Situational Problem
Tom Owen is working towards increasing his business and profit by the means of changing his current services and products or offering new ones to meet his customers' needs, or by keeping his current products and services the same, but offering them to new markets.
S.W.O.T. Analysis
Strengths:
* Tom Owen himself is an asset in his knowledge of soccer and his ability to get along with the kids he's teaching. * Hiring instructors with similar qualities to create a good workforce. * MANU's market penetration of the Fort Collins area ensures that all soccer players age 11 to 14 are aware of his soccer program.
Weaknesses:
* MANU's dependence on Tom Owen in all of its functions offers little opportunity for him to expand to other locations.
Opportunities:
* The close proximity to three large cities that offer limited soccer training camps.
Threats:
* Some parents may consider soccer as a luxury that can be eliminated in face of economic downturn and growing unemployment. * The emergence of new soccer training programs in direct competition with MANU.
Market Situation
Approximately 90 percent of MANU’s customers live in Fort Collins which has a population of 110,000. Greeley and Longmont are about 25 miles away by interstate highway and have a population of approximately 80,000 each. Loveland is a city that is also about 25 miles from Fort Collins and has a population of approximately 60,000.

Competitive Situation
There is almost no direct competition for MANU in Fort Collins. The surrounding cities of Loveland, Greeley, and Longmont offer even less developed soccer programs.
Target Customer
The target customer for the MANU's services would be competitive soccer players from the ages of 11 to 14. However, the ultimate purchaser of these services would be the mother or father of the soccer player. This

...MANCHESTER UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB LINXIU ZOU/12422048 17/03/2014 TUTOR: DINUSHA BOTEJU STRM047 STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT 2598 words 1. Introduction Manchester United Football Club (MUFC) is one of the world’s biggest football clubs with more than £363 million in revenues. Facing an intensive competition, the survival and growth of MUFC relies on its core competences in order to obtain competitive advantages in such fierce markets. Being a leader in upscale industry, it stands in a unique position, but still faces competitions from its rivalries. The objective of this study performed a value chain, VIRO framework, Five force, and PEST analysis, identifying the internal and external environment of MUFC, the core competences of MUFC, the strategic directions and the implantation of the key strategies, the objective is to improve the efficiency of MUFC and achieve the football club industry sustainability in future. 2. Identifying and assessing MUFC’s competences Through examining MUFC’s competencies and performance in discrete activities, we can inferentially assess its overall competency. Parthasarthy (2007) stated that successful companies must possess both entrepreneurial and operational competencies. Thus, value chain is adopted to recognize and evaluate operational competencies (Porter, 2012). 2.1 Value chain Figure 1. Value chain of MUFC Value chain analysis facilitates MUFC to identify its competitive strengths and cost position. Figure 1 shows that MUFC’s...

...CASE STUDY I.2 Manchester United: still trying to establish a global brand Manchester United (abbreviated as ManUtd, www.manutd.com) has developed into one of the most famous and financially successful football clubs in the world, being recognized in virtually every country, even those with little interest in the sport. Real Madrid has displaced ManUtd from the pole position in Deloitte’s football money league. The list, which has been running for the last 9 years, identifies the top 20 clubs in terms of revenue. The top five in 2008 were: Real Madrid with 3365.8 million, Manchester United (3324.8 million), FC Barcelona (3308.8 million), Bayern Munich (3295.3 million) and Chelsea (3268.9 million) (Deloitte, 2009). Having won the Premier League and Champions League in 2007/08, United would have overtaken Real Madrid at the top of the Deloitte Football Money League had it not been for the depreciation of the pound. The top 20 clubs now generate more than three times the combined revenue of the clubs in the first Money League publication in 1996/97. The most valuable US sport teams, the National Football League’s Washington Redskins and baseball’s New York Yankees, are both worth somewhat more but more than any US sports team, ManUtd has built a global brand. Since the mass commercialization of football in 1992, Manchester United has unquestionably been the team to beat. In the past 16 seasons, it has collected 10 Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two Champion League trophies...

Child Labour

...CHILD LABOUR  1.The best way to reduce child labor for multinational corporations? Child labor offers perhaps the best example that big improvements in the workplace are always driven from pressure from within. Banning imports of products made by minors might make the people of San Francisco happy, but it has done very little to improve the lot of poor children overseas. “There is very little evidence supporting any connection between trade and child time allocation other than through the impact of trade on the living standards of the very poor,” writes Eric V. Edmunds, an economist at Dartmouth College who directs the Child Labor Network at the Institute for the Study of Labor. Most child laborers do not work in trade-related industries but in more backward areas of the economy — mainly in agriculture and retail trade. Some 300,000 children weave carpets in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, often for export. But this number pales next to the 8.4 million children ages 10 to 14 in India’s work force alone. The good news is that child labor has declined sharply. In 2008, 176.4 million children under 15 around the world held a job, about 35 million fewer than in 2000. But the main reason for that is industrialization and economic growth. Income growth is the one dynamic that we know can persuade parents to take their children out of the work force and put them in school. Unfortunately, campaigners in the West often ignore this finding. Garment manufacturers in Bangladesh fired...

Ever since I have started to study Geography, I wanted to write a thesis that would be read by more people than only my supervisors and would prove to be useful in some way. A traineeship during my studies as well as various projects and a general interest to discover the ‘mystery’ called India had brought me to the subcontinent several times since 2002, and it was soon clear to me I would focus on a topic in the Indian context. Even before I visited India for the first time I knew that it was not only about the Taj Mahal, tigers and finding enlightenment in some yoga class, but also about development, poverty and caste. Once in India, the contrast between vibrant economic development and widespread poverty became more than obvious, but the idea of caste remained somehow ambiguous. As foreigners are often only able to speak English, they can only communicate directly with those strata of society who also speak this language – most often these are not the poor or deprived of the Indian society, but those at the ‘upper’...
