Without martyrs, like Stephen, the Church would not be where is is today, we might not even have a Church. The martyrs are an important part of the Church, their ultimate sacrifice proved they were serious about their faith and showed non believers how real the religion was. Catholics give their lives today in many different ways. Some people completely devote their life to God and become a nun, priest, or monk. Others give their life by giving up their time to help their Church community and the needy in it.
5. The Canonization of Saint Teresa of Calcutta:

The bishop has to start the “investigation” and further review by Congregation for the Cause of Saints and the person is declared “Venerable”. Next, God has to preform a miracle through the person, the Church declares the person “Blessed”. With another miracle the Pope “raises the person to the altar” and declares the person a saint.
Pope Francis declared that Mother Teresa ‘deserved’ to be canonized. Francis recognized a second miracle in which she was credited with the healing of a man with multiple brain tumors. Early Education in Calamba and Biñan Summary

...Chapter 2 Childhood Years in Calamba Rizal's childhood was the happiest period of his life. Calamba, the hero's hometown, belonged to the Dominican Order. A few kilometers south of Calamba lies mount Makiling. East of the town is Laguna de Bay. Rizal was a student in the Ateneo de Manila in 1876 when he was 15 years old. When he was fifteen, he wrote the poem entitled In Memory of My Town (Un Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo) Rizal was sickly, underweight, undersized, and frail as a child. He had his own nipa cottage where he played in the day, built by his father. He had an aya (nurse maid) who has a kind old woman and who took care of him and his health. He began birdwatching at the age of 3, observing the culiauan, the maya, the maria capra, the martin, and the pipit. He recited the Angelus prayer daily. Of all his sisters, Jose loved little Concepcion best. She was only a year younger than him, and fell ill and died at the age of 3. The death of his sister was Jose's first grief. Jose and his father went on a pilgrimage to Antipolo on June 6, 1868 so that they could fulfill his mother's vow, which she made when Jose was born. Teodora could not join them on this pilgrimage because she had given birth to Jose's sister Trinidad. After the pilgrimage, Jose went with his father to Manila where they visited his sister Saturnina, who was then a boarding student at La Concordia College in Santa Ana. On "The Story of the Moth," Rizal thought that the creature's death was justified...

...Early Education Rizal’s first teacher was his mother, Teodora Alonso. As a tutor, Doña Teodora discovered that her son had a creative and in-depth talent for poetry so she encouraged him to write poems to reduce the monotony of memorizing the ABC’s and to stimulate her son’s imagination. As Rizal grew older, his parents employed private tutors. His first private tutor was Maestro Celestino, followed by Maestro Lucas Padua and later, an old man named Leon Monroy. Monroy lived at the Rizal residence and instructed Jose in Spanish and Latin. Unfortunately, after 5 months of teaching, he passed away. After Monroy’s death, Rizal’s parents decided to send him to a private school in Biñan. Life and Studies in Ateneo (1872-1877) In 1865, college began to function in the Philippines when the Jesuits returned. Jesuits were considered as the best educators in Spain, and perhaps in Europe. So they established an institution called the Ateneo de Municipal. The Instruction of Jesuitical system was considered advanced. Their methods were less mechanical and rigid in discipline. Jesuits introduced physical culture as well as art cultivation, such as music, drawing, and painting. Agriculture, commerce, and mechanics were part of their vocational courses. Being a religious institution, Ateneo’s principal purpose was to mold character. Rizal entered Ateneo de Municipal in 1872. He describe his first professor, Fr. Jose Bech as a “man of high stature; lean body, bent forward; quick...

Business Ethics

...Chapter 5 Socially Responsible Business – Doing the Right Thing By Lizabeth England Businesses have an ethical responsibility to customers who buy goods and services from them. Socially responsible business means that companies do the right thing for their customers. Companies consider profit, consumer satisfaction, and societal well being as equally important in the way business is conducted. Governments often enact laws that force businesses to function ethically. Consumers also can force businesses to act ethically regarding their purchases. For example, in the United States today, consumers and consumer activists boycott over 800 products. This chapter is on socially responsible business. Teachers and students want to know about ways in which businesses are held accountable to customers for goods and services that they sell. According to consumer rights laws, people who buy goods and services have four rights: the right to be safe, the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to be heard. This chapter will provide teachers and students with opportunities to learn more about socially responsible business and about doing the right thing. In the United States, businesses are often judged by their socially responsible behaviors. Most people agree that these include the following specific elements: equal employment opportunity for all citizens regardless of their race, religion or sex; respect for employees’ diversity, safety, and health in the workplace;...

...A Study of Middle Grades Students’ Reading Interests, Habits, and Achievement Nichole Lynnette Smith A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Education in the School of Education. Chapel Hill 2009 Approved By: Dr. Barbara Day Dr. Frank Brown Dr. Sandra Hughes-Hassell Dr. Teresa Petty Dr. Xue Lan Rong i © 2009 Nichole Lynnette Smith ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Nichole Lynnette Smith: A Study of Middle Grades Students’ Reading Interests, Habits, and Achievement (Under the direction of Dr. Barbara Day, Advisor) Reading has become an area of concern among the American culture in the past decade. The amount of time the American public spends reading is declining quickly, and its most frequent drop has been among its youngest readers, elementary school students (National Endowment for the Arts, 2004). McKool’s (2007) research has found that there is a “strong relationship between the amount of out-of-school reading a student engages in and his or her success in school” (p. 111). It has also been found that students’ academic levels do not remain the same with no growth, but their academic levels actually drop if they do not read in their free time (Hughes- Hassell & Lutz, 2006). The current literature focuses on younger students, especially those in elementary school. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential differences of what influences...
