The assessment program at Columbus State has four specific and interrelated purposes: to improve student academic achievement to improve teaching strategies to document successes and identify opportunities for program improvement to provide evidence for institutional effectiveness.
In class you are assessed and graded on your achievement of the outcomes for this course. You may also be required to participate in broader assessment activities.

TEXTBOOKS:
Kirszner, Laurie G., and Stephen R. Mandell. The Blair Reader. 7th ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, 2011.
Fulwiler, Toby, and Alan R. Hayakawa. The Blair Handbook. 5th ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, 2007.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
Handouts, in-class and out-of-class writing, group work, peer revision and editing, writing workshops, individual conferences, laboratory work. Lecture/discussion of assigned readings and techniques for critical analysis. Discussion of library tools and research methods. Process techniques for working through steps of research project.

COURSEWORK EXPECTATIONS:
Columbus State’s policy states that students at schools receiving funds from the State of Ohio should be expected to do 30 hours of work for each credit earned. That means students should expect to spend about 2 hours on work outside of class for each hour spent in class (Policy Number 5-05). Students need to be aware of their out-of-class responsibilities, and that the inability to fulfill the requirements for a course may result in failure

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Because this course requires class participation, interpersonal interaction, and peer review, students are expected to attend all classes for the full class time or participate actively in online courses as required. Students who have more than the equivalent of one week of absence may find their grades seriously affected; those who have more than the equivalent of two weeks of absence may be in danger of failing the course. Students must attend class in order to participate in class; therefore, absences and tardiness will result in an automatic reduction in participation points. I expect students to arrive promptly to our class. Online courses require active weekly participation including submission of weekly assignments and weekly postings to the discussion board.

LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY:
Assignments are due within the first five minutes of class on the posted due date or by midnight on Sundays for online courses. I do not accept late homework assignments including journals and reading responses. I do not allow make-ups of peer review sessions or in-class self-review activities, which must be done in class with your class peers (or online, for web courses).

For online students, any required online discussion postings must be done on time for credit. Most online discussion board postings require that students post a minimum of 75 words in their initial post and also respond to at least two other student posts for full credit.

I will allow essay assignments to be submitted late – with a penalty. Final essays that are not submitted by the date and time due will receive 10% off and may only be submitted up to one week late. There will be NO exceptions to this rule. Students in online courses are responsible for submitting assignments correctly for credit – as rich text files and all work within ONE file. If you are having problems with using the assignment feature in Blackboard to submit assignments, please contact the Help Desk.

STANDARDS AND METHODS FOR EVALUATION:
20% - Essay #1: Focused Narrative: Exploring a Rhetorical Situation within a Community and Locating, Incorporating, and Crediting a Secondary Source (4 pages/1000 words) 20% - Essay #2: Cultural Critique: Exploring How Conversations are Developed and Negotiated within Communities/Texts and Locating, Incorporating, and Crediting Multiple Sources (4 pages/1000 words) 25% - Essay #3: Research Synthesis & Persuasion: Selecting, Sustaining, and Supporting an Original Topic and Exploring How Constructions of Power Operate While Engaging in Varied Research Methods (5-8 pages/1250-2000 words)

15% - Final Assessment: Reflective Self-Assessment

20% - Other: Journals, writing process work, writing exercises, reading responses, discussions, participation

GRADING SCALE:
90-100=A 80-89=B 70-79=C 65-69=D Below 65=E

WRITING PROCESS POLICY:
Essays, including drafts, must be typed and submitted with all requested process work to the instructor. If an essay is submitted without any process work or without a works cited page, you will receive a 0 for that assignment. Draft essays without works cited pages will not be reviewed. You must submit any written instructor comments given during drafting process (online students can paste their draft documents into the revision submissions). I will provide grades on assignments within one and a half weeks of submission, whenever possible.
ESSAY AND RESEARCH PROFICIENCY:
Students MUST leave Essay and Research with the ability to construct, develop, and support their own ideas presented in the form of a logical and well-reasoned analysis that responsibly and effectively incorporates multiple texts. To demonstrate proficiency in ENGL 102 and to pass the course, students must earn a "C" or better. Students who receive a "D" as a final grade may not enroll in any subsequent Communication Skills courses for which 102 is a prerequisite (e.g., ENGL 200, literature courses, etc.). Students must submit all assigned essays to pass the class.

