Title : The Dilemma’s of Lupe: Seaman’s Wife

Introduction

Being a seafarer is such a lonely profession. This implies if your perception towards the career is forlorn. The seafarer’s are finding recreations for them to surpass the loneliness they feel while they are onboard. They find ways to entertain themselves. How about the families they left home? Their wives, who handle their families while they are onboard?

There are several descriptions of being a seafarer’s wife. According to Lloyds List Tribute, when they unveil the seafarer’s wives monument in Greece, “The face of the seafarer’s wife reveals courage, fortitude and determination, all of which she will need in the long months ahead, when no news will come of the success or otherwise of the voyage”. This is one of the descriptions that reflect the factual attitude of a seafarer’s wife.

On contrary, there is this Filipino film that uncovers the bad side of a seafarer’s wife, being unfaithful. Because of the loneliness and seclusions they feel, they are tempted to become unfaithful. There is another article which was published in a local newspaper where in a seaman’s wife and her lover was caught by her husband and charged by the authorities (Cebu Daily News/Wife,lover charged). This is a dreadful situation for the seafarer who’s working hard abroad without knowing that his wife is spending his money with a lover.

By this description and stories, some seafarers are not that confident about their wives. They are becoming doubtful if their spouses can abide their role as a wife, as a faithful wife. That is the main purpose of this case study. The researchers would like to know something about the wives of the seafarers, their feelings, their problems, their defences in the ‘unfaithful situation’, their lifestyles and their strategies in handling their families. Can they make it even without their husbands?

Theoretical Background

The researchers found one related study conducted by the students of University of Cebu- Maritime Education and Training Center. Their case study was a partial requirement for their research subject and it was entitled, “The Loneliness of the Spouses of the Seafarers Working Abroad” which focused on the feelings of the spouses when their husbands were onboard. After their enormous effort to complete their research, they concluded that from their findings, being away from their husbands was the reason why their respondents suffer loneliness. Another reason why the spouses suffered loneliness was because they were always thinking of their husbands safety. They would only have a relief after knowing that their husbands were all right. To cope up with the loneliness, they recommended that the wives must attend or participate in the programs/activities of their husbands manning agency/company like tree planting, parties and out-of-town vacations. The researchers also found this internet article (My Life at Sea.blogspot.com) on how seafarer’s wife misses her husband. How she misses waking up with her husband on her side, how she misses his kisses, their exchanging of I love yous and many more. That article can awake the minds of seafarers who are having an intuition that their wives are being unfaithful to them or vice versa.

Statement of the problem:

The purpose of this study is to determine the different dilemmas of being a

seafarer’s wife. Specifically, the study attempts to answer the following questions:

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a seaman’s wife?

2. What are their strategies in handling their families when their husbands are

onboard?

2.1. Are they contented with their monthly allotment?

3. How do they overcome the loneliness they feel if their husbands are away?

4. What are the lifestyles of being a spouse of an officer and a rating?

5. What are the reasons why some seafarer’s wife plunged in being unfaithful to

their husbands?

Significance of the Study

This case study will help the seafarers understand more the lives of their wives while they are working onboard. They can get justifications in some of the common problems between their families, their moneys and their relationship with their children. This will also help other seaman’s wife to realize that they are not the only ones who’re tormenting this kind of problem. Lastly, the researchers wanted this study to become an eye-opener to all the cadets who will come onboard and soon will also have their own families.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

DESIGN

This research is a case study of the life of the seafarer’s wife. The researchers will probe the experiences, problems et al. of a wife who is left alone to raise a family without their husband who is away onboard who carries a seafaring profession.

ENVIRONMENT

The researchers will conduct their study from the city of Valenzuela, the northernmost city in Metro Manila and towns of Liloan and Minglanilla in Cebu which is a province situated in the heart of Visayas. These places are some of the major sources of seafarers in the country.

