Before I get into the meat and the potatoes of the paper that’s talking about IKEA, I would like to talk about and define the value proposition and its purpose for a company. The value proposition is basically, something that is stated or promised that is going benefit your customers. The value proposition helps you with three main points. The first point is that it helps recognize the product roadmap which, will help identify anything that needs to be let go that’s not going to help contribute to the value proposition. The next point of value proposition it helps promote and sell of whatever product you have. Also, it is the opening to your customer pitch. The last in final point is that it also lets you know the higher prices. Sometimes the value can be unclear of the product, and the customer is thinking in terms of cost based prices. That going into how long did it take it to build, how much did the materials cost. Value based pricing is about revenue increase and money savings. If you want to have high profit margins, use prices based on value. In 2009 Nortel networks had to file for bankruptcy. Nortel’s bankruptcy is considered one of Canada’s largest bankruptcy cases in Canadian history (The Canadian Press 2014). In 2007 the Securities Exchange Commission files a lawsuit against Nortel for accounting fraud. Nortel was accused of not following the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. The two main principles that Nortel executives were accused of were going against the revenue recognition principle and the provisions principles. Nortel broke the revenue recognition principle for the sole purpose of meeting budgeted sales and revenues (Cullen 2007). What Nortel would do was to not recognize expenses right away and to recognize unearned revenue (Cullen 2007). The reason for breaking these rules was to magnify their revenue and profits. Nortel broke the provisions principle by recognizing their expenses later on causing profits to increase (Cullen 2007).
