Masaccio Charts In The Renaissance

In the Renaissance, Masaccio brought Giotto had begun, back to light which was the monumental figures, a realistic relationship between figures and landscape, and visual representation of the laws of perspective. With all of this, a new realistic of painting was conformed. His massive, three-dimensional human figures inspired other Florentine painters. Other Florentine painters adopted and changed this new Renaissance style. With this development growing, the experiment went in two directions. One stressed the mathematical side, working out the laws of perspective and the organization of outdoor space and light by geometry and perspective. By halfway through the 15th century, European monarchies had enlarged their authority and resources and were in a place to look beyond their borders. Europeans had gained a level of wealth and technology to go on these voyages beyond Europe. But the highly schematic and symbolic medieval maps were not very useful. In the 13th and 14th centuries, medieval navigators made charts that were much more helpful. These charts were detailed with coastal contours, distances between ports, and compass readings. This improved their voyage. The con of the charts was that it was drawn on a flat surface and no one really took into account of the shape of the earth. So when Europeans got farther and farther, the charts weren’t very helpful. But by getting further, they were able to see how the earth was shaped. By the end of the 15th century, Ptolemy created a world map that was in Arab and translated into a Latin translation and with this they were be able to print copies of the spherical world. This map showed three landmasses; Europe, Asia and Africa and two oceans. But the only thing Ptolemy was off about is the circumference of the earth. An important figure was Christopher Columbus, who had very little understanding of the circumference of the earth and how huge Asia is. He was declined by the Portuguese to finance the voyage but he persuaded Queen Isabella of Spain too. While on the voyage, he would report back to the Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, he assured them that he would find gold and that he could convert the natives he called “Indians” to Christianity. The Europeans saw the new territory as new opportunities and exploitation.
