I was blessed to be able to choose a story from hundreds of books on my bookshelf, and one night, I asked my mom to read Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown to me. It is a children’s book about a little bunny saying goodnight to everything in her room. Although Goodnight Moon has only 130 words, it taught me life lessons that I, otherwise, may not have ever learned. Gratitude and “goodnights” became very important to me that night. The bunny in the story said goodnight to all of the immense and tiny things in her room, and I began to do it, too. Despite running around, trying to raise three young kids, my mom always made enough time to read me a bedtime story. In the book, Goodnight Moon, the young bunny says goodnight to the old bunny who is looking after her, whispering, “hush”. I saw myself as the rabbit tucked into bed, and my mom as the rabbit in the rocking chair. At that moment I looked at my mom, then I looked at the old bunny in the rocking chair, and I realized how much she looks after me, like the old bunny in the illustration. For years, she sat with me, listened to how my day went, read me a story, kissed me on the head, sometimes checked for monsters in the closet, and whispered, “goodnight, I love you”. The little bunny says, “goodnight little kittens, and pair of mittens”, and later says, “goodnight stars, goodnight air, goodnight noises everywhere.” These statements show her appreciation for everything around her, big or small. I did not realize it when I was younger, but I had a very fortunate childhood. My parents were always there for me, they bought me most of the things that I wanted, but what was more important was their love that I had taken advantage of. So, before I fell asleep, I said goodnight to all of the stuffed animals and toys they had bought me, then I said good night to my mom and dad. I know my parents could not hear me from down the hall, but it was more important for me to say it, then for them to hear it, because they already knew how much I loved them. My parents were as extensive as the stars and moon that the bunny had said good night to, and the stuffed animals they had bought me were not as important, like the mittens. I layed in my bed, all tucked in, staring at the glow in the dark stars stuck to my ceiling. I was thankful for those stars, so I said goodnight to them. I was thankful for my siblings, my pets, my room, my doll house, the pictures on my wall, and plenty more things around me, so I said goodnight to all of them.
