Chronic Disease Risk Assessment

Take one of the health risk assessments located on the LRC website. After completing the assessment, write a 500- to 750-word summary that includes the following:

• Description of the disease

• Risk factors for the disease

• Lifestyle choices you can make in your life to decrease your modifiable risk factors for this disease

• Login to the student website.

• Click on the Programs tab at the top of the page, and then on Life Resource Center under Services.

• From the LRC home page, click on Thriving.

• Click on Health Tools.

Leukemia has to deal with malignant disorder that involves the bone marrow and blood systems. Leukemia is when you have an uncontrolled growth of abnormal white blood cells. Bone marrow has to deal with soft tissue in the center of the bones that blood cells are produced. Leukemia means white blood cells. Your white blood cells are used to fight infections and other foreign substances in your body. Leukemia is cancer of the white blood in the bone marrow. A person that has leukemia suffers from an abnormal production of white blood cells which generally leukocytes. Some leukemia are hereditary forms which means it is pass down from family member. Some of the risk factors are Previous cancer treatment, Genetic disorders, Certain blood disorders, Exposure to high levels of radiation, Exposure to certain chemicals, Smoking, Family history of leukemia. What can cause leukemia is Artificial ionizing radiation, Viruses - HTLV-1 (human T-lymphotropic virus) and Hiv (human immunodeficiency virus), Benzene and some petrochemicals, Alkylating chemotherapy agents used in previous cancers, Maternal fetal transmission (rare), Hair dyes, Genetic predisposition, Down syndrome. Electromagnetic energy. When it comes to Genetic predisposition it has some to deal with a single or multiple genes in twins. Previous cancer treatment has to deal with chemotherapy and radiation from another cancer. Genetic disorders such as Down syndrome can increased your risk of leukemia. Certain blood disorder suck as myelodysplastic syndromes is also can increase the risk of leukemia. A person that is exposure to high levels of radiation that has survivor a nuclear reactor accident will increase the risk of getting cancer. Benzene that is in gasoline and used by chemical industry can also have an increased the risk of leukemia. Smoking will increases the acute myelogegenous leukemia. If you have or had a family member that was diagnosed with leukemia that it will increase your changes that you will get it. I would try to stay away from people that smoking because I don’t want to increase my risk of getting it. I won’t dye my hair because hair dye can cause leukemia. Hair dye has a chemical in it that can cause it. When you get diagnosed with leukemia then your doctor may ask you if you want to do a bone marrow biopsy. Some form of leukemia requires no therapy and others require urgent medical assistant. Leukemia can be treated with chemotherapy but radiotherapy and biological therapy is used in certain subtypes or leukemia. Bone marrow transplantation wills most like be recommended form some types of leukemia. There are different types of leukemia like ALL(Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia), CML ( Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia), AML ( Acute Myelogenous Leukemia) and CLL (Chronic Lymphoblastic Leukemia). These are the four important type of leukemia. The lymphocytic leukemia has to deal with the white blood cells that have to deal with the lymphoid subtypes. The Myelogenousleukemia has to deal with the white blood cells that have to deal with the myeloid subtypes. The lymphoid along with the myeloid is critical components the cause the immune system to be mature but without them the immune system will not mature and help protects your body. I try stay away for anything toxic, chemicals, drugs and radiation because they are also some risk to leukemia. Leukemia cell can infiltrate you major organ like you kidney, liver, spleen. It can make your kidneys impaired and your liver and spleen to become enlarged. It can cause the organs to malfunction or fail. If you leave this disease untreated susceptible fatigue and cause excessive bleeds and infection until your body becomes defenseless and make everything very serious. Leukemia can be fatal because you can die from internal bleeding. Your spleen will filter out the aging red blood cells and platelet. When the spleen gets to become enlarged then it will do its job too well because it will remove all the healthy red blood cells and platelets. Without the normal white blood cell count then that will increase the risk of leukemia. Without the normal red blood cell count then that will cause fatigue, weakness, and anemia. Also without the normal platelet count then that will increase the risk of bleeding.
