their country, Uzbekistan, when their parents, who were journalists, were arrested. It was arranged very quickly […] This country was just a safe place." (p. 3, ll. 83-87). For that reason, Laylor and her brother are sleeping out in the cold, in the shelter of a square in London, covered in blankets. That is probably why Laylor looks the way she does: "dirt under each of her chipped fingernails, the collar of her blouse crumpled and unironed, a tiny cut on her cheek, a fringe that looked to have been cut with blunt nail-clippers." (p. 2, ll. 71-73). The first person narrator only begins to notice these things after Laylor’s brother came to their table (they were drinking tea together) and began to talk with Laylor in Uzbek. Her brother wants to know where they are going to sleep tonight, and then he asks for money. The first person narrator gets very uncomfortable sitting at the table with at person "like that": "I found a tissue and used it to wipe my sweating palms." (p. 2, ll. 73-74). She is suddenly highly embarrassed by the whole situation, and she considers leaving in spite of Laylor’s politeness. But; there was something about this girl that fascinated her: "I resolved to help her." (p.4, ll.124-125). She probably feels sorry for her, guessing that this girl is "[…] no more than eighteen. A student perhaps." (p. 2, l. 55). She mentions in the text, that only she knows what a menacing place Laylor’s world had become. That leads back to a period of her grandmother’s life where benevolence was what kept her alive. That would be when she was woken by a stranger offering her a warm bed for the night instead of letting her sleep in a doorway. Now the first person narrator has a chance to be the Good Samaritan as well. But that is not the upshot. The setting of the story is in the National Portrait Gallery in London. The only reason the first person narrator went into the Gallery was to get out of the cold. Laylor, on the other hand, was actually walking around looking at pictures. As they are sitting at the table, Laylor leans toward the first person narrator, saying: "I like art" (p. 2, l. 54). The first person narrator is not into art at all, saying things like: "Was it […] the fact that she liked the dreadful painting that caused my mouth to gape? " (p. 1, ll. 34-36). The two women (the middle-aged first person narrator and the young girl Laylor) are very different from each other. There is a striking contrast between them and classifications like high/low status, taking life for granted/valuing life and being careless about money/appreciating the value of even a single coin can easily be mentioned. Regarding to the upshot of the story it can be unveiled that the first person narrator leaves Laylor at the National Portrait Gallery, pushing herself into the cold. Before she decided to leave, she had actually thought of all the negative things about the situation: "Why pick on a single mother with a young son? We haven’t got the time." (p.3, ll. 95-96), "I didn’t know anything about people in her situation. Didn’t they have to go somewhere? […] My life was hard enough without this stranger tramping through it." (p. 3, ll. 100-102) "How would I ever get rid of her? " (p. 3, ll. 106-107). The reason that the end appears so unexpected is because the first person narrator gave us the impression that she really wanted to help Laylor: "All Laylor’s grandchildren would know my name." (p. 4, l. 133). The one thing that made her change her mind again, was that Laylor’s nose was running with snot, and therefore used her arm to drag it across her face – she didn’t know better. The first person narrator says: "I’ll get you something to wipe your nose" (p. 4, l. 136), walked to the counter to get a napkin. She picked up four, stood up straight and walked on to the exit…

Loose Change

...Loose Change The short story is a about a woman who lives in London or a ”Londoner” as she calls it. One day her period comes early as she is walking into the National Portrait Gallery to get warm. She doesn’t have any change for the tampon machine so she asks in the bathroom if anyone has got some change she could borrow. One girl responds. The girl and her brother fled from Uzbekistan, she is now homeless and all of her money can be kept in one pocket. The woman decides to take her out for a cup of tea out of gratefulness for the change she borrowed from her. The girl tells the woman about why she is now in England and how she and her brother are now sleeping on the streets of London every night. At one point the girl starts crying. The woman leaves to get her some napkins, but as she has the napkins in her hand she turns around and leaves the café. The story is written in first-person narration and has a linear structure. The story is reaching towards many well discussed topics such as immigration. In the story we follow a classic “Londoner” who keeps to herself and minds her own business. You can say that she is a very reserved personality (pg. 1 line 1-3). The conflict appears when she “befriends” a refugee from Uzbekistan. The girl is different, and she looks different as well. The woman wants to help her but for some reason something is stopping her. She seems to think that she, as a single mother, she has enough problems already. The woman seems very insecure especially...

...California, until four Muslim Hijackers took control of the plane and were headed toward Washington D.C (Avery). The passengers were frightened for their lives and several were able to make phone calls to their families to say their last goodbyes before the crash. When the passengers were aware of the danger around them they made an attempt to regain control of the plane which caused the crash. After the crash there were little remains of the plane or its passengers, except for a few debris pieces scattered about the area. The crash did manage to leave a crater in the ground that was about 20-15 ft long and about 10ft. wide (Avery). It will always be remembered as a tragic day, one that many are still unclear of. Watching the Loose Change Documentary about 9/11 reveled some very striking information. Their theory is that everything that happened that day including the crashing of Flight 93 was a part of a government conspiracy. They feel the government had knowledge of the attacks prior to their happenings and everything that followed was a complete cover up of the government’s doings. First, The Documentary goes into discussing the crash site after the plane crashed. Being that the plane was a Boeing 757 the crater that it left behind was said to be too small. A witness described the hole to be about 20-15 ft. long, and about 10 ft. wide. They also don’t believe that a big commercial airline and all...

