What makes a successful sports shop?

I am opening a sports shop and I will be looking at choosing the best location for my shop because it is an idea which has been used by many, many people. So my location will be a key factor in the success of my sports shop. Before I think about my location, I need to find out what makes a good long term sports shop. I have done some research and I found some characteristics of a successful sports shop:

• Examples of products/in store displays

• Good lighting

• Quality staff/customer service

• Mirrors (floor)

• Brand images

• Seats for people to try on shoes etc.

• Wide range of storage

I have chosen 3 locations:

• Reading (Bennertt Road)

• Hong Kong

• Los Angeles

I have chosen Reading as one of my locations because it is a relatively small town and nearby. The pros are that it is close, there may not be many sports shops outside the Oracle Shopping Mall, and it is a small city/town and there are many motorways and roads which can be used to go to Reading. The cons are that there may be a few sports shops already and probably have more experience than mine and more people go there instead of mine

My next location is Hong Kong, purely because it is a massive city/country and there are loads of people who travel there every year. The pros are that it is obviously very big and attracts a lot of people and will be very busy. Another pro is that there is lots of road and there is a airports nearby and is easily accessible. The cons are that there are without a doubt more sports shops in Hong Kong, and the people from Hong Kong won’t be able to understand the shop as it will be in English.

The last location is Los Angeles. LA is very big and is a very sporty city as there are people running on the paths and people playing ‘Soccer’ and American Football. The pros are that it is a big area with lots of different places to open up a sports shop. The people would be able to understand what the shop says. And there are many roads, motorways and airports nearby so it is also easily accessible. The cons are that there will be more shops which may be easier to access than mine and it would cost a lot of money to open up a sports shop in LA as it is a very nice place.

You have to get up pretty early to call the States, if you want your privacy and you want to catch anybody awake at home; at home it’ll be sometime the night before. The desert is cool in the mornings too, or cooler, so that you’ll see the occasional soldier getting his PT in before it gets too hot, but he’s usually far enough away that you don’t have to whisper. I would watch the big black beetles fighting with each other in the dirt (they’re way bigger here than they are at home) while waiting for the call to go through. It always takes so long just to connect that I nearly give up before the static stops and the phone starts to ring. The day I was going home was about the worst:...

The Study of Language

...This page intentionally left blank The Study of Language This best-selling textbook provides an engaging and user-friendly introduction to the study of language. Assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, Yule presents information in short, bite-sized sections, introducing the major concepts in language study – from how children learn language to why men and women speak differently, through all the key elements of language. This fourth edition has been revised and updated with twenty new sections, covering new accounts of language origins, the key properties of language, text messaging, kinship terms and more than twenty new word etymologies. To increase student engagement with the text, Yule has also included more than fifty new tasks, including thirty involving data analysis, enabling students to apply what they have learned. The online study guide offers students further resources when working on the tasks, while encouraging lively and proactive learning. This is the most fundamental and easy-to-use introduction to the study of language. George Yule has taught Linguistics at the Universities of Edinburgh, Hawai’i, Louisiana State and Minnesota. He is the author of a number of books, including Discourse Analysis (with Gillian Brown, 1983) and Pragmatics (1996). “A genuinely introductory linguistics text, well suited for undergraduates who have little prior experience thinking descriptively about language. Yule’s crisp and thought-provoking presentation of key issues works...
