This quote by Jean-Paul Sartre, a French philosopher and political activist, suggests that whomever is not working has time to make trouble for those who are. The book Animal Farm by George Orwell is an allegorical fiction reflecting events leading up to the Russian Revolution, and Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. Some of the leaders in the book Animal Farm, emulate this quote by using certain tactics to disrupt normalcy to advance their own personal agendas and interests. Throughout this story, the leaders of the farm use manipulation and equality in different ways to run the farm. As an example, he uses control when explaining his thoughts towards the Rebellion, “Old Major was so highly regarded on the farm that everyone was quite ready to lose an hour’s sleep in order to hear what he had to say” (Orwell 3). He controls differently than the other characters because he uses his authority in a positive way, as portrayed when trying to influence the animals to go through with the Rebellion. The reader is tricked into thinking that the leadership on the farm will not be the source of failure. Old Major makes the animals believe the Rebellion will be an enormous accomplishment. By showing the animals being manipulated, the author is demonstrating that in society can be blinded and taken advantage of by leaders with ill intentions. Other than manipulation, Old Major shows equality by acknowledging that ‘all animals are equal’. While he is explaining the Rebellion to the animals, he motivates them by saying, “And above all, no animal must ever tyrannise over his own kind. Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. No animal must ever kill any other animal. All animals are equal” (Orwell 8). To motivate the animals, Old Major models how they should be treating each other. This helps them realize that if they all work together, obstacles and hardships can be overcome. The reader can see the goals of Animal Farm, and animalism. They can also start to understand the superior intellect of the pigs over the rest of the animals. At the time, all of the animals were trusting that the Rebellion would lead them in a positive direction. Therefore, the author is able to use Old Major to set the goals and moods for the rest of the story, which makes the leaders able to manipulate the animals more effectively. For the animals, this is a
