Thank You Ma'Am - Analytical Essay

...Analytical essay of Thank You M’am The short story “Thank You M’am” is written by the famous black writer Langston Hughes. This fictional text is about the teenager Roger, who tries to steal the purse of the large woman Mrs. Luella Bates Washington, who instead of reporting the boy to the police or run frightened away chooses to learn him an alternative lesson, by taking him to her house and wash his face. There is no place in the text that tells where the story takes place, but it is most likely that the location is somewhere in the United States, as Langston Hughes is American. The action in the story is in the street, where the boy and the woman meet, and in the woman’s house. The time of the story is probably around the 1950’s, as it is within the living period of Langston Hughes, but also the character Mrs. Washington works in a beauty shop (p. 3, l. 41), which was not a very common thing before the 50’s. There is no indications in the text that tell anything specific about the social environment, but as the boy, Roger tries to steal from Mrs. Washington, he is in all probability poor, and Mrs. Washington is probably from the middle class, as she has a house. In the story we meet two persons: The teenager boy, Roger and the woman, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington. Roger is around fourteen or fifteen years old, wearing blue jeans and tennis shoes, and he was also looking frail (p. 1, ll. 35-36). It is possible that he does not have any one to take care of him, but it is also...

...To our beloved principal Madam Lolita M. Arciaga, to the administrative officer Madam Zenaida Batingana and the faculty; my fellow graduates, parents and guardians, honored guests, ladies and gentlemen, good morning. Class 2011 today is a turning point of our lives. We have spent the past four years in searching the halls of this great school, Doña Carmen Denia National High School, and now we are gathered here to be rewarded; to reap the fruits of our labor and to claim the merits for our endeavors. When we first entered the portals of our dear Alma Mater, we were filled with hopes and dreams. We hope to satisfy our parents with good grades. We hope to excel in the class. We struggled to be on top. Thus, we must be proud for ourselves. We should be honored for we surpassed and conquered the challenges in high school. We should be happy because we survived. For four years we learned, laughed, cried, and most of all matured together. However, today doesn’t just about reminiscing the past, it’s about looking forward to the future. Life is a sequence of passageways. We are leaving one and move to the next. When we reach college we will start over another journey. We will meet new people, make new friendship and learn new things. We will grow older, more mature, more responsible and independent. After that, we are left to pass through the unmapped area and that is our future. As I gaze over the many faces I witness today, discernment of individuals are washed away. I...

Comparing Indian Education 'And Thank You Ma' Am, By Langston Hughes

...situations. However, what do they all have in common? They live in short stories. Two short stories that are interesting are "Indian Education" by Sherman Alexie and "Thank you Ma'am" by Langston Hughes. "Indian Education" is about a boy who learned a lot from everything that happened in his life. "Thank you Ma'am" is about a boy who makes a mistake and in the end he learns from it. While there are some obvious similarities, both authors approach these stories, specifically the characters, tone and point of view, in different ways. The main characters of both stories are similar because they both brave. When the Indian boy was in the first grade, he punched a kid in the face for being mean to him. "Held his head against the snow, and punched him." The Indian boy was only in the first grade and he punched someone. He was standing up for himself. Also, when the Indian boy was in the fifth grade, he started playing basketball. "I picked up the basketball for the first...

Similarities and Differences in 2 Stories

...English 21 Topic #1 The adult and child relationship between the story “A Mother in Mannville” and the story “Thank You Ma’am” is that both characters in both stories have build an unexpected relationship that brings two strangers close. Both stories have their differences and similarities that will make both stories very interesting. Overall I think “A Mother in Mannville” ended in a sad way, therefore I don’t think it has a successful ending. In “Thank You Ma’am” the ending was satisfying; therefore I think it was a successful story. In a “Mother in Mannville” and the story “Thank You Ma’am” both characters build a unexpected relationship that brings the characters close. In “A Mother in Mannville” the man who hires Jerry notices something special about the boy. “Integrity, The word means something special to me , and the quality for which I use it is a rare on.” The man sees’ how gracious and kindhearted the little boy is. “He was standing back of his own carelessness. He was a free will agent and he choose to do careful work, and if he failed he took responsibility without subterfuge” In the story the author mentions how spending time with his dog got the man and Jerry closer. “It seems to me that being with my dog & caring for him, had brought the boy and too, together, so that he felt that he belonged to me as well as to the animal.” I think the fact that Jerry tells the man that he has a mother in Mannville makes him fill confused & sympathy...

Lopez OJT Coordinator Submitted by: Johara C. Bayabao Student Trainee May 2013 Introduction On-the-Job-Training or OJT is job training that occurs in the work place. It is part of a college curriculum that aims to train and orient students about the work and their future career. It is very important not only to teach students their chosen career but to show students the reality about working. Students should not take OJT for granted because if you will get a high evaluation grade, your employer might hire you when you graduate. Your background OJT is very important when applying for a job. Oftentimes, employers will ask you the relevance of your training to your course and to the position you are applying for. ...OUTREACH ACTIVITIES June 13 (NSTP classroom) The class was held in room EN 500 and was headed by professor Ma’am Perla F. Miranda. New faces, new friends, new environment. At first, I was hesitant to be in this class because I thought that I won’t feel the belongingness I yearn for in a group. But it turns out that I have enjoyed the company of my professor and some of my block mates. We were instructed to make ourselves known in front of the class and were tasked to memorize at least 20 names of our block mates. It was very exciting for me because I were able to know the names of these people in my class and they were able to know my name. It was a great day because I get to bond with some of them even if it’s just for a little time. June 20 (NSTP classroom) NSTP Core Values: Maka-Diyos, Makakalikasan, Makabayan, Makatao. These core values taught in STC 111 were reviewed and role played by us. The class was divided into four groups and each group was assigned to present their understandings on the assigned core value by role playing which was graded by the other group. We were third to present and impart our own ideas in front of the class about makabayan. Somehow the performance was not quite good enough for the other group so we were graded 8/10. Although we were also given the lowest grade, I’m glad that my group was very cooperative in a way that we all enjoyed doing it. Ma’am Miranda then explained, gave examples to each of the core values, and summarized all of the discussion...

...Dear ma’am, I am fully sensible to the greatness of being able to do as one wishes to do any where they’d like, something that not all of us get to do, something that seems prejudice against others you do not approve of. I guess it is safe to say that we, those not of your liking, would not be able to act or do as we wishes within your line of view in this small place and feel not liked. Ma’am, I understand that to those you like so well you treat with a kind manner and let them get away with really stupid things. But it is to my understanding that a woman of your status, is being taken advantage of for not enforcing such simple things while we, not once have we done something remotely wrong or taken advantage of the situation. Ma’am, I truly believe in the need to change your ways and your rules and let all the real hard working people get the right to do anything we wish within your range of view. Also allow me to remind you that, I understand that you once felt very similar to what we feel now on your way to the top, to where you are today, when they wouldn’t let you, a very hard working woman, have the right to proceed to complete her dream and be who she wanted to be. Ma’am, I understand that you, yourself always said everyone was equal in this range of work yet time and time again I fail to see how we all treated equal with the same amount of rights and respect. I suppose the severity of this issue within work is too much for you to fully understand and understand...
