Mary S. Psychosocial Assessment

Identifying information According to a report on September 29, 2007, Susan, at the Borough of Manhattan, reported an alleged inadequate guardianship. There was an African American family whose members are grandmother, Mary 53-year-old; her daughter 32-year-old Susan; and 15 year old son, Jason. This African American family has a comfortable socioeconomic status. The family appears to have enough money to meet needs because Jason is able to participate in extracurricular activities. Mary’s family seems to be middle class.

Susan’s son, Jason, confirmed what was reported and also informed CPS that she filed a petition with Family Court to terminate the guardianship rights of Mary S. In addition, it was disclosed that Jason often called Susan crying for help. Mary S. has used excessive punishment while disciplining and taking care of her grandson Jason. The source also disclosed that Mary S. has left Jason home alone for days at a time. Widows and Widowhood Inheritance

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY 1.1 Introduction Stripping widows of property is a huge social problem in Zimbabwe especially with the escalating death toll due to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Customary laws have been unable to address the problem which suggests that extra- legal interventions might be necessary. Social work intervention is necessary to preserve the widow’s worth and dignity as a human being, which is the principal value of social work. A widow is a woman who has lost a husband by death and has not remarried, according to The South African Concise Oxford Dictionary. Property stripping refers to depriving someone of acquired or inherited movable or immovable possessions that rightfully and legally belong to that person (The South African Concise Oxford Dic tionary; Kuenyehia 2003). This study uses stripping and grabbing interchangeably as refer ring to the same act. Basing their studies in Ikot Idem in Nigeria, Okunmadewa, Aina, Ayoola, Mamman, Nweze, Odebiyi, Shedu and Zacha (2002:106) maintain: [W]omen’s wellbeing often deteriorates quickly after the loss of their husbands, when they suffer threats of both their physical security and property. A widow often loses her husband’s property to the in-laws in accordance with family traditional rules. This study proposes to explore the widows’ experiences of property inheritance in the Binga District, in the North West of Zimbabwe...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