RESPONDENTS

The researchers will use three respondents. Two of which are wives of officers onboard while the other one is a wife of a radio operator on Japanese vessels. Wife A is married for 17 years and they have 3 children. Wife B is a first time mom and married for 4 years. Wife C has 3 children and has been married for 30 years now. They will be provided with a questionnaire for them to fill up. They will also seat for an interview for the researchers to know their lifestyles as a seaman’s wife.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The researchers will use different research instrument like observation checklists, questionnaires and long probing interviews. The observation checklist serves as a guide for the researchers on how to observe their respondents while having the interview. They need to observe the respondents body language, et al. The questionnaire contains queries on how they handle their families, their stand in being unfaithful to their husbands and other issues that are connected with their lives as a seaman’s wife. The interviews aimed to know more about their life as a wife away from their husbands. These research instruments will definitely help the researchers to come up with this case study.

PROCEDURE

The researchers will thoroughly prepare their research instruments. They will divide the task assignments and the expenses that they will spend in performing the task. The researchers will inform their respondents about their case study, “The different dilemmas of being a seafarer’s wife” and ask for their cooperation in answering the questionnaire and responding on their interviews. They will also set the dates of interview according to the respondent’s availability. After this data gathering, they will analyse and interpret the data they collected.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The study will focus on the wives of the seafarers. The researchers will find out if the spouses are able to do the role of being a good wife, their different strategies in handling their family solely, the advantages and disadvantages of being a seafarer’s wife and their ways on how to overcome their loneliness while their husbands are away. One convolution that the researchers met is that of having limited respondents for the reason that this is a case study which focuses on a restricted number of people involved. After the researchers deliberation who will be these wives, they come up with three respondents. These respondents are selected because of their time of availability, their willingness to share their experiences, the places where they live (which are quite close where we live in) et.al,. Another limitation of this study is that the output of the respondent depends on how they understand and answer the questions.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Lupe Presentation

...La Union Del Pueblo Entero also known as LUPE is a community-based union that serves the low-income neighborhoods of Hidalgo County through community organizing and social services. In 2003, LUPE was established in the Rio Grande Valley by Juanita Valdez-Cox who now is the executive director of the organization, and the speaker at a presentation held at South Texas College on November 11th 2015. This public presentation was open to the general public to raise awareness and educate people about the migrant workers who are often oppressed or forgotten down here in South Texas. Juanita Valdez-Cox elaborates on this in her speech; she talks about how she used to be a migrant worker, and how since LUPE they have been able to increase the benefits of the farmworkers, and are currently working towards installing streetlights in colonia communities. This presentation had many different strengths and weaknesses, Ms. Valdez-Cox is able to establish strong credibility with her own personal history, she is also able to effectively evoke emotion in others with her touching stories of those living in the colonias, but she uses faulty logic because all her numbers are exceedingly outdated. Juanita Valdez-Cox starts off with by introducing LUPE, she talks about who they are, how the organization works while also informing the audience about the many accomplishments LUPE has had since their founding in 1981. Throughout the presentation all of the victories, the main focus of the entire...

Chopper

...However, some people, like rapper Lupe Fiasco, manage to escape the ghetto and tell the truths of the inside. Lupe Fiasco is widely considered to be one of the best rappers when it comes to lyrical content. His subject matter is deeper than most rappers and he is very passionate when it comes to his music. Having escaped the ghetto, he is able to provide a first hand experience of what really goes on in the inside. This results in a unique situation because his music is essentially the meeting ground for two different cultures. Mary Louise Pratt, author of the essay, “Arts of the Contact Zone”, describes this meeting ground as a place where cultures “…meet, clash, and grapple with each other” (Pratt 501) or more simply put, a place she calls the contact zone. The contact zone consists of many elements and is most prominent in certain types of text. One particular text, an autoethnographic text, can be seen in some of Lupe Fiascos music. One specific example of this is a song by Lupe Fiasco titled “Chopper”. This song is such a good example of this particular text because he has both the perspective of the inside of the ghetto and the outside. He sees what other outsiders can see but wants them to know what is really happening on the inside. He is able to blend the two different cultures and wants to give the less dominant culture a voice and does so with this song. “Chopper” is a very unique piece of music. It comes from Lupe Fiascos newest album titled Testuo...

