Without them, people would lose sense of what is important and behave in a disheveled manner causing chaos. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, it is evident that control and order are necessary for a society to function well, due to the basic need of productivity, safety, and unity that structure provides. Firstly, when humans are being controlled they follow orders and complete the work that has to be done. If all members in a society are ordered to do some work, the result will not only be achieved but achieved in a shorter amount of time. In “Lord of the Flies”, when Ralph addresses the boys he says: “So we’ve got to decide if this is an island. Everybody must stay round here and wait and no go away. Three of us-if we take more we’d all get mixed, and lose each other-three of us will go on an expedition and find out.” (Golding 20) In this quote, Ralph gives out orders to the boys in his tribe and explains why certain things should or should not be done. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the boys on the island experience irrational fears as a result of their immaturity and inexperience. The boys are afraid of what they cannot see. They are overwhelmed with the whole situation on the island and which is causing extreme fear within themselves. The boys are afraid of what they cannot see. In the novel, they are afraid of a monster known as the “beastie” even though they are not even sure if it exists. As kids, we are afraid of what we cannot see as well such as monsters under our bed, or in our closet. When we get scared we call our mom or dad to make our fears go away but the boys did not have that option. They were all by themselves. Since the boys were so young, they had no idea of what exactly could be in the wilderness. ...How effectively does Golding anticipate de conflicting forces of good and evil at the beginning of the novel? In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding permanently creates situations where good and evil are confronted. This contrast is made evident through different resources: behaviour of the characters, forces of nature, metaphors, contrasts and other literary devices. These dense forces flow within a primitive environment where leadership based on physical superiority will take over the ethical principles of civilisation. Conflicts between good and evil, represented through the contrasts of civilization versus savagery, order against chaos, and reason in opposition to impulse, will take over the island and pull the children apart. But how does the author introduce us to this rivarly and what is he trying to show us? I would say that Golding’s approach, so as to make the reader perceive the permanent parallel between good and evil, runs along three strategic lines or levels. The first way in which he approaches the conflicting forces involves actual behaviours of the children that bring forth good or evil ways. These are built upon the characters’ actions which are based on their values, morals and ethics. By doing this, Golding begins to expose the theory that there is always a power struggle present in human beings. This is firstly unmasked in pages 29 to 30.
