4 CHAPTER I Introduction Mathematics is one kind of science. We cannot do a single moment without mathematics. It has made our life easy and comfortable. In official and personal life become paralyzed without mathematics. Different kinds of functions are performed by mathematics. It works with numbers, counting, and numerical operations. It is used to calculate something. It can be done both technically and manually. Large and complicated mathematical problems are solved by the computer software. On the other hand, easy mathematical operations are performed without the help of any machine or computer software. The merits of mathematics in our life cannot be described in words. It has opened a new dimension to us. We cannot do a single day without mathematics. It helps us to solve difficult mathematical problems. It has enriched our life. Mathematics helps us to decide if something is a good, risky or not. Mathematics helps us to create everything as without the application of mathematics. We cannot create any building, picture, furniture, good art, wallpaper, your room, bridge etc. It shows us to become beneficial in life. We can compare between two with the help of mathematics. Mathematics is used in every sphere of our life. There is no any place of our life where mathematics is not used. Any kind of treatment is not possible without mathematics. Today there is no any place where mathematics is not used. We cannot think a single moment without mathematics.

At present, mathematics has become a subject of studies and research. Millions of students and teachers are now researching on mathematics. They always engage themselves to find out any kind of easy usages of mathematics. Different students of different countries have taken mathematics as their graduation’s subject. The advancement of mathematics has been running in era by era. The today’s advancement of mathematics has not done overnight. There is long and meaningful history of it. In the ancient period, men keep their account writing in the wall, drawing curve, drawing picture, collecting stone etc. Today the era has been changed. In this modern period, men keep their account in writing on paper, computer software and in different technical ways. In spite of having a lot of advantages, sometimes it is observed that some people use mathematics in evil or destructive acts. The invention and operation of different kinds of destructive weapons are the example of them. Which weapon will drop which place is decided with mathematics. A bomb is dropped sitting thousands of miles away with the help of mathematical calculations.

In the end, it can be said that it helps us to take any kinds of decision. It works just like a mentor. Without mathematics, we never take any decision. Our everyday life depends much on mathematics. We cannot go even an inch without mathematics. Our life becomes paralyzed without mathematics. Therefore, it can be said that mathematics is a part and parcel in our daily life.

Statistics is a particularly useful branch of mathematics that is not only studied theoretically by advanced mathematicians but one that is used by researcher in many fields to organize, analyze, and summarize data. Statistical methods and analysis are often used to communicate research findings and to support hypothesis and give credibility to research methodology and conclusions. It is important for researcher and also consumers of research to understand statistics so that they can be informed, evaluate the credibility and usefulness of information, and make appropriate decisions. (http.//www.bcps.org./offices/lis/researchcourse/statistics_role.html) Historical note: the origin descriptive statistics can be traced to data collection methods used in censuses taken by the Babylonians and Egyptians between 4500 and 3000 B.C. in addition, the Roman Emperor Augustus (27 B.C.- A.D. 17) Conducted surveys on births and death of the citizens of the empire, as well as the number of livestock each owned and the crops each citizen harvested yearly. (Elementary Statistics by: Allan G. Bluman)
`Mathematical thinking is not the same as doing mathematics – at least not as mathematics is typically presented in our school system. School math typically focuses on learning procedures to solve highly stereotyped problems. Professional mathematicians think a certain way to solve real problems, problems that can arise from the everyday world, or from science, or from within mathematics itself. The key to success in school math is to learn to think inside-the-box. In contrast, a key feature of mathematical thinking is thinking outside-the-box – a valuable ability in today’s world. https://www.coursera.org/course/maththink

...over emphasized. Students who have so much difficulties with their communication skill in English language may not function effectively, not only in English language but in their academic and this is no reason than the fact that English language in Nigeria today is the language of text-books and the language of instruction in schools. When Students’ Proficiency in English Language is high, it will definitely affect and improve the academic performance of such students. Nevertheless, where the proficiency in English is lacking in any academic setting, it will definitely lower the academic performance of such students. [2] vehemently, revealed that lack of proficiency in English language is one of the factors contributing to poor performance in Mathematics. In his research, he observed that the performance of students in Mathematics’ examination at Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) is poor but further stated that the performance in English is more than that of Mathematics and this he linked to poor reading ability .He then suggests that there is need to improve the teaching of English language to improve Mathematics’ education. [17] in his work proved that competency in English significantly determines performances in intelligence or academic tests. The revelation above seem to suggest that mastery of English language is very importance even in students’ academic performances in intelligence tests, especially when it comes to the issues of Science and Technical...