Nine Days

...9 Days – A Jamaican Country Mystery – Dr. Conrad Dyer 9 Days – A Jamaican Country Mystery, a young boy talks about his family and those surrounding him. Spoken in first narrative provides the reader to place themselves in the shoes of the characters. The story sets in a small town in Jamaica, where a body was brought ashore after the Hurricane Charlie. In 1951, Hurricane Charlie killed more than 150 people in Jamaica. However in this case, that didn’t happen, “a murderer was on the loose” Hurricane Charlie was not affiliated with this death. Someone killed this woman, and that person was in the small rural town of Jamaica, where everyone is a suspect. The woman was in a water tank, where she drowned before washed ashore. The narrator in this case is the one who evaluates each individual to the woman. In the first chapter, before the hurricane, the narrator’s dog has become motionless and stops barking, this signifies death of someone and the dog senses this. A gathering occurred to calm the villagers, but everyone was pointing at the other, and claiming that the dog is just hungry. Many accusations lead to J.B., a strong man who is usually compared with Samson. His conduct is usually scary, for people make rumors about him, even though most of it is not true, however they still live off the fact that he has done those things. After J.B. left the narrator found a beautiful pocket knife, this belongs to J.B., and the young child felt as if it’s a perfect gift for him. Young...

The Writing of Me

...Perfect? Not for long. - Commentary by Kerri McDonald The genre of my story is romance; however it changes slightly nearer to the end of my story into a horror. I’d liked to have read this book because I like reading about romance and horror separately, so the two ideas together would be interesting for me. I think that people in high school and college from the age of 13-20 would mostly like this story, particularly for female readers as they like romance more than male do. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re married, single or engaged, this story can entertain the reader and make them want to read on. I have written my story in first person narrative (in the past tense), as it’s easier to portray the senses, thoughts and feelings of the protagonist. My story is told from the perspective of an inside viewer, Katie. My inspiration to write my story was Debora Hill and John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’. Michael, the murderer, kills people and in the end he gets away while the main character that he was trying to kill, Laurie, was still living. I have chosen to name my killer Malcolm because it sounds similar to Michael. At the end of my story he gets away after killing Lewis Jones, which is very similar to Debora Hill’s story, as Michael just disappeared after the reader thinking that he’s dead from falling out of a window. Laurie lived and so did my character, Katie. Michael reappears again and again throughout the story, but he is ignored. This technique...

The Stones Cry Out Themes Essay

...The Stones Cry Out: Analytical Essay In Hikaru Okuizumi's book, "The Stones Cry Out", we follow a man named Manase through his life after the war. Although this seems like just a look on a mans life, there are many themes that tie us in. Hikaru uses many literary elements to develop those themes. Four of those elements are complication, false assumptions, flashbacks, and foreshadowing. Although there are many key themes, the two I noticed the most were the psychological effects of war and family complications due to the loss of a loved-one. Complications are defined as obstacles that increase tension. In the beginning of the book, the complications would be when Manase is faced with his memories of the time he was in the cave with the captain during the war, "He did not want to remember-Manase understood that very well. Even though he could taste his fear, he needed only to remind himself that he was lying on a soft mattress, not a cold bed of rocks."(28) The effects the war had on him were so immense that every night he would have nightmares of it. As this quote states, he didn't want to remember it. He would imagine those times in the war and the dreams seemed as real to him as the day they happened, that's why he needs to constantly remind himself that the war is over. When something is believed to be true; however is not true. An assumption isn't what's said, it is what is behind the words. This is the definition of false assumptions. Though Hikaru Okuizumi...

Wilco

...Wilco’s band recorded their record Yankee for Hotel Foxtrot in unique ways. One thing that stands out the most is the fact that the band produced, engineered and completely put the record together on their own. They considered the record to be an experiment and spent a lot of time changing things up with the music until they got their desired results. After waking the movie “I am Trying to Break Your Heart”,if I were to be the band manager, I would maybe consider handling some things in a different way. When it comes to the record label and the changing relationship, I would advice the band to stay true to themselves. The record label wanted the band to change the record and I would have to agree with the band when they said no. It is their record and they are the artists, why should they change something that is a reflection of who they are? I think it was fine for the band to pull away from the record label because as a result, they ended up with more freedom to release the album the way they wanted to. The record label basically paid for the band to make the record, then turned around and gave it right back to the band which in my opinion was not smart on their part. As far as the conflicts between Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett, I do not know if there was much to be done that could have helped the situation. The conflicts that they had would have more than likely ended up causing problems at some point in time. Jay and Jeff both had ideas that they wanted and both were not...

