Math 217 Teaching Project Instructions
Write a lesson plan that teaches a concept we have learned in Math 217, but modify it to be appropriate for a certain grade level. Do not use any of the activities that we do in class. Be creative. Your lesson plan should include objectives, state the Virginia SOL that it corresponds with, grade level the lesson is designed to be used with and the time the activity would take. Write up the body of the lesson plan with enough details that another teacher could recreate the lesson without difficulty. It is not necessary to include every word that you would say while teaching the lesson. If any worksheet, papers, cards, etc are needed in the lesson, include copies of templates. Also, keep everything in electronic form as well.

Spring 2015 Name: Nathan Munson | Date: 4/23/2014 | Grade Level: Kindergarten | Time allowed for project: 15 minutes | Objective:Students will be able to identify and draw circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles of varying sizes with 4/4 accuracy. | Virginia SOL:Geometry K.11: The student willa) identify, describe, and trace plane geometric figures (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle);andb) compare the size (larger, smaller) and shape of plane geometric figures (circle, triangle,square, and rectangle). | Instructions/Steps in Activity:Students will be introduced and exposed to the identification and drawing of 4 shapes through a project inspired by Piet Mondrian (A dutch painter who inspired the modern art movement of neoplasticism).First the students will be asked to draw as many shapes as they want on a piece of paper with a black marker. They MUST have at least one rectangle, square, circle, and triangle. It does not matter if they intersect or not, but we do want them to vary in size. Since this is an art project, we want them to have full range of creativity. The teacher will also provide objects to help the students trace the different shapes. After the students draw their shapes, the teacher will provide them with colored pencils. The RED colored pencil will be used to color in the triangles. The BLUE colored pencil will be used to color in the circle. The GREEN colored pencil will be used to color in the rectangle. The YELLOW colored pencil will be used to color in the square.After they finish the project, the teacher should talk to the students about how shapes are the same even when they are different sizes, and through using different colors for the shapes, the teacher can also easily practice shape identification with the students.This project is an easy way to help introduce shapes to students while also providing them with a beautiful piece of artwork to take home. |

To this end, we reviewed the relevant research conducted in the last 15 years by following the procedures outlined below.
