Literature is the cream of life created in the imagination of a poet or a writer whose personality has outgrown the social limits and extended itself into the domain of impersonal consciousness. The individual we are is the social expression of the human being whose real existence transcends the social consciousness. Great poets and writers create in their imagination that Real Man and make him play a limited social role where he often peeps out of his social personality into his universal individuality. It is this extra dimension of those characters that is fascinating to us and renders them immortal characters. We see that the immortality of a character is his innate universality.

Jane Austen’s genius captured the flavour of the French Revolution wafting across the shores of England which was anxious to restructure its society so as to avoid a bloody revolution. Mental growth that assimilates the spirit of the times can compel the body to rise to the occasion, thus avoiding the inherent violence of any revolution. England did escape the guillotine by exercising its social wisdom which was willing to unite the higher and lower strata of the society.

Pride and Prejudice can be seen as a story of several marriages where the abominable pride of Darcy becomes the uncontrollable passion of his heart. Romance is the adventure of the heart for the unattainable. This approach views the story as the aristocracy descending to the commoner in its passion to preserve the society by preserving itself. It is this social power of passionate self-preservation that passes through Darcy to Elizabeth as an irresistible romantic attraction. Elizabeth is the best daughter of the gentrified Mr. Bennet and the mother of intense physical energy who is neither educated nor enlightened. ...I would add that any Marxist reading of the book would also necessarily consider Marx's concept of alienation. Marx saw alienation as a basic estrangement of the individual, as a person, from his role in society. In a capitalist society, according to Marx, the worker, who actually through his labor produces wealth, is nevertheless alienated from the thing that he produces, since the capitalist owns the means of production. The worker is only a cog in the capitalist machine. Characters like Lady Catherine or Mr Darcy might seem at first to have little to do with the production of wealth; in fact, the definition of a "gentleman" is someone who lives off the labor of others. However, in my view Darcy and the rest are as much victims of capitalist alienation, as much "cogs in the machine," as any worker. By this I mean not only the property law that would strip Mr Bennet of his estate on his death, but the rigid social rules that determine rank and subordinate personal values or inclination to status and money. Almost every character in the book is reified in this way, that is, their identity as a person is replaced, or erased, by their position in society, as determined by their wealth. One possible avenue such a Marxist reading could pursue would be to examine the attitudes of characters to this social hegemony.