Hip-Hop Saved Me

...Mehtab S. Dhaliwal Georgia M. Roberts B CUSP 117D 03 March 2012 “…I feel like murder but hip-hop you saved me…” (Lupe Fiasco) But what is Hip Hop? No one really has a concrete classification for this term, though many have their own opinions on what the culture of Hip Hop is. Some view the culture of Hip Hop as a door into a different culture, something one has never experienced first hand. While others claim that “…hip hop is primarily responsible for every decline and crisis world-wide except the war in Iraq and global warming…” (Rose) because of the negative influences it has on many people. Numerous parents believe their children shouldn’t be listening to this type of music due to the explicit lyrics. There are countless opinions of what Hip Hop means, but no one really converses about one actual definition. To me, Hip Hop is a way for people to express their opinions and experiences within their music. Hip Hop is distorted throughout history. It originated in the streets of New York City during the late 60’s early 70’s, specifically in the Bronx. Back then it was just a style of poetry, like a type of freestyle that young black men performed. Quickly this style started to become popular and the black youth began “…engaging in verbal duels with contenders like a linguistic match…” (Gates). Due to the geographic location of this formation of Hip Hop, it is considered a “black art form”. Other ethnicities such as the Caribbean and Latin peoples probably had...

...The warm summer sun is baking my skin like bread, the cool ocean breeze is whipping my hair, and I am floating on the calm cool waves gliding to the mushy surface of the sand. I can feel the burning hot sand cooking my feet like steak to a medium rare. The sand feels like I am stepping in lava with every step comes more pain, which makes me yearn to get to the cool salty sensation of the ocean. I can feel shells piercing through my skin like sharp knives poised and glad to kill. Seeing the vicious, dirty, irritating seagulls scouting for food, hurtling to their target disrupting families’ enjoyable time. I can see little children’s smile brightening the day, as they build sand castles with blue and green buckets, adding all kinds of beautiful twisted unique shells, and adding a big red flag to the top with their families company. The sleepy ocean waves pulling back and pushing forward calmly as if it suddenly got tired of causing mishap, and knocking people their boards, but is now bored and at ease. The bright summer sun is burning my eyes out, melting everyone to a pile of goop. I can taste the nasty salty water stinging my mouth, making me want something strong enough to wash away the nasty taste of salt forever making it vanish. Tasting spicy yellow hot peppers scattered around my mouth with cold smoked turkey, green sweet peppers, scrumptious tomato, and white provolone cheese mixed together leaving me to savor the yummy taste of a Wawa sub. Then washing it down with...

...That day taught me a valuable lesson; even though my dog did achieve an obedience title he showed me there are greater things in life than getting that .Training your dog for the obedience ring is a lot of hard work. We trained for months working twice a day seven days a week. While we enjoyed training I wanted to earn that obedience title so bad I it was all I could think of for months. Uconn knew all the exercises he needed to perform inside and out, backwards and forwards. I went to the ring area with Uconn early in the morning. I wanted both of us to get accustom to the sights and sounds of where the obedience ring was set up. I had a book with me to try to so some reading to relax before we went in the ring. It was a warm August day. The building we were in was a pole building at the fairgrounds. It was damp and cool in the building and I wondered if the cool air was making me feel not so great. The obedience ring was set up with white gating all around it. It was a perfect square. The matting being used was rubber and a dark green color. We found a place in the last row. The area was crowded with spectators, other exhibitors and dogs. The judge was a woman. I had seen and shown other dogs under her in the past. She was very pleasant and smiled and welcomed us in her ring. For one thing the dog is very unpredictable. It takes a lot of hard work and patience to get your dog trained. I was at an obedience trial with Uconn. There was a little boy in a wheelchair...

