I choose to speak about bottled water. To me, bottled water is the safest water to drink. According to ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, “Consumption of bottled water is increasing worldwide. Prior research shows many consumers believe bottled water is convenient and has better taste than tap water, despite reports of a number of water quality incidents with bottled water.” I must say I agree with this statement. I say this because of the many incidents in the tap water. Who wants to drink the same water the bathe with? “They find that U.S. consumers are more likely to report bottled water as their primary drinking water source when they perceive that drinking water is not safe. Furthermore, those who give lower ratings to the quality of their ground water are more likely to regularly purchase bottle water for drinking and use bottle water as their primary drinking water source.” With that being said, I will give a more detailed explanation on this issue.
Firstly, I will use this graph to discuss bottled water in terms of its current target market demographics using U.S. Census Data.
As we examine this graph we see that bottled water is widely used in several of countries. In each category we see an increase in the demand of the bottled water. Total consumption of bottled water increased per person increased by at least 30%. According to research from ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, “after years of substantial growth in sales, the U.S. bottled water market is recently slowing down. The current economic downturn may have played a part in the drop; however, environmental concern is also an important factor. Some research has found that environmental awareness campaigns may have curbed consumer demand.” I must say I agree with research.
After hearing all the commercials about how tap water isn’t safe it did detour me a little from drinking it. I have been buying bottled water every since. The main goal is to find quality drinking water but to see a decrease in this is quite disturbing. I believe there isn’t a complete way to weed out bacteria in water. So both forms of water bottled or tap will have bacteria. We believe bottled water to be the best option because its supposedly to be purified. Also people have started to say that plastic bottles are harmful to the water and to the person. Many news broadcastings I seen was telling us to keep bottled water at a certain temperature.
“Risk perception and preventive behaviors are the result of complicated social, cultural, and psychological factors as well as objective information. This suggests that because of the differences in economic, social, and environmental contexts, residents of different regions might have different attitudes towards bottled water. In an earlier study, the findings showed that people in the Pacific region had more per capita consumption of bottled water than in other places of the U.S. In this article, the regional factor is examined and the popularity of bottled water is mapped across geographic regions (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). This exert from research tells us the effects society has on bottled water. Location seems to be the most influential source.
Next I will make three (3) recommendations for possible action marketers of bottled water could take to address the product’s declining appeal to consumers. The first thing, I think marketers could do would be find a better location to get the water from. If the area or regions where the water comes from is the problem, we should find other locations. The second thing the marketers could do is take the price for bottled water down until the demand for it starts to increase. The third thing, they could do would be to advertise it more and give it a better look. Having the best quality water is a plus with consumers and marketers. If they could put a new face to water then they probably could make it more pleasing to its consumers. Finding a good area to get the water from would be good. At least then the person would know the water is better.
Based on items previous used by this country, I choose China as the best foreign country in which to market this product. “Since the late 1970s China has moved from a closed, centrally planned system to a more market-oriented one that plays a major global role - in 2010 China became the world’s largest exporter. After keeping its currency tightly linked to the US dollar for years, in July 2005 China revalued its currency by 2.1% against the US dollar and moved to an exchange rate system that references a basket of currencies (www.cia.gov).” Based on this information, we see that China is a possible good foreign country to trade with. Since we basically get everything from them, we should trade with them.
Now I will discuss my product segmentation and positioning ideas for this product or in China. With segmenting, the potential customers are everyone in both the United States and China. We would start off selling between these two countries then advancing to other countries. We will work with any country possible to get our goal to serving the best water accomplished.
With water being in high demand, I think we should try to keep our water supply up to par. Finding and giving the best water to our consumers will do great justice. If we continue to let our water decrease more people will depend more on tap water versus bottled water. Our focus in to have a high increase in bottled water. Furthermore, those who give lower ratings to the quality of their ground water are more likely to regularly purchase bottle water for drinking and use bottle water as their primary drinking water source.” With that being said, I will give a more detailed explanation on this issue.