TUTORING SERVICES:
The Writing Center (245 Franklin Hall, 614-287-5717) is a free service that may be beneficial to you. The Writing Center also offers tutoring services at the Dublin and Westerville sites. Students also have access to the Online Writing Center, a free service that can be accessed through the Blackboard site under My Communities. Some students may be asked by the instructor to use these writing centers for assistance with specific writing problems encountered during English 102. STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT:
As an enrolled student at Columbus State Community College, you have agreed to abide by the Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the Student Handbook. You should familiarize yourself with the Code. The Columbus State Community expects you to exhibit high standards of integrity, respect, and responsibility. Any confirmed incidence of misconduct, including plagiarism and other forms of cheating, will be treated seriously and in accordance with
College Policy and Procedure 7-1-0. Academic misconduct (cheating) is described as:
 Using open textbooks, notes, electronic devices, or other assistance during an examination, except those that have been authorized by the instructor.
 Copying from another person’s work during an examination.
 Collaborating with another person on an assignment in a manner not authorized by the instructor.
 Obtaining, distributing, or using the contents of an unadministered test.
 Substituting for another student or permitting any person to substitute for oneself in an examination.
 Submitting an assignment purporting to be the student’s original work which has been wholly or partly created by another person.
 Presenting as one’s own ideas, organization, or wording of another person without acknowledgement of sources.
 Knowingly permitting one’s own work to be submitted by another student as if it were the student’s own.

Plagiarism (English Department Policy):
Plagiarism, such as borrowing passages or whole documents from the Internet or other sources, and presenting another author’s actual words, ideas, organization, or conclusions as one’s own, will not be tolerated. Students who borrow another writer’s material must document their sources accordingly. Students who present as their own the material written by others will be reported to the Dean of Student Life and penalized. A confidential record of the incident will be kept on file pursuant to the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Because the penalty is severe, ranging from zero for the assignment to failing for the course to academic dismissal, all students should avoid the slightest hint that they have used borrowed material without giving credit. FINANCIAL AID ATTENDANCE REPORTING:
Columbus State is required by federal law to verify the enrollment of students who participate in Federal Title IV student aid programs and/or who receive educational benefits through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. It is the responsibility of the College to identify students who do not commence attendance or who stop attendance in any course for which they are registered and paid. Non-attendance is reported quarterly by each instructor and results in a student being administratively withdrawn from the class section. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for information regarding the impact of course withdrawals on financial aid eligibility. Instructors will electronically report your last date of attendance at the time of time reporting is required. If you are systematically dropped due to lack of attendance, I will not give you permission to re-enroll in the course.

WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSE:
If you decide to drop this course, you must do so officially. Failure to withdraw officially from a course will result in a failing grade recorded on your transcript. Schedule Adjustment Forms are available from the Counseling/Advising Center or the Registration Office. The deadline for withdrawing is during the seventh week of the quarter.

AMERICAN DISABILITIES ACT STATEMENT:
It is the college policy to provide reasonable accommodations to students. If you would like to request such accommodations because of a physical, mental, or learning disability, please contact your instructor and the Department of Disability Services, 101 Eibling Hall (287-2570).

WEATHER EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:
Columbus State rarely closes for severe weather; however, if the college does close, major stations will carry such information. Assignments due on the day that the college is closed will be due the next scheduled class period. Students who live in areas which fall under a Level 3 Emergency (all roadways closed to non-emergency personnel) should not attempt to drive to the college even if classes are in session. However, students who miss class because of a Level 3 Emergency in their area are still responsible for assignments as indicated on the syllabus. It is your responsibility to contact me to determine how to make up the missed assignment.

GENERAL CLASSROOM CONDUCT:
The intent of our class discussions and topics is to focus on ideas, NOT feelings. Please respect a person’s right to speak during class discussion, including me. Online discussions should exhibit professional and respectful language.

For students who meet in the classroom, please turn off communication devices (mobile phones, pagers, etc.) during class to the point that no one knows you even possess such a device. You will be asked to leave if I see or hear your electronic devices! Visitors or recording devices are not permitted in the classroom without advanced permission from the instructor. Please do not bring children to class or leave them unsupervised in the building. Per college rules, there should be no eating, drinking or tobacco use in the classroom.

Love Is Love

...men and women to form stable families to bear and raise children”. This is a good point of view from him, but why does loving someone of the same sex not give the right to raise a family and be just as happy? Some might say its discrimination; some might say it is unfair to humanity. Is it fair to take away the pursuit of happiness because a couple of the same sex wants the same as a couple of the opposite sex? Marriage brings on many new roles for couples like buying and taking care of a home, buying a vehicle, joining bank account, picking medical and life insurance. These rights of marriage are stripped from same-sex couples, not giving the equal right to be with the person they love and care for and what to build a life together with. Love is love, why should it be based on who you are in love with? When looking a same-sex marriage, I wonder if a person is making the choice to be with someone of the same sex, or if it is all they know and...