Cool Christmas

...Just imagine waking up to the cool crisp summer air. You can hear the river flowing just a stone’s throw away. After you load up your gear you push off the bank. The river is so calm you cut through it like glass. Each stroke of the paddle has its own distinct noise. You are going so fast that the front of your canoe pushes up a wake. These are the moments that I live for, and experienced on my senior project trip this summer. My name is Brett Jobin and I am a senior at Roscommon High School. I am three sport athlete and live a very busy life. I’ve grown up in Roscommon so the outdoors is a part of me. I did not get into canoeing until my junior year. It started off with me and a couple of buddies just going a couple of hours at a time. I wanted more. When I was thinking about what to do for my senior project a light bulb turned on upstairs. Why not do something that I’ve always wanted to do? An overnight canoe trip would be perfect, but it was not that simple. How could I gain something from a canoe trip? After some thought I realized that I knew nothing about the world known river that flows right through my town. So, why not educate myself and other people at the same time. I picked my best friend John Miller to be my partner in crime on this adventure. We took a two day canoe trip to the Mio Dam. Along the way we met a lot of different people and saw a lot of different things. We visited the chapel and the castle, but my favorite thing was the Mason Tract. It is nothing but...

Personal Narrative

... I was suddenly woke up by the feeling of excitement running through my veins on that hot September morning. I couldn't wait till my boyfriend would get off work that evening and take me dove hunting. The excitement drove me crazy all day long as I tried doing things to keep myself occupied. To pass time I gathered up all my favorite camouflage attire along with my brown leather boots. I walked out to my daddy's shop where I was lead to the gun cabinet. And there sat my very own pink Remington 870 12 gauge. The gun was my first and carries so many days of happy memories from my childhood. I'm sure it will be put back in this cabinet tonight with another day of happiness and memories. As five o'clock rolled around I got the 12 gauge cleaned up and loaded with the right amount of bullets. I then stepped into my camouflage pants, slid my shirt over the top of my head sliding each arm into the sleeves, and I was ready to go. I pulled my ole dirty ball cap down over my brown eyes, and laced up my leather boots. Soon enough, I was pulling into Tyler's driveway. I jumped out, and ran inside yelling at him to hurry the heck up! He smiled, shaking his head as he swept me off my feet and carried me to his truck. I was thrown in and the door slammed behind me. Vrooom, Vroom his old white truck started right up! And on our way we were to the hunting land! As we flew down the old curvy back roads the bed of his truck went Clunk! Clunk! Clunk! Every time we hit...

Island of Splendor

...Island of Splendor The sun sets slowly across the water, as the horizon closes with red and yellow skies. Waves crash against the cliff of Black Rock for a never ending time. You hear the tropical birds sing their night time melody while crickets play their solos to spice up the evening. Fishing boats are tied to broken docks as dolphins play in the crystal clear water. Another day has washed forever away but another night sets touching the sandy shores of the Island of Maui. A place filled with fun, luxury, and excitement, Maui would be considered a tropical paradise to many people. While gazing out among the vast ocean ahead, the sparkly, bright blue water of the new day appears to be never ending. The open water’s foamy fingers cradle the other islands as speed boats and sail boats jump the waves, passing the misty puffs of air emitted from the whales swimming by. On the shore, the fresh, salty air sweeps past your face, as if a fan was turned on and off repeatedly right next to you. A mix of coconut and seaweed permeate the air, giving it a sense of figure, so strong it can almost be eaten. The cool, crisp air perfectly carries the sound of the crashing waves, as the tide carries them in and out. From the bird’s perspective, people laughing and gentle music on the boardwalk provide a comfortable home. The cool water and warm sands offer a nice break from the humid day, brings relaxation to anybody who enters this paradise. In addition to the ocean, the vibrant green...