The Tell Tale Heart Film to Literature

...When asked, most people would say the book is better than the movie but film brings a clearer image to a story. The Tell Tale Heart is a story about a man who claims he has a disease but implies that because it has not dulled his senses, he cannot be called mad. He also points out his mental disorder actually caused his senses to become more acute. When he claims that he has heard things from heaven and hell, it gives away that his super human sensory is an illusion. He seems insane, he talks about an old man who he loves, but he can’t stand his eye or his heart beat. Before the end of the story he kills the old man. In the film there are characteristics that add to this story. The visualization, since you don’t have to imagine it, gives a greater impact. Film has the ability to add a lot of emphasis that make certain scenes stick out from the rest. This grabs attention. Some elements in film can’t be put into literature, an obvious one is actual sound. There are many different similarities in film and literature adaptions, but film brings unique qualities to a story that literature cannot. Film adaptation provides a physical visual for the events in the story. The film begins with a scene of the killer standing in a dark room while in a straightjacket. It's an erie start for the film. The killer is breathing heavily and opens his eyes slowly. This scene gives evidence that he is mad mentally and emotionally. This also makes it seem like the killer has objective. The killer...

...Continental White Cap was had a long history of traditional management and close control by White's Cap founding family. However in changing market environment the headquarters recognized he need for change in order to stay competitive.
The decision to place Peter Browning in Vice Presidents and operating officer position was part of the change strategy as he has proven himself as successful manager. Peters new assignment was to push the exciting successful business division towards leaner, more efficient, and more flexible operation capable of responding to changing market condition.
Browning has recognized the dilemma that he had to face. His boss said "White Cap needed changes, but don't brake it while you are trying to fix it. Continental cant afford to loose White Cap". There was a very strong corporate culture in place backed up by impressive business results over the last 50 years and clear need for change. Employees have developed loyalty to company under family style management culture characterized by long-standing traditions of job security and liberal benefits. Change of existing traditions would not be welcomed.
From the other side market conditions required a quick response and change. Shipments of plastic bottles for food has gone up from 260mln in 1978 to 900mln in 1984. Clearly ignoring this market trend would be destructive for business. Price competition began and customers started to take Total System for granted. What was a competitive...

How to Change Oil in a Car.

...HOW TO CHANGE OIL IN A CAR Definition * Friction – This is the resistance an object encounters when its surface is moving over the surface of another object. It generates wear and heat. * Oil filter – this is a device that filters oil to remove contaminants in an engines oil system. Introduction Vehicles are very important in our lives. They ferry us from place to place and they also carry goods for us. But like any other machine they require maintenance, this includes checking and fixing several parts from time to time. Another very important routine maintenance in a car is changing oil. The process of changing oil involves removing the old oil from the vehicle’s engine and adding fresh oil. The reason why changing oil in a vehicle engine is important is because as the engine parts move they rub against each other and create friction which generates heat and wear in the parts. Now the oil in an engine lubricates the moving parts reducing friction and wear and at the same time absorbing the heat generated and hence ensuring that the engine parts work together effectively and efficiently. After a period of time the oil in the engine breaks down and its quality deteriorates, this is due to the dust and other contaminants. Hence the oil is not able to lubricate the engine parts and absorb the heat generated. Therefore if you own a car you need to change the oil before it looses its quality. Changing oil is done often depending on the manufacturers specification. Precautions...

...It is very apparent that today’s generation has changed greatly since generation of the “baby boomers”. Children in the current generation are coming into a completely different world than it was just 30 years ago. From almost every kid owning a cell phone, televisions being flat, and social networking, it is obvious this isn’t the same world that our grandparents, and even our parents were raised in. Looking back at the generation of the “baby boomers”, it’s hard to even imagine what life would have been like. The book starts out with the notion that kids these days are taught to be their selves and not care what others think. Parents of the generation me children teach their kids to do whatever makes them happy, and giving them the idea that “your way is the right way”. Also a main focus that parents and teachers both focus on is teaching the children to love themselves for who they are and have a high self-esteem. Generation me kids took these idea and ran with it. Kids these days are more individualistic than any other generation in the past. From infants, children are taught to make their own decisions, and even have an influence on the decisions made by their family. Parents and mentors of the children want them to express their selves in any way they want to and be whatever they want to be. They believe that as long their child is expresses themselves as they want, and get what they want, than that will raise the child’s self-esteem. But with children having a higher...

Strategy Partnership

...Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition (LIMA). The topic discussed during the interview is on TD transformation planned. The transformation of TD is based on “ARMY 2 10 Plus 10” planned which started in 2004 and will continue until 2020 and beyond. The focus of this transformation planned is strategic transformation on the changes of equipment to cope up with current environment; the changes in threat and technological advancement on military hardware act as driving force for TD transformation. The transformation focuses on training and operational equipment together. However this transformation planned is not definite because of uncertain financial budget. TD could not decide on the equipment early on and must wait for the approve budget. Other than uncertain budget, Army also faces with the problem of underperforming contractors which resulted in delay in delivery and cancellation of project. Issues The transformation planning is not details enough since the type of equipment that going to be change or procure could not be decided earlier due to uncertain financial allocation that will be provided by the government. The loose planning may spell disaster in the process of transformation. The underperforming contractors also raised the eyebrows; where contract had been terminated which cause valuable time and money. Discussion The type of transformation is strategic in nature because the army is modernizing their forces to suit with current environment...
