Everyone encounters emotional struggles throughout their day. They may not be as elaborate as the ones Tessie, Mary, and the Republican Sniper appropriate with but they still affect our life. Tessie, Mary, and the Republican Sniper face an inner struggle as a result of them being pitted against society which results in their defeat. These character's inner struggles will be shown and explained in this essay.

In Lamb To The Slaughter by Roald Dahl Mary Maloney is faced with an internal conflict. She is at war with herself when she finds out her happy home is not happy and about to disappear all together. The Sniper is faced with the emotional and mental struggle that he must overcome after he kills the enemy sniper. He gets uncomfortable seeing the enemy sniper fall down and feels deep guilt and remorse. "The sniper looked at his enemy falling and he shuddered. The lust of battle died in him. He became bitten by remorse." In the beginning of the battle his eyes had the cold gleam of the fanatic, they were deep and thoughtful. However, after he saw all the death, he lost his excitement, his emotion. "When the sniper reached the laneway on the street level, he felt a sudden curiosity as to the identity of the enemy sniper whom he had killed." After the death of the sniper he feels curious to find out who he had killed because they were a good shot, and he wanted to know if he knew them. "Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face." Once he makes it to the other side of the street he sees the face of his own brother in the enemy sniper and feels the ultimate conflict within himself for having murdered him.
