Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to determine whether or not the following variables affected an individual’s cooking frequency. (Age, Gender, Employment status)
Methods: There were simple surveys administered to some Madison County residents of all age groups and socioeconomic status. Once the information was obtained, the data collected was analyzed to determine the association, if any, between age and cooking frequency, gender and cooking frequency, and employment status and cooking frequency.
Results: 1 Do women cook more than men? The calculated p-value was 0.47 with an alpha value of .05. Because the p-value was greater than .05 it was safe to say that women cook more than men in the population studied.
2 Is there an association between age and cooking frequency? Here linear regression was used to determine the association between age and cooking frequency. There was a positive correlation shown from the scatterplot that was created. We found that as age increased so did the cooking frequency.
3 Does working full-time effect how often one cooks? This study compared cooking frequency in full-time and unemployed individuals. A two sample t-test was used to compare the two. These were the results from the t-test: -2.12<-0.741<2.12 ( t Stat, -t Critical two tail, and t Critical two tail respectively). There was no significant difference in the means (4.36-3.78), which shows that the null hypothesis that unemployed individuals cook more than full-time workers is true.
Slightly different results may be obtained with a larger sample. We could better determine how true the results I obtained were. A few things that caused the data to be a bit skewed were the fact that there were more females in the study and there were also more individuals in their twenties in this study. If further research were done, I think there should be an equal number
