In this piece of work I am going to review the book ‘Love On The Dole’, written by Walter Greenwood. The story is based in ‘Hanky Park’ which is a fictional place on the outskirts of Salford in Manchester. The novel is written about the old days and describes in great detail struggles that many ordinary working class people face in life. The story in this book tells us of the social issues regarding unemployment and social deprivation.
The story is based in a neighbourhood where residents would help each other where possible, even though many of them did not have a lot to offer. It tells us of the hardworking jobs that children had to do, for a very low wage. Many of the boys got taken on in factories for an apprentice when they were very young but then got laid off as soon as they hit they age where they would have to be paid a man’s wage. After this happened many men faced trouble getting back into work and therefore had to live a life on the dole. As if having to live off the dole wasn’t bad enough they then had to face a ‘means test’. Anybody wanting to go on the dole would have to have an assessment to make sure they were eligible to receive the funding. The whole family would get looked at to see if they had enough money to support them. This meant that in many cases one wage had to be enough to support a whole family. They faced many struggles.
In order for these people to get money to be able to put food on the table and pay their rent to keep a roof over their heads, they had to find ways to collect money. A popular way for people to get their hands on some money was to go to the pawnbrokers and pawning their goods. Many did this every week in order to survive. Pawning items such as husbands ‘Sunday bests’ to old bedding.
The story follows two particular characters, Harry Hardcastle and Sally Hardcastle. Sibling’s who grew up in ‘Hanky Park’ in poverty. Sally sees her chance to escape this poverty and the pawnbrokers rush lifestyle by falling in love with Larry Meath, a self-educated Marxist. Larry is sick and rivals more powerful than him start to get Sally’s attention.
Harry Hardcastle worked in a pawn shop. He longed to join the Marlowe’s engineering team for a long time. Harry made it and got an apprentice working for Marlowe. The job didn’t work out how he thought it was going to and was soon set in misery. His misery soon set aside when he starts a relationship with a woman named Helen. His happiness was soon over as he gets laid off, Helen falls pregnant and he is refused the dole after going through ‘the means test’.
I really enjoyed reading this book and glad that I chose to review this particular book. I find the way Greenwood displays the struggles that were faced in the community so truthfully very interesting. The characters that he wrote about are in such detail that you can imagine everything about them, from their looks to their voice and how they are perceived in their society. He tells in such great detail it is almost like a play of the book in your head. I have never read a book with such great detail like this before and found it very exciting. He writes about the financial struggles like everyone is going through it and makes you feel like you are already aware of these struggles. It is almost like you are living the struggles with the story. I now feel that I am more aware of the social issues that have been present in the past. I feel it is a great way to gain more of an understanding and think it would be a great read for high school pupils to learn about these issues.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book I often found the old English literature hard to understand. On a few occasions I had to re-read sentences to try and make sense of them. I also found some of the slang words that used to be used hard to follow as I didn’t know what many of them meant. To resolve this I looked up the words that I wasn’t sure of on the internet to make myself understand what they meant.
Because there are so many characters that are mentioned in the book a lot I sometimes forgot who was who and had to take a minute to sit and think about the characters and remind myself who was who.

When Unorthodox Religions Become Inhumane or Unjust

...or perceived as inhumane or unjust by specifically focusing on unorthodox religions during a twenty year period between the 1950’s through the 1970’s. The research focuses on five different unorthodox religions: The People’s Temple, founded by Jim Jones, Heaven’s Gate, founded by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, Scientology, founded by L. Ron Hubbard, Children of God, founded by David Berg, and Branch Davidians, founded by David Koresh. Langone, M. D. (1995). These five unorthodox religions or cults may have had or have different doctrines and practices, but research shows that they may all share the common trait of being inhumane or unjust. Rationale/Thesis Statement In the International Cultic Studies Association article, by Dole and Eichel (1985), a survey was conducted about dangerous practices associated with cults and referenced different actions that they deemed destructive, from coercion to enslavement, which they believe to be inhumane and unjust. This research study will attempt to uncover some of these practices and find out what draws people to these unorthodox religions or cults. Likewise, this research project also attempts to determine the point at which practices become inhumane or unjust. It’s interesting to note, that three out of the five unorthodox religions or cults included in this research were started in the mid-1950’s, at around the time of frequent U.F.O. sightings in the southwest United States. “And I looked, and behold, there were four...

