03.05 Media and Politics

Name:_____________________________________

Assessment: You’ve been asked by a popular news organization to create a web article for their official website that will help the public understand the role media plays in politics. Your product will first explain your analysis of a media item and then describe how the role of media in politics has changed over time.

1. Choose a visual, text, or other media item that is political in nature. For example – watch a political commercial – you can find those here: http://www.livingroomcandidate.org/commercials/2012

http://www.livingroomcandidate.org/commercials/1972/mcgovern-turnaround

2. Analyze

Paragraph 1 should include who created the media item, when, for whom, and for what purpose.

Paragraph 2 should explain the bias in the media item. What strategies does the media item use to persuade people? (examples are symbolism and emotional appeal)

Paragraph 3 answer the following question, in your own words… How have the media changed over time, and how has this affected political communication?

The media item titled The Living Room Candidate was created for the Nixon vs McGovern campaign in 1972, and was made by The November Group and the video was archived by the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. But wish all other campaign commercials, this media item was created to appeal to the voters so that they would vote for Nixon, it embraced a strategy showing McGovern’s view on certain standards such as “suggesting a benefit plan that would give away a thousand dollar bill to every man, woman and child in the country, and then saying maybe the thousand dollar figure isn't right.” Or “proposing a tax inheritance of over $500,000 at 100 percent, and then lowering it down and suggesting 77 percent. Which would attract to the emotional side of the voters, since they would invest

...Luffy left his village on a small boat. He then waited out upon the open sea for the Lord of the Coast. With a rubber fist, he punched the Sea King in the face. With plans to create his own Jolly Roger and to get at least ten crew members, he then decided to begin his journey as a pirate and sailed on. Luffy declared that he will become the Pirate King.[21] While sailing across the ocean, Luffy accidentally came across a whirlpool.[22] To escape from it, Luffy hid inside a barrel as the whirlpool sucked his boat in. He and his barrel were recovered some time later by some pirates who were in the service of Alvida. Luffy then came out from his barrel much to their surprise and met up with Coby. After defeating Alvida, Luffy was able to free Coby from his servitude and acquire a small boat. As he and Coby were sailing to the next island so that Coby could enlist in the Marines, Luffy decided to seek a bounty hunter who was imprisoned there. Luffy decided to ask the infamous pirate hunter, Roronoa Zoro, to become the first of his crew.[23] Luffy Asks Zoro to Join Crew Luffy asking the bounty hunter Zoro to become the first of his crew. Upon arriving in Shells Town, Luffy and Coby learn the truth about Zoro through Rika.[24] With this in mind, Luffy decided to free Zoro from Captain Morgan and Helmeppo.[25] With the promise of giving Zoro's swords back if he would join Luffy's crew,[26] Luffy went into the Marine Base and caught Morgan's wrath.[27] After witnessing Zoro's...

...breathing, me being one of them cried once I saw my father covered in blood from the enemies and his own. All the pirates that have been left alive wept in tears too as they see their strong captain who treated them all like his children, down on the grass, lifeless. I looked around at the aftermath and saw another sad scene between brothers. Monkey D. Luffy, a high bounty pirate was crying while carrying the body of his weak brother. He even shouted out loudly that everyone can hear his pain. He then laid his brother’s body down on the side of a rock and looked down in pain and sorrow, considering that he was very close to him. “It was harsh, wasn’t it?” I asked Luffy with a gentle voice as I walked closer to the two. “Yeah…” He trailed of in a soft tone, not tearing his eyes away from the ground. “You know, I think ace won’t want to see you like this” I said mentioning his brother’s name as I sat down on the ground next to him, trying to hide my own tears. “I guess so, he never wants me to save him or else he’ll feel weak” he replied with a small chuckle at the end. ‘Luffy,” a voice called out from the side of the forest, making Luffy look up to see Jinbei, one of the 7 Warlords that were in the battle. “I need to speak to you alone” he gestured. I stood up and walked away, not wanting to intrude. I walked back to the path leading to my father but stopped after feeling a slight shake. Out of curiosity I went back silently to look on what...

Luffy Luffy is the fearless captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. He knows when to retreat and also when to stay and fight, but he may have been different if he was a Marine instead. Luffy only became a pirate because of Shanks and he now has to fulfill his promise of returning Shank's hat once he's become a great pirate. If Luffy hadn't met Shanks, he would've only had Gary's influence to grow up with, most likely turning him into a Marine. Review of Anime One Piece

...When i first saw the cover of the anime one piece i thought to myself that well, the art isn't that fantastic and the storyline dosent seem all that interesting since i wasnt much into the pirate theme. The search for one piece, i thought it was going to be all indiana jones atmosphere. But when i actually read the manga boy i realized i was extremely wrong. Truth be told the first episode did not interest me much, what kept me going was this new concept of devil fruit power that i had not seen in any other anime, well ofcourse i wouldnt..that would be a copyright infringement i guess. Oh well moving on, i really fell in love with the main character Luffy. Now c'mon how can he be so funny and cool at the same time, yu cant help but love him. Slowly other crew members start joining and boy does the anime starts getting more interesting and interesting. All the crew members with their own history all having factors to be loved. I won't be spoiling the anime for you but trust me, the anime is extremely good. Being an avid anime fan i would really recommend it to everyone who likes a quality anime. And yes i still wait every week for the new chapter of the manga to be realeased plus i also watch the anime after reading the manga. The love i had for it still remains the same, actually my love has completely increased for it. Im gonna watch it to the end and i know this anime is never going to disappoint...

Modern Pirates

...David Taylor Ellis INTS 2130 Analysis paper Mar 29, 2015 Modern Pirates In some fictional works pirates are portrayed in a heroic way. For example, Luffy, captain of the main band of pirates in the popular anime cartoon One Piece, is depicted as a fun loving adventurer that chases his dreams. He is a character to be emulated. Unfortunately, the modern day Somali pirates of East Africa have that similar effect on some of the Somali people. According to the African Economic Development Institute (AEDI), the bigger and more sophisticated European and Asian fishing ships took advantage of the governmental collapse and the ensuing civil war in Somalia in 1991. With permission of the corrupt military leaders and landlords, they greedily over-fished leaving the poor Somalian fishermen with very little. By 1997, several European countries had polluted Somali waters with their waste worsening the problem for the locals. This forced the Somali fishermen to become the Somali pirates (AEDI 5). Pirates are very wealthy men in their country. In a place where everyone suffers in poverty, a little wealth can seem like the cowl of a cape crusader. Despite their reasoning, the actions of the Somali Pirates are negatively affecting Somalia, neighboring countries and the countries who are taking anti-piracy measures to stop them. In 2010 it is estimated that pirates indirectly cost their neighbors about 125 billion dollars (“Maritime piracy costs”). Egypt is losing revenue that comes from...
