Man stealer is what the National Anti-Slavery Society called southerners that had authority over slaves in 1834. They argued that all slaves instantly be set free (Doc B). This is how hard anti-slavery groups fought for the rights of African Americans. But they were not the only ones fighting, Preston Brooks beat Charles Sumner with a cane after Charles gave a speech about the rights of African Americans. This attack was a sign from the southerners saying we will fight back (Doc C). So both northerners and southerners were up for a fight to get their way about slavery, but even though there were people ready to fight; many people wanted America to stick together and have both sides compromise and work it out. Lincoln got 1,866,452 popular votes winning it all (Doc H). This was the last straw for the south, they thought that Lincoln would end slavery and the South forgot all about compromise. Soon after Lincoln's congress made New Mexico and Utah a slave state with California the 16th free state in the Union. Other parts of the compromise included Texas losing some of its boundaries in New Mexico, but the worst part of the compromise: the Fugitive Slave Law. This law made it that any northerner that was suspicious that a African American could be a runaway slave must turn him or her into the authorities. Some north states wouldn’t even enforce the law, some states demanded that it was removed for it was too unfair. Many African Americans were captured and shipped back to the South convicted of being a runaway slave. One women killed her children so they wouldn’t have to do back to slavery. It was a terrible and challenging act the North had to deal with. Another big argument between the North and the South was when Dred Scott tried to sue his owner John F. A. Sandford for enslaving them while Dredd was in a free state, supreme court responded bitterly. They said that since Dred Scott was “property”, he could not sue Sandford and congress had no right to ban slavery in free states (Doc C). This was a win for the South, and they used their win to show the North that slavery was legal and the Supreme Court was on their side.
