Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Awards
Motorola
Under the seven key areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; workforce focus; operations focus; and results, Motorola qualified for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Awards. In 1988 the company was recognized for outstanding success in these areas. After nearly one thousand hours of review and site visits, the company displayed a strong sense of management and operational skills as well as a particular feel for training and development.
Atop the list of managerial methods at Motorola is their use of Six Sigma in order to measure the amount of defects in a batch of product and hopefully reduce that number. Operating under the Six Sigma Quality requires the company to produce variation while maintaining consistency. A more noticeable quality of Motorola in the eyes of the public would be the company’s ability to reduce cycle time and by doing so, the time from which an order is received to when it is delivered can be shortened to the direction of maximum efficiency. Before Motorola conceives these types of ideas, top-level management meetings are held to discuss and review quality programs such as these. Not only are all levels of the company involved, the Participative Management Program (PMP) bonuses account for 3% of Motorola’s payroll. In order to obtain employees capable of upholding such responsibility, Motorola has created its own training center that devotes 40% of worker education to specific quality matters. The knowledge being passed on to the employees are a result of Motorola understanding what is needed in order to compete with rivals in the market. Analyzing competitor’s methods help assure that Motorola ranks number one in the products they manufacture.