Vocabulary Story

...C.V. Short Story #` The beneficent old man walked through the soothing sand in the coastal beach near his home. While the cool sand caressed his feet, his mind wandered thinking back to his anything but chaste life. Growing up, he had one particularity which was his best friend. Some called the particularity prescience. Others called it an oracular particularity. He preferred to call it sagacity. When he was a young man, he won a bounty for finding a lost child by using his particularity. He was always compassionate toward others. This caused him to use his money to become a philanthropist. With great promptitude, he walked into meetings with several charities in order to donate. He felt great about the fact he was able to succor so many different organizations. He had never done anything with such alacrity in his life! He ameliorated plenty of lives, which is something he felt proud of. All of the charities treated him with great civility. After people around town heard what had gone on in his life, they began to treat him politically. People, who weren’t responsive before, became, and the young man didn’t appreciate that. But since he always had great rectitude, he treated everyone the way they treated him. Most people did not act prudently, for they were only interested in his money. What they didn’t know is that the young man was frugal in his financial matters. All he ever bought for himself was a scintillating vase. Other than that, he was always proffering to people...

Walking down the long, gravel road home after school grew on me nostalgically as I had did it so many times before. The sight of leafs and semi cold weather was a perfect sign that Halloween was right around the corner. As any other kid I was piqued with excitement and wonder to what costume I would wear that Halloween. Less than a week away to Halloween I had gotten severely sick. “But mom i'm fine enough to go walking down the street for peats sake!,” I said trying to hide my fatigue. “You’re too sick to go walking in the cold like this hun,” she replied optimistically. My Ideal House

However there is no harm in dreaming, especially if the dream provides the driving force to turn fantasy into fact. As I live in Singapore, i would like my ideal house to be situated either on one of the residential estates, right outside the bustle of the city center, or on one of the coast roads so that the cool breezes from the ever beautiful China sea could waft through my windows. Wherever my house was, it would stand in it sown grounds so that I would not, on any side, be over-looked by neighbors. The gardens, with which it would be surrounded would be very beautiful, full of colorful tropical flowers; orchids and canna lilies and with many glowing flowering shrubs such as bougainvillaea and frangipani. There would be tall leafy trees for shade and underneath them, my private swimming bath would be built, where we could relax and swim in the heat of the day. there would be pleasant paths winding through the green grass and comfortable seats where my family and I could rest, when the day's toil was over. The house itself would be built of white stone which is both cool and weather-proof. It would be on two storeys, because I like the habit of sleeping upstairs. It would embody features from both the Eastern and Western worlds. In front of it, I would have a large path with...

My Slave Story

...My Slave Story Even after these years of freedom I can still remember my life as a slave. At night the pictures, sights, sounds of ruthless slavery. I am Nkakawak. I was 12 years old when I was taken from my village. I never got to say good bye to my family that day. I had been playing with my sister. She got away, we were playing hide and seek. I was hiding behind a row of small bushes, when two men and a woman grabbed me. I’ve never seen any of my family since. That day I walked for miles, my feet bled and blistered, but I was forced to walk on. I collapsed with dehydration, but they whipped my back till I got up. My face and throat stung from crying and screaming for my family, but they would whip me till I stopped. We walked for days and days, I thought I was hallucinating when I saw the coast. The cool sea breeze refreshed me, but not for long. I was stuffed onto a sweaty boat, they’re must have been 200 hundred of us crammed onto a boat that was built for just 50. I was held under deck with the rest of us. Iron shackles and course rope detained us. We were treated like animals, probably worse. Most were too ill to cry or talk. I watched dozens die, from lack of nourishment, exhaustion, a broken heart. Their bodies were thrown overboard and if you protested with the overseers you’d be thrown over too. Many tried to commit suicide, I don’t blame them, my mind had thought the same thing, but I wasn’t going to let them make me like them. There were no toilets so the floor...