Love

...Love is beautiful. Love is unconditional. Love is non judgemental. Love is care. Love is acceptance. Love is bliss. Love is pure. Love is serene. Love is calm. Love is silent. Love is not I, me or you. Love is us. Love is not wanting or expecting, Love is giving and accepting. Love is a strength that gives you courage to stand and act in a situation when you don’t even have the capacity to move. Love is a vibration that makes you strong. Love is a signal that binds the souls together. What I feel for my mother is Love. What I feel for my father is Love. What I feel for my sister is Love. What I feel for my brother is Love. What I feel for my grandparents is Love. But I don’t know how to show this Love. I never kissed my brother, or hugged my sister unoccassionaly or thanked my parents unreasonably or gifted my grandparents ever. I just don’t need these gestures to show my unconditional emotion to them. Do I? Dressed in a gorgeous piece came my princess and asked, “How am I looking Di?” And my “Yeah!!” Is enough for her to know that she is looking “Just Perfect”. On the Christmas Eve this year, a bundle of beautifully packed gift lied under my pillow. Holding them in my hands I rushed to my father and said, “Papa!! Santa gave me this”. And he knows that I was thanking MY PAPA SANTA. No matter how much treacherous our fights may be, and the next moment we are together playing Subway Surfers. This is my brother. Do I need to tell him SORRY explicitly? NO. Long days at...

... 10/14/2013 When I think of the word love it gives me chills because this is a powerful word. Today I am going to talk about the three people in this world that I know and have knowledge that they love me. They are my husband and my two sons. I have had a lot of people to ask me how you know for a fact that your husband loves you. That answer is very clear and simple to me, because its not just one thing he does to show me its many things. When I look at my husband I see a forever with him. We have been married almost nine years now and were just as in love today as we were nine years ago. We still tell each other how much we love each other on a daily basis. We write each other love poems to each other. We love to do everything together. We have our moments when we just look at each other and gaze into each other’s eyes and just smile. Even though we have been so long we still talk about our future together and how we can make it better. He loves to plan things in advance and he loves to reassure me that there is a future for us together. Every year since we have been married he has wanted to renew our vows, because he say that he would remarry me every day if he could. He always gives me compliments on a daily even if I know I look a hot mess he tells me how beautiful I am. He loves to talk and he is very kind and gentle with me. I have never met anyone that opened up to me like...

Love

...Nothing can come close to the love that a mother feels for her children. Most women are inherently excellent mothers. Women carry their young before they are born and then continue to nurture them throughout their childhood and even into adulthood. Mothers make sure that their children are safe and happy throughout their childhood. It is the unconditional love that a mother feels that drives these feelings. It is hard to describe the feeling that a mother has towards her children. In fact, most people do not understand unless they become a mother themselves. Raising children comes with its own share of frustrations, from the needy new born baby that requires regular care to the sullen teenager, a mother's job is anything but easy. A famous saying states that "God could not be everywhere and so he invented mothers", these words are a great inspiration to mothers across the world. When all is well, a mother puts her children before anything else, including their own comfort and happiness. Mothers give an awful lot of support to their children, whether it involves very visible support or simple background encouragement. Not only do mothers support their children, but they also often hold the whole family structure together. This role is not always plain sailing. A mother can also be upset or hurt. Remember that a mother often takes the fallout for the toddler tantrums and the teenage angst. Despite this, mothers, generally, will love their children no matter what they do. ...

Love

...Love From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search For other uses, see Love (disambiguation). Archetypal lovers Romeo and Juliet portrayed by Frank Dicksee Love is an emotion of a strong affection and personal attachment.[1] Love is also a virtue representing all of human kindness, compassion, and affection —"the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another".[2] Love may describe actions towards others or oneself based on compassion or affection.[3] In English, love refers to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from pleasure ("I loved that meal") to interpersonal attraction ("I love my partner"). "Love" may refer specifically to the passionate desire and intimacy of romantic love, to the sexual love of eros, to the emotional closeness of familial love, to the platonic love that defines friendship,[4] or to the profound oneness or devotion of religious love[5], or to a concept of love that encompasses all of those feelings. This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, compared to other emotional states. Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts.[6] Love may be understood as part of the survival instinct, a function to keep...

I want to love you so deeply; our love bleeds into the world and kills hate. Our love is that powerful, that strong…our love can be great. It’s up to you and I to decide that this is the love we want. Pure love is an endangered emotion…It’s been diluted too many times with pain, fear, abuse, and distrust…. We have to cleanse our love of the past, so that it can heal our present…fuel our tomorrow.
