Are You Ready Boots

...1: Characterisation of Lulu. Lulu seems to be self-assured and confident. This comes out it line 3 "Nancy Sinatra eat your heart out" and in line 8 "...all I could do after admiring myself". If she wasn't confident, she would not be admiring her own reflection in the mirror. She is also fashion-conscious, this is shown in the beginning of the story (line 5), when she buys an expensive pair of boots "they weren't just boots - they were actual Manolos". Only people interested in fashion would care if the boots were a brand a not. It also shows in line 11 that she is funny and has a sense of humour. "Grrrr... Copping a vamp pose..." In line 21, she reveals that there are two sides to her. The sensible side and the more pleasure-seeking or maybe irresponsible. "while the sensible side of my brain tried to reason with the champagne-fuddled one" At first she might seems to focus on the exterior, this comes out in line 83-84 "A good looking boyfriend..- Had a Porsche" , however she later reveals a more sensible side in line 133, where she looks beyond "the dashing, handsome exterior" and comes to the realisation that he is a "bigoted bore inside" (l. 134) 2: Comment on the role of the two male characters. In many ways, Spencer and Charlie represent the two sides there are to Lulu's personality. Spencer being the reasonable side by making her see Charlie...

The literature, Love Medicine, consisted of a series of separate, but connected stories of a group of Native Americans called the Chippewa. Mrs. Dalloway/Love Medicine Comparison

...A People Suppressed The suppression of women has occurred since the beginning of the century. There have always been women who have expressed their feelings on the matter in many different forms. Two such women are Virginia Woolf and Louise Erdrich. They use their cultures and time periods to show the ways in which women are suppressed, as well as, a silver lining for women to become empowered. These authors express their views through their literature, especially in their most well-known works, Mrs. Dalloway (Woolf) and Love Medicine (Erdrich). The women in their novels are suppressed in multiple ways. The characters are emotionally, physically, and sexually, and within their marriages. In Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway, the main character Clarissa Dalloway is a suppressed middle class wife, who enjoys throwing parties for guests. Clarissa is suppressed internally or emotionally by her time period and culture. She lives her life according what is and isn’t appropriate. Virginia Woolf wrote her novel with an emphasis on description, however in her writing she doesn’t go into much detail on certain incidents. Such incidents are those of intimate nature. Woolf writes these scenes with barely any description compared to the rest of the book. One such scene is that of Clarissa kissing another woman named Sally, when she was a young girl. The absence of depiction of detail on the matter shows the sexual suppression of women. “In her novels, sexual passion becomes masculine property...

Love Medicine Themes

...Love Medicine, by Louise Erdrich, is comprised of several correlated short stories about characters that live on a Native American reservation. They live on a Chippewa reservation in North Dakota. Love Medicine spans from roughly 1934 to 1984 and illustrates the characters at different times in their lives, mainly the most life changing events. The novel involves three different generations. There are many themes present in this novel that make the story seem more realistic to the reader. The three main themes are that of religion, survival, and Indian heritage. Religion has so many different meanings in this world. It can mean the belief in a godlike controlling power. It can mean the worship of that controlling power. It can also mean a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe. Each person has his or her own belief. Religion plays an important part in this novel. In the chapter titled, “Saint Marie,” readers find out that Marie Kashpaw is a catholic teenage girl trying to join the Sacred Heart Convent. Marie is discriminated by one of the nuns at the convent for being Indian. The nun, named Sister Leopolda, did very bad things to Marie to make her quit the...

