...Evaluating the role of ethnic identity in explaining the occurrence of contemporary civil conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa. High hopes for many newly independent states of Africa became diminished as the 1990s saw over a quarter of the continent's states facing armed insurgencies within their borders (Young, 2002: 534). Commentators often point to pathological, deep-seated hatreds in an African tribal mosaic as the bases of such conflict. The fact is, however, that the continent is awash with political grudges, ethnically-framed and otherwise, but civil wars rarely break out. Thus this essay seeks to take a more nuanced approach to understand the analytical challenge posed by such disorder. Starting out by countering the centrality of ethnic identity, it firstly seeks to demonstrate that ethnic identities do not exist primordially, but that they are constructed on weak foundations. Secondly it endeavours to show that where cleavages do exist along lines of cultural difference, simple heterogeneity is insufficient to account for the outbreak of conflict. Next, it moves to underline the fact that more important in explaining civil conflict is whether such conflict is feasible. This is understood both in terms of the perceived capacity of the state and in terms of the viability of insurgency for would-be rebels. Wufeng District Taichung 41349, Taiwan Abstract Martha Stewart places her name on her products. She becomes the face of her company and the voice of her brand. When her personal misconduct occurred, she made her company vulnerable and risky as well. This casestudy examines how Martha Stewart managed her corporate communication when her public image and reputation were tarnished on trial for alleged insider trading scandal. The trial not only led her to prison but also hurt her brand equity. The study shows that Stewart’s early response to her crisis demonstrated lack of situation awareness. In the beginning of her investigation, she kept her public persona intact, ignoring or downplaying her role in it. As a result, what Stewart called “a small personal matter” later became a full-blown crisis. If she had managed her communication in a more timely manner, the magnitude of her crisis might have been minimized. Abstract: Purpose: Present study makes an attempt to examine the impact of intellectual capital on financial performance of firms based on a sample consisting of 12 Indian banking companies which constituted the CNX Banking index of NSE during 2012-13. More specifically, it seeks to examine the impact of the IC represented by VAIC and the value added, on corporate financial performance measured by return on assets, earnings per share, and return on equity. Design/methodology/approach: In this study VAIC™ is considered as a key valuation model for measuring the IC performance of Indian Banking Companies. Capital employed, human capital and structural capital are used as components of intellectual capital and return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and Earning Per Share (EPS) indexes are used as criteria of financial performance. The value of three performance measures i.e. Return on Equity (ROE), Return on Assets (ROA), and Earning Per Share (EPS) are obtained from the annual reports of respective banks, whereas the values of VAIC and Value added are computed using appropriate formula and the ranking is made. The companies having highest value is ranked 1, next highest is ranked as 2, and so on. These types of sound can reach intensities of 140 dB SPL (sound pressure level) in frequencies around 2 and 3 kHz and, for this reason; they are harmful for human hearing3. When the human ear is exposed to impact noise, at a sound intensity of 120 dB or higher, there is a risk for acoustic trauma. This noise intensity can cause important and abrupt injuries to the cochlea, such as base membrane rupture, tissue and hair cell disarray. Clinically, one of the consequences of impact noise is an immediate and permanent unilateral or bilateral hearing loss, with tinnitus. In some cases, the hearing loss may improve after a few days4. Such a reversible elevation of auditory threshold produced by noise exposure is known as Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS). However, permanent exposure to intense noise damages the outer hair cells, especially those on the cochlear basal turn, very likely because this is the area of the organ which is more constantly stimulated5.
