Solving Proportions
There are many examples of algebra and Math that are more than just ambiguous elusive concepts. Many Math and Algebraic functions are used by a wide array of people in many different industries. Math is used to do more than write computer codes and by financial professionals. Math is used by many others for a lot of practical applications and purposes. It can even be used by conservationist as we will see in a sample problem we are given to work on the observation of a bear population.
Problem # 56 on page 437(Dugopolski, 2012) is the observance of a population of 50 bears captured on the Keweenaw Peninsula tagged released back into the wild. One later a random sample of 100 bears yielded only two that had been tagged. In this example a proportion will be used to estimate the size of the bear population. The original bear population will be examined against the later observed population to make this determination.
The ration for the original tagged population against the entire population is 50/x
The ratio of bears recaptured tagged bears against entire sample 2/100
50 = 2 This is the proportion that will be used to solve the problem by solving for x
X 100 Cross multiplying will be used to yield a solution. The extremes of our proportion are 50 and 100 and the means are 2 and x.
50 (100) = 2x
5000 = 2x Both sides are divided by 2 2 2
2 is canceled out on the right side of the equation leaving 5000/2=x, x=2500.
This means that the estimated population of bears on the Keweenaw Peninsula is 2500.
I have seen on many animal shows on televisions where scientist tag animals release them
And come back at a later time and recapture a sample to study tagged populations for various reasons. I now see one way they are able to calculate and estimate populations which means they are also able to look for population fluctuations. The second problem given to solve is problem # 10 on page 444(Dugopolski, 2012). In this problem we are asked to solve for y. The second problem as given is also a proportion. The problem as given is as follows: y-1 = - 3 Upon examining this problem it becomes apparent that it is not only a x+3 4 proportion but is also the equation a line. We can still use the extreme- means method of cross multiplication to find a solution to the problem. 4(y-1)= -3(x+3) This is the extremes and means cross multiplied. 4y-4= =-3x-9 4 is distributed on the left hand side and 3 is distributed on the right 4y-4+4= -3x-9+4 add 4 to both sides 4y = -3x-5 Divide both sides by 4 to isolated y 4 4 y= ¼ (-3x-5) the solution is in linear equation form y=mx+b

x+3 cannot =0 0 is an Extraneous Solution because if x were to equal 0 It would no longer be a rational expression.

These two examples show different examples of practical applications of proportions.
One way illustrates how math extends beyond the math world and into the world of science. The other example builds off previous lessons learned on linear equations, and shows how proportions are used to solve them. This also shows math lessons are like building blocks. The applications can be used to build and construct.

The assignment was a real world application of using these types of equations to solve shipping problems. We can use these equations to figure out the solutions to common problems and provide graphs to show a range of correct and incorrect answers that is easier to read. The problem that was given, #68 on pg. 539 shows a graph that illustrates how many TVs and refrigerators a semi-truck can hold at any given time in any combination of the two. By looking at the graph, it shows that you can have a maximum load of 330 TVs with 0 fridges or 110 fridges with 0 TVs. It drawn as a solid line to show that any point on that line could also be a solution, as opposed to a dashed line which would denote not including those values into the solution. Also, because there are so many solutions, the area is shaded to include all viable numbers. You can substitute y for the number of TVs and x for the number of refrigerators for the purpose of simplifying the equation.