...Love a la Mode Certainly, the play can be seen as a dramatic presentation of varieties of love in the England of the year 1700. Central is the delicate handling of the love game as played by Mirabell and Millamant. They represent the ideal of the Restoration attitude, intense yet balanced, their love based on mutual esteem with no surrender of individuality. Contrasted with it are Mirabell's earlier and quite ambiguous love affair with Mrs. Fainall; the illicit love of Fainall and Mrs. Marwood, presumably passionate, but wholly without mutual trust; the spurious court young Witwoud pays to Millamant; the direct and somewhat coarse approach of Sir Wilfull; and, at the opposite extreme completely, the aging and undignified longings of Lady Wishfort, vain, unrealistic, over-eager, desperate, and a little pathetic. Love and Money Such an approach is closely related to that of love a la mode, although they are not identical. In the world whose way is presented here, love and money are values to be taken into account at all times. The sincerity of Mirabell's love does not make him lose sight of the importance of Millamant's fortune. Fainall marries for money to support an illicit love; apparently the thought of marrying Mrs. Marwood without adequate money (however "adequate" might be defined) is unthinkable. Money is Lady Wishfort's sole hold over her child and her ward. Even the marriage of the servants is built on a promise of a handsome sum of money. This is the world's way. Love...

...models that we discussed in class. More specifically, I chose to explore the subject of Fatuous Love, as well as the idea of Coercive and Reward Power. In the movie, there is a rather quick and overly passionate relationship that develops between the “mean girl”, Regina George, and the love interest of the movie, Aaron Samuels. Firstly, the relationship happens for all of the wrong reasons. Regina only is with Aaron to spite her “friend” Cady Herron. In the text it defines fatuous love as, “passion and commitment in the absence of intimacy”...

Welfare Reform Argument Analysis

...The main consequence of a welfare free society is that many people will be very unhappy. One should expect this aftereffect because of man's nature to want to receive without doing anything to earn it. These people enjoy the flow of funds from the government without them having to work for it. One good example of this consequence is the recent occurrence in the country of Greece. Jacob G. Hornberger, founder and president of The Future of Freedom Foundation, wrote an article entitled "The Bankruptcy of Greece's Welfare State." In this article, he stated, "Rather than cut the dole to match the tax revenues, which will make the dole recipients angry, the government proceeds to borrow the difference and continue increasing the amounts paid for the dole." For this reason, the country of Greece is now bankrupt (Hornberger). This event occurs to a country when many of its people are dependent on welfare. When a country becomes bankrupt, it has no money; and when it has no money, welfare recipients cannot receive any funds. Naturally, those of Greece's people who were receiving funds from the government are not going to be happy with the present circumstances because now they have to work to make a living; that is, they will not be able to live life as easily as they did before. Hornberger also points out in his article that the United States will likewise become bankrupt if it...

Administrative Ethics

...Administrative Ethics Jolinda Chavez HCS/335 July 24, 2011 Katherine Rossiter Administrative Ethics Core Problems in the Health System According to the article, Crossing Our Lines; Working Together to Reform the U.S. Health System, by Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, and Bob Dole, “The problems policymakers seek to resolve through comprehensive health reform are significant. Today, the nation’s health care system focuses primarily on treating illness and not improving population health. Additionally, health care spending and premiums are rising at a rate that is unsustainable for our nation’s families, businesses, and governments. Growth in health care costs is much higher than growth in wages and gross domestic product (GDP). Consequently, despite a wider range of better medical treatments becoming available, more and more people are struggling to afford even the most basic levels of care. Particularly in the face of the recent economic downturn, growing numbers of people are losing their jobs and the health benefits those jobs provide. Many others are finding that they can no longer afford to pay monthly insurance premiums and out-of-pocket cost sharing for needed medical services. Rising cost trends also extend to public health care programs, with states forced to cut other services, including education, to maintain their Medicaid programs. The federal government’s long-term fiscal problem is largely related to cost and demographic trends that are causing unsustainable...