True Love

...Cheryl Sutton English 112 Section G 10/31/13 The Meaning of True Love It’s not easy to find real love let alone love that lasts a lifetime, but in the story “Love Medicine” you get insight to a couple based on the observation of their grandson. Through the narrator, Lipsha Morrissey, we are able to learn about Grandma and Grandpa Kaspaw and how deep their connection is. Grandma Kaspaw demonstrates her first act of love by saving her grandson “she saved me from my own mother, who wanted to tie me in a potato sack and throw me in a slough.” (Erdrich 275) Grandma Kaspaw loved her family and did whatever it took to make sure they were taken care of. In the story Grandpa Kaspaw suffers from Alzheimer’s disease “So I didn’t really listen to hard when the doctor said this was some kind of disease old people got...” (Erdrich 276). This disease really begins to test the love that Grandpa and Grandma have for each other. It is very hard for Grandma to watch him go through this “second childhood” (Erdrich 275) as Grandpa calls it. During this time his behavior is erratic and he does things that are very out of character. The catalyst in this story is Lulu Lamartine, who is a female on the reservation that has had a crush on Grandpa her whole life. She takes advantage of Grandpas disease and allows there to be relations with herself and Grandpa. “but even Grandma had trouble keeping her patience once he started sneaking off to Lamartien’s place…. That’s...

...orchestra played three different composers musical works. Alan Berg, symphony selections from Lulu, there was also Claude Debussy’s Le Jet D’eau and Trois Ballades de Villon, and lastly there was Igor Stranvinsky’s The Firebird. This music was all from the Classical Period between 1750-1820. The first section that I choose to review was the last movement of Debussy’s music. The beginning of the fourth movements dynamics are Mezzo piano and with a tempo of accelerando. The soprano soloist begins singing allegro and builds the drama with her voice and with the help of the orchestra. The music soon climaxes fortissimo where the focal point is very dramatic and the orchestra is playing loud enough to her less of the soloist and more of the powerful sounds of the violins and the brass instruments in the orchestra. With many tempo changes, the music does an elaborate rise and fall beginning with much force and fortissimo and ending with a complete cadence that gives you a feeling of finality. I do think that the last cadence kind of left me feeling like I wanted more and didn’t want it to be over. I liked this piece very much but was sometimes annoyed with the close up of the soloist, because I kept becoming distracted from the music that was in the background. I love this period of music because it reminds me of a time period that I always was very interested in. A time where music was the story of people’s lives, it became more intense and dramatic but then could end in a dancing tune...

Lit Review

...short story “A Simple Heart” is challenging at times. Felicite has been misunderstood by many regarding her representation of religion. Her innocence is not to be look at as a burden, it allows her to share a good relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit had been reduced to taxidermy as it portrayed as Felicite’s per parrot Loulou. Felicite’s spiritual world had been reduced to something not permanent made the story difficult to evaluate the seriousness in regards to religion. After reevaluating the role Loulou played on Felicite’s life. “A Simple Heart” becomes a spiritual journey. With an open mind it is apparent that Felicite is worthy of sainthood through her dedication to her religion, loved ones and hard work. Flaubert did not make religion obvious at all times during the story. Felicite was extremely selfless, illiterate maid who devoted most of her life to other people. “Felicite did protect her mistress and the children in the face of a charging bull, even staying in front of the bull until she knew her mistress and the children were safe on the other side of the fence”(1824-25). There were no remarkable measures that are standard in declaring saints but Felicite’s steady faith is enough. Everyone she is close to including her beloved parrot Loulou that she stuffs after its death eventually desert her. This pushes her closer to her faith as it became a replacement for her physical and emotional losses. Throughout the entire story Flaubert...

...reminder to all that fashion can be fun, but she is also a reminder to all that individuality and uniqueness can absolutely define greatness. In a fast-paced, unpredictable industry like the fashion industry, it can be difficult for designers to remain true to their own vision and creativity. For Betsey Johnson, remaining true to herself and her unique views has appeared to be as simple and easy as getting out of bed in the morning. She doesn’t play by the rulebook; Betsey Johnson creates her own rulebook. Betsey Johnson was one of three children born on August 10, 1942 to parents, John and Lena. She was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, but she grew up in Terryville. From a very young age, she occupied most of her time with her two loves, drawing and dancing. The combination of these two hobbies became the foundation to her ultimate success as a fashion designer. Beginning from the age of four, Betsey trained in all types of dance. She became immersed with the costumes that were used for recitals and would often sketch her own ideas for these costumes. According to Betsey, her decision to pursue fashion design came when “I realized that making clothes is completing what a drawing can’t be – going from two-dimensional to reality”...
