Published on August 17, 1998 by Malcolm Gladwell, “Do Parents Matter?” describes how Judith Rich Harris created her own theory for child development. Gladwell describes her as sickly women that isn’t able to leave the house for long periods of time, so she therefore works at home by writing psychology textbooks (1). It was noted by Gladwell that Harris had read a text by a psychologist that suggested child delinquency occurs because of children wanting to mock the actions of adults (1). While reading, she had a revelation as Gladwell states, “But Harris was suddenly convinced that the paper had it backward. ‘Adolescents aren’t trying to be like adults-they are trying to contrast themselves with adults,’…” (1). Harris’ theory is that children …show more content…
Once she had researched for six months, Harris submitted an article of her theory to a top journal named the Psychological Review (Gladwell 2). Gladwell stated that even though she lacked a Ph.Ds., her draft was accepted and published (2). Even though her health was very low, Harris began to write a book, “The Nurture Assumption”, that consisted of several points to support her theory (Gladwell 2). “Nurture assumption”, according to Harris, is a bias toward parents in human development, and she believes that the world has accepted this concept even though it doesn’t have a role in human development (Gladwell 4). The “nurture assumption” states that children who are shown more love will be kind, while children who are mistreated will not be as nice of kids (Gladwell 4). Gladwell states that Harris believes this to be false and thinks that how parents treat their kids is not the big factor (4). She believes that since fifty percent of personality comes from the parents, children are kind because of the genes that are passed down (Gladwell

Skills

...BT Personal Skills Journey Key skills training for young adults www.bt.com/personalskillsjourney Foreword The BT Learning and Skills Programme is passionate in its promotion of the key role communication skills play in our lives. We recognise that in this increasingly competitive world, we need to equip our young people with an understanding of the basics in life as early as we can, as businesses both large and small cannot afford to recruit staff who are unprepared for their start in the world of work. The lessons contained in this publication can be supplemented with many of the free resources available from our Learning and Skills website at www.bt.com/freeresources 02 Personal Skills Journey Foreword Welcome to your Personal Skills Journey Workbook! You will use this workbook as a journal throughout the year to evaluate and record your personal skills journey. These skills are SOFT skills – this means that there is no one test that will demonstrate if you have them or not. Assessing your personal skills is different to assessing your verbal or numerical skills or your ability in science – there are no right and wrong answers so soft skills are harder to measure. Some people will be very good in one area and need to improve in other areas. The aim of this workbook is to help you decide what skills are your strengths (what you are good at) or your weaknesses – the skills that you will need to practice in order to become better at them...

...MORE ADVANCE NOISE FOR QUIET “An intriguing and potentially lifealtering examination of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Gentle is powerful … Solitude is socially productive … These important counterintuitive ideas are among the many reasons to take Quiet to a quiet corner and absorb its brilliant, thought-provoking message.” —ROSABETH MOSS KANTER, professor at Harvard Business School, author of Confidence and SuperCorp “An informative, well-researched book on the power of quietness and the 3/929 virtues of having a rich inner life. It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. Blink - the Power of Thinking Without Thinking

...ALSO BY MALCOLM GLADWELL The Tipping Point To my parents, Joyce and Graham Gladwell Introduction The Statue That Didn’t Look Right In September of 1983, an art dealer by the name of Gianfranco Becchina approached the J. Paul Getty Museum in California. He had in his possession, he said, a marble statue dating from the sixth century BC. It was what is known as a kouros—a sculpture of a nude male youth standing with his left leg forward and his arms at his sides. There are only about two hundred kouroi in existence, and most have been recovered badly damaged or in fragments from grave sites or archeological digs. But this one was almost perfectly preserved. It stood close to seven feet tall. It had a kind of light-colored glow that set it apart from other ancient works. It was an extraordinary find. Becchina’s asking price was just under $10 million. The Getty moved cautiously. It took the kouros on loan and began a thorough investigation. Was the statue consistent with other known kouroi? The answer appeared to be yes. The style of the sculpture seemed reminiscent of the Anavyssos kouros in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, meaning that it seemed to fit with a particular time and place. Where and when had the statue been found? No one knew precisely, but Becchina gave the Getty’s legal department a sheaf of documents relating to its more recent history. The kouros, the records stated, had been in the private collection of a Swiss physician named Lauffenberger...

...characteristics: It is unpre dictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9 / 1 1 . For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. A BLACK SWAN Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate oppor tunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the "impossible." For years, Taleb has studied how we fool our selves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. Now, in this reve latory book, Taleb explains everything we know about what we don't know. He offers surprisingly simple tricks for dealing with black swans and ben efiting from them. Elegant, startling, and universal in its applica tions, The Black Swan will change the way you look at the...