Hamlet

...In this interesting play, Hamlet, by Shakespeare, I've learned of the tragic events Prince Hamlet has dealt with. Starting from mourning his fathers death, King Hamlet, and than shortly after that his mother, Queen Gertude marries his uncle, Claudius. The play starts out introducing us to the watchmen, Horatio, Marcellus and Bernardo. There is a ghost on the platform of the castle that reappears around the same time every night. Other than horrify the men the spirit does not speak to them. The play than goes into the next scene in which the now, King Claudius is making a speech. His speech a mockery to Prince Hamlet says things of the sort, "With mirth in funeral and with dirge in marriage, In equal scale weighing delight and dole--'' By this he is saying that the death of his brother although being very sad is balanced with happiness in the marriage to his brothers widowed wife, Queen Gertude. To add insult to injury Claudius tells Hamlet not to mourn for too long, that is normal to lose a father and to think of him as a father instead! "How is it that the clouds still hang on you?" "Whose common theme is death of fathers, and who still hath cried, from the first corse till he that died to-day, 'This must be so.' We pray you, throw to earth this unrevealing woe, and think of us as of a father." From this interaction between King Claudius, Queen Gertude and Hamlet in Act 1, Scene 2, we learn that the only one still in mourning is Prince Hamlet, which shows he is the only one of...

...A B C LIFE = A Balance Christian Life (Colossians 3:18-21) “Wife, submit to your own husband, as is fitting in the Lord. Husband, love your wife and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Parents, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.” There are 4 areas in LIFE. Each of this area is not to be pursuit independently; but interdependent to each other; and that converge to a Central Object. What is this Central Object? It is our BELIEF; and that is FAITH in a Living GOD Our faith life is a marathon. It is a Divine Commitment to a lifelong spiritual race. Faith in God is the Central Concept of Christianity. One may be called a Christian only; if one has faith in God. Through faith there is a personal relationship with our God, our Father. In the O.T. the concept of faith is to ‘accept and believe’ God’s covenant; to trust in His Word that He alone is God and to commit one’s life to His promises for the present and future. The N.T. concept of faith is the same in principle. It is ‘have faith in God, and our Lord Jesus.’ Paul declared: “I know WHOM I have believed.” (2Timothy 1:12) He knows a PERSON, the Lord Jesus. He DID NOT say: I know WHAT I believed. That means, he did not believed just in Doctrine, Religion, and not even his own faith; but it is ‘believe and faith in Lord Jesus Christ’. Our God is a Sovereign God and also a Personal God. Even He controls the whole universe; but...

Self-Sacrifice In The Kite Runner

As Amir explains the circumstances from his own perspective, “Baba [wrestles with] bears his whole life. Losing his young wife. Raising a son by himself” (PAGE # - Chpt 13). However, the personal testament of viewing such a heart wrenching fatality, is not enough to fully demolish Baba’s relational barriers of detachment and distance. As a standoffish man, Baba is minimal in outward expressions of affection and concern towards Amir. Nonetheless, he is financially savvy and ensures his wson receives the utmost blessions money provides. Living in a society flooding with illiteracy and poverty, Amir has the privilege to attend to school, yet dreads the “long school days sweating in tightly packed, poorly ventilated classrooms learning to recite ayats from the Koran, struggling with those tongue-twisting, exotic Arabic words” (97). Commonly complaining about all that Baba graciously doles, Amir lacks appreciation for his life impressive circumstances. In anaylsis of The Kite Runner, Doctor Horrible of Humanities 360 concludes that beyond Amir’s ample priveleges, “he is deprived of an emotional connection with his father, so he isvery jeaous of those who receive Baba’s attention” (SOURCE). Therefore, Amirs has a reciprocal deficiency because he is unable to recognize his father’s expressions of love. Nonetheless, Baba continues to offer all that he can muster, and, in turn, receives a status...

...ISSUES ON HIGH ABSEENTEISM AND DRIVER SHORTAGE Problem Statement The next problem that PHSB was faced is the high abseenteism and driver shortage. This is greatest challenge facing PHSB and not merely limited to smaller transport companies. With greater attention to operate closer to just-in time, the transport companies were pressured to deliver CPO to the refineries on time. Just-in-time operate under the concept of receiving raw materials, products and parts as they are needed, rather than days or even weeks before. This allows businesses to significantly cut inventory costs by having fewer unnecessary supplies on hand and far less material to store. As effective as just-in-time delivery is, it can be difficult to coordinate large amounts of shipments efficiently, especially when dealing with shipments that vary in size and destination.  In using just-in-time delivery, the fact that most companies require drivers to be on the road for days at a time. And of course they will be tired after their stint. The irregular routes and the days away from home are difficult for many drivers. This leads to the high abseenteism and driver shortage because they need to be ready at all time regardless what they are doing. Other than that, the problem is the matter of remuneration package that these drivers are getting from PHSB. Since PHSB was a small family-owned company, it was unable to provide an attractive remuneration package to the drivers. The hardwork of PHSB’s drivers were...