No Child Left Behind Act

...No Child Left Behind Act Outline “The No Child Left Behind Act” is the most recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. This law holds the states as well as the schools accountable for the academic achievements of the students as funds are being supplied to the states for this purpose. This law requires quality teaching by highly qualified teachers and yearly assessment of student progress in English, mathematics and science skills. The progress of the students needs to be reported in terms of percentage of students scoring at the ‘proficient’ or higher level. Different subgroups categories need also report the progress annually. A standardized test method has been chosen in each state and based on the scores in that test the performance level of the students and their schools is judged. This law acquired huge range of controversy since its implementation. Some advocates its effectiveness in ensuring equalization in the system of education and a certain level of proficiency in all students. They argue that schools must be accountable for the performance of their students. But the law has several loopholes, which provoke the schools to get involved in some kinds of malpractice. The future of students may also be affected by more and more...

Malaysian Students Are Poor Problem Solvers, Survey Says

...Malaysian students are poor problem solvers, survey says BY PATRICK LEE Email Facebook 1K PETALING JAYA: When it comes to problem-solving, Malaysian 15year-olds are among of the world’s poorest, a survey by Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has determined. The 2012 survey conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that more than one in five Malaysian students could not even reach basic levels of problem solving. Malaysia came in at 39th with a mean score of 422 points among the 44 countries surveyed. In comparison, Singapore topped the list of countries with 562 points. Malaysia’s score also put it below the OECD average of 500 points. The survey divided problem solving proficiency into six levels, with Level 6 being the highest and Level 1 being the lowest, though it was added that there was a level below Level 1. “... and in Uruguay, the United Arab Emirates, Montenegro, Malaysia, Brazil and Israel, more than one in five students do not reach this level (Level 1),” the report said. The PISA 2012 report said students proficient at Level 1 can only explore problems given to them in a limited manner. “In general, students at Level 1 can solve straightforward problems provided there is only a simple condition to be satisfied and there are only one or two steps to be performed to reach that goal.” According to the survey, students were given problems to explore and come up with solutions. These included trying to...

Why Teaching Basic Math Skills Is Important

...Why Basic Theory is Important in Teaching Mathematics Nicole Galloway Math 601 Number Systems Research Paper The first and most important question I am going to ask is, is math important and why. Math, it's everywhere. You just can't avoid it; no matter how hard you try. We use math when we're trying to figure out how much fertilizer is needed for fields of corn, onions, or cotton. We use math when we want to bake two-dozen of those mouth-watering chocolate chip cookies that our children will devour as soon as they come barreling through the door. What do we use when we need to know how much money is in our checking account? You've got it, math! Just try to build that extra room without using math. It can't be done. Mathematics is one of the most important subjects that provide several vital skills to the learners. Some of the skills that people get from math include: the ability to identify and analyze patterns, logic and critical thinking skills, ability to see relationships and problem solving skills. Math is important because it allows people to perform complex calculations for everyday purposes using a set formula or mathematical procedure. Math allows for precise calculations and measurements for almost everything we do! Math is so important because it allows us to do everyday things with ease. Rounding, estimating, fractions and percentages are just a few of the ways we use math in our everyday life. So math is important as it is found in...

...understood and help the researchers to gather more information. Analysis of Students’ Performance in Junior Secondary School Mathematics Examination in Bayelsa State of Nigeria The finding of this study showed that students’ performance in 2006 JSS Mathematics test was high. Comparing the hypothetical pass mark of 20.00 with the students’ mean score of 28.59 this indicated that the students performed very well. This result is in agreement with Linn (1965), Anderson (1942) and Akpan (1989) who reported that if an examiner has a favourable attitude towards a particular subject, then this will reflect in his performance in that subject. This is to say that since mathematics has been made compulsory and a pre-requisite for admission into the senior secondary, hence the students have developed a favourable attitude towards the subject resulting in their high performance. On whether performance is influenced by sex, the result showed that male students obtained higher mean score than the females with the calculated t-value significant. This result is in line with those of Fememe and Sherman (1977), Grambs (1972), Comber and Keeves (1973), Tyler (1961), Fin et al. (1979) and Maccoby and Jacklin (1975) who all observed that in nearly all cases reported, males outscored females in mathematics tests. On whether the location of a school influences performance in mathematics tests, the result showed that students from rural schools against all odds performed higher than those from urban schools...

The Importance Of Education

...In the 21st Century, learning skills and innovation have become fundamental requirements for all learners. Educators and teachers should pay more attention on improving their own abilities and skills in teaching processes and learning management in order for students to possess life-long knowledge and skills. Students should be active learners, and the teacher should play a role as a learning facilitator. Teachers should focus on designing effective teaching techniques in order to encourage student participating in classroom activities, asking students what they have learned and what they would like to learn more. These methods are similar to the concept of education in Singapore, “Teach Less, Learn More” (Panich, 2012). The student-centered...
