Before she inherited the name that would be well known along with her business, Walker was born Sarah Breedlove to Minerva and Owen Breedlove who were recently freed sharecroppers. In 1874, her mother passed away and her father passed the following year making Sarah an orphan age seven; Sarah went to live with her sister, Louvenia, and brother-in-law, but in 1877, the three moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi where she picked cotton and was most likely employed doing housework.
Eventually, when Breedlove was 14, she married a man named a Moses to escape from her oppressive working environment and the frequent mistreatment from her brother-in-law. When Sarah was 18, she gave birth to her daughter, A’Leila, but two years later, her husband, Moses, died. Effectiveness of Wood Vinegar (Pyroligneous Acid) Against Fusarium Proliferatum

...INTRODUCTION Rationale of the Study Fusarium proliferatum is known as the conidial stage of Giberellafujikuroi, which is an ascomycetous seed-borne fungus that causes bakanae, a disease that influences rice (Nelson, 1994). There are over 100 species of the genus, Fusarium, and they are most common in tropical and subtropical areas. The presence of pathogenic conidia may cause the discoloration in kernels. F. proliferatum is a filamentous fungus or mould found in aerobiologic surveys worldwide. It is a major parasite of rice, sugar cane, sorghum, bean, soybean, and is especially common on maize grains (Pitt, et al. 1994). According to (De Leon and Pandey 1989; King and Scott 1981; Ochor et al. 1987), F. proliferatum causes a disease called Fusarium kernel rot. In parts of the USA and lowlands tropics, this is one of the most important ear diseases and is associated with warm, dry years and insect damaged fields. Czembor, et al. (2015) stated that maize is one of the most important crops in Poland. Diseases caused by Fusarium spp. can affect the yield and grain quality of maize because of contamination with numerous mycotoxins produced by these fungi. Similar results were obtained from 148 samples of maize from the Philippines, and 82 samples of maize from Indonesia. F. proliferatum persisted in high numbers in stored maize from the both countries (Pitt, et al.,1993). (Zainudinet al., 2008b; NurIzzati and Salleh, 2009), stated that F. proliferatum have been isolated...

Mr. Peter Williams

...CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background Information The Cross River gorilla, Gorilla gorilla diehli (Matschie, 1904), a subspecies of the western gorilla, Gorilla gorilla, is found in contiguous forest patches bordering South-Southern Nigeria and South-Western Cameroon, an area recognized as a biodiversity hotspot characterized by species diversity and endemism (Edet, 2011). The subspecies is one of the most critically endangered primates of Africa (Oates et al., 2008; IUCN, 2013). The subspecies is also one of the world’s 25 most endangered primates (Mittermeier et al., 2009). As humans extend their land use, Cross River gorilla habitat is rapidly disappearing, and this may have adverse effects on number of individuals within the subspecies. The Cross River gorilla, Gorilla gorilla diehli, chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes vellorosus) and drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus), though legally protected by the Endangered Species Decree 11 of 1985, are some of the primates hunted for bushmeat and other purposes (Edet, 2011). The Major threat to the survival of the subspecies is lack of thorough conservation strategy necessary for its protection. The survival of this endangered species and ecosystems depends on long-term participation and understanding of local populations (Oates, 1999). Due to the close relationship between cultural diversity and biodiversity, traditional knowledge systems play an important role when developing species conservation and management strategies (Caldecott...

Building Services Engineers Perceptions of Climate Change:

... This research assessed the local building services engineers’ general perceptions of climate change. The participants’ (1) opinion and knowledge on “global climate change”, “climate change in Hong Kong” and “building services engineering in Hong Kong” and (2) their perceptions towards the perceptions and actions from different groups were measured. In summary, no respondent disagreed with the occurrence of the global climate change but they appeared to be generally not showing strong feelings or opinions towards the climate change issues and their perceptions on different bodies. They may have limited knowledge about the Kyoto Protocol. Developers in Hong Kong were perceived to be the party which did not perceive climate change as a problem and did not take action to mitigate the impacts brought by climate change. Lastly respondents showed different points of view on whether building services engineering has an adverse impact on climate change. Some might be focusing on the actual impact while some might thought the engineers were mitigating the impact on climate change. DECLARATION I declare that this dissertation represents my own work, except where due acknowledgement is made, and that it has not been previously included in a thesis, dissertation or report submitted to the University of Hong Kong or to any other institution for a degree, diploma or other qualifications.
