College Admissions Essay: What Makes You Different?

...“What makes you different?” “What makes you stand out in a crowd?” “What makes you different from the other applicants?” This question has been the bane of my existence. I keep getting asked this question and it took a while to figure out the answer within myself. I was adopted from South Korea and grew up in a small, rural, northern New Jersey community. I didn’t learn I was different right away. My awareness began later. Middle school was hard and I remember wishing that I was like everybody else. Being Asian in a primarily white populated community was not an issue until other kids in my class pointed it out. It’s hard to describe how that feels. Humiliating. Embarrassing. Some days I would wish that I was just somewhere else. I struggled in my early teen years, not accepting who I was, becoming closed off, pulling away from my friends and family, and most of all, hating myself. I know it’s not something you can change, but my middle school self didn’t exactly grasp this concept. The constant ridiculing, whether it was to my face or in my imagination, made...

What Makes Us so Different? Understanding Political Ideology Through Partisanship

...Govt-2301-WS3 What makes us so different? Understanding Political Ideology through Partisanship People today think that it doesn’t matter how you vote, the outcome will always be the same because the Democratic and GOP parties are run by corporations. Some think that in order to break away from the special interests and influences, there should be a strong third party and that party with a different platform is the Libertarian Party. Historically the main two parties were not much different. In the beginning both parties believed that “men (not big government) was to rule them” (The Fundamental Differences Between Republican and Democrats). There was a mutual desire for individual freedom. Currently it seems that their fundamental beliefs have changed. The Democratic Party wants to increase government involvement in the lives of the American public, whereas the Republicans would like to see decreased national government and have each state govern themselves (The Fundamental Differences Between Republican and Democrats). The Libertarians seem to want to get back to what the founding fathers envisioned. Each party has very strong convictions on the topics that confront America today. The hottest topic facing the nation is Same Sex Marriage. Since the beginning the Democrats have defended Civil Rights and supported the expansion of opportunities for all. They fight to end all forms of discrimination, but this is an uphill battle. “We support marriage equality...

...Discuss several areas in which HR can affect organizational culture positively or negatively. HR affects organizational culture by developing and implementing different policies and procedures in areas like, hiring practices, management relations, compensation, and employee conduct and behavior. When the HR departments make decisions they can have a significant positive and negative implication for the cultural quality of the organization. As company executives move up the ladder in the organization they get farther away from the “front lines” they don’t have a strong understanding of the culture. It is up to the HR department to educate the top on what is going on with the culture, so that there is a better understanding. Developing compensation is both a positive and can be a negative to an organization. This is because, the incentive program for sales staff can provide an opportunity to increase their compensation when there is greater productivity. The down side is the sales staff is competing with each other and could lead to deterioration of the team and lower morale. When hiring if the HR department doesn’t pay close attention to the characteristics of the employee they may be hiring an employee that won’t fit in with the corporate culture. To ensure proper behavior the HR department must develop a code of conduct. If a code of conduct isn’t strong or if there isn’t one at all employees will see it as given lip service by human resources could lead to a culture of...

Unit 3 Branding Methods

...Task 1 (U3 P1) In the assignment I am going to describe how marketing techniques such as branding, relationship marketing and growth matrix are being used by Kellogg’s and diesel. There are so many different types of methods that are being used in marketing to make your business becoming more successful. The first one is branding, branding is a very important part of marketing because this tells the consumers who owns what and helps them to identify which one they want and which one is better, most of the brands will have certain things which makes them noticeable, it could be anything like Logo, design or the slogan. For example if there is a giant K on the cereals then most of the people will know its Kellogg’s special. Kellogg’s and diesel takes branding very seriously because branding sometimes can be the importance between the successes of the business or not. Out of the two companies I think Kellogg’s take’s branding much more important than diesel because consumers recognise Kellogg’s by their logo most of the times for example when you go shopping in the supermarket for some cereals and the ones with the colour and the way it’s written on the box you will know that it’s Kellogg’s, they designed their logo very simple and eye catching. On the other hand diesel also focus on brand just as much as Kellogg’s consumers will know it’s diesel when they see it because it very noticeable they use red back ground with white letters is not very creativity because they just use...

Stumbling Upon Happiness

...would be hitting print as we speak. Unfortunately it is not that simple to slap a universal definition to this word, or any word rather. The author of Stumbling on Happiness, Daniel Gilbert, attempts to define the word. With several factors being put into play such as the measuring of happiness, different memories and different feelings can vary Gilbert’s definition from mine. Writing a book with 263 pages based on the topic of happiness, Gilbert shows us his own definition of the word relatively early, “Happiness, then, is the you-know-what-I-mean feeling” (35). Do I even have to explain his quote? Because according to Gilbert we already “know what he means”. On the serious note, Gilbert is trying to make a point that it is extremely difficult to describe this word. He goes on to say that if we were to try and describe this word, we would most likely ditch the idea of using a definition and try and describe it by pointing out examples of what makes us happy. Well then if you go down that route, you are already looking at millions of different possibilities of what makes people happy. You can see why it is so difficult for Gilbert because everyone in this world is made completely different from one another. Their own definition of happiness or feeling of happiness can range from person to person. The struggle begins when everyone has their own definition of happiness. The result of them having their own definition of this word occurs since everyone has their own unique life...
