Introduction Experiencing a steady growth, global toy industry has attracted many research in studying this field, in which one of the largest toy manufacturers Mattel Inc. suffered from a recall scandal in 2007. This essay directs at exploring reasons that lead to Mattel’s operation failure in this scandal regarding two key frameworks in global operation management, namely, supply chain management and quality management. Providing potential recommendations to prevent or react to supply chain failure as well. 1.1. U.S. toy industry According to Statista (2016), the U.S. toy industry amounted to $43.1 billion in 2015. It was projected to reach $45.02 billion by 2016. By means of global supply chains, U.S. enormous demand for toys is satisfied. For example, most toys sold in the U.S. are designed in the U.S., but approximately eighty percent of those sold in the U.S. are manufactured in China (Boyle, 2015). Roughly seventy percent of toy sales occur in the final three months of the year, in which families conduct bulk purchase as gifts to children for Christmas. Therefore, during early months of a year when demand for toys are considerably lower, toy manufacturers face problems with much of the unutilized capacity. They also need to appropriately...

Hsbc Operational Management Report

...multinational bank expanded and it opened other branches in several countries while offering financial and banking services. With its headquarters located in London, the bank is ranked as the fourth largest in the world. In Oman, however, the experienced problems within the bank are not what one would expect from a financial institution with such a reputation. Since its establishment in 1948, the bank has always offered top-notch services with fewer mistakes in Oman. Currently, there have been reports that the country is experiencing problems with their ATM machines. Customers are unable to use their ATM cards to access their accounts. The administrative sector is also having problems involving registration of clients to their newly introduced Advance Credit cards. The process has become strenuous for its customers. This study aims at identifying the problems and resolving it through operations management theories in gaining global competitiveness. According to the theories of operations management, organizations can solve their problems in three distinct ways. The six-sigma approach suggests identifying the defects and solving them afterwards. The lean approach, similarly advocates for the identification of defects though it focuses more on the wastes. After identification of such wastes, it is plausible to eliminate them. Contrary to that, the theory of constraints suggests that in every organizational structure, there is a limit. Identification of these constraints should be solved...

Management Report Report Coffe Mate

...Executive summary: Coffee-Mate is the market leader for coffee creamer in the UK market; it holds 55% of the market share. However, a high market penetration and a recent increase of Coffee-Mate’s competitors’ market share have led to a questioning on the brand’s future. Several tools are used to describe and precise the competitive environment of the brand. The BCG analysis of the brand’s product portfolio highlights two issues: • the uncertain future position of the current Star product: Coffee-Mate, and • an interesting opportunity for the Coffee-Mate Lite product. This Question Mark product is present in a high growth market and could be shifted to a star position. The environmental analysis, through the use of the SWOT tool, led to a clearer vision of Coffee Mate’s areas of competence and the areas that have to be improved. Coffee-Mate’s is a strong brand with a large advertising budget providing quality (and healthy with Coffee-Mate Lite) products. These strengths appear to be useful for breaking Coffee-Mate’s bad image of distress and poor taste product. An analysis of the customer’s market segmentation, which divides the market in 5 consumers sections leads to a distinction between two different buying behaviours: • cost constrained consumers who base their buying decision on prices; and • a group of customers called “premium”, who are prepared to pay a premium price for quality products. These BCG, SWOT and customer segmentation tools provide information about...
