In Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella Ewell, the supposed 19 year-old victim of Tom Robinson, lives a life of hard work under her drunkard father; moreover, she is a victim of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, a truly hopeless child sadly forgotten in the folds of society. Mayella Ewell is both a product of her environment and a social outcast. Mayella, the 19 years old daughter of Bob Ewell, acts as a maternal figure in the house after the demise of her mother. Likewise, she is a hard worker, as noted by Atticus. More notably, she is a victim of abuse. During Tom Robinson’s trial, it becomes evident that she is indeed a victim of some sort of physical violence, with deep bruises on the right side of her face. …show more content…
Noticing these discrepancies, Atticus, the defense attorney has Mr. Ewell demonstrate that he writes left handed. Moreover, he is shown to be the true offender in this case. Atticus further tries to incriminate the accuser, that is Mr. Ewell, by asking Mayella whether she is treated well, to which she responds, “He does tollable, ‘cept when-”, stopping as she catches herself (Lee 208). She is noted to have glanced over to her father as Atticus asked her to clarify the truth, that is that her father beats her while he is intoxicated. She then denies any sort of malice on her father’s behalf, seeing him straighten his back and glare at her. This shows that she is afraid of her father, as his physical abuse is a threat to her well being. Moreover, those witnessing this see that she is truly is a victim, not of Tom, but of her own father. The extent of her victimization is further clarified by Tom, whose account shows that she is a victim of sexual and emotional abuse. While taking the stand, Tom Robinson includes in his account that when coming onto him, Mayella said she had never kissed a man before, as “what her papa do to her don’t

...“It's the people who don't recognize the racism within themselves that can be the most damaging because they don't see it” This quote can easily summarize the whole the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, the novel takes places during the Great Depression in a small town in Maycomb Alabama, the story is told in a first person point of view through the eyes of Jean-Louise a.k.a Scout Finch, she lives with her brother Jem Finch and their widowed dad Atticus Finch who is a well known lawyer, this means that the family is well of economicalle compared to the rest of the society. Fast forward one year Atticus is chosen to advocate for a black Tom Robinson against a white Mayella/Bob Ewell. Atticus Finch, in his closing argument, addresses three main points of the Tom Robinson case: first he asserts that Mayella Ewell has done two things wrong, one of them is that “she tempted a negro”, and the other one accusing Tom Robinson of rape to”get rid of the evidence; then he contends, that it was wrong to accuse Tom Robinson of rape; finally, he concludes by saying that all men are created equal, but people use this phrase out of context, to satisfy all conditions....

...others. With the power Mayella has, she uses it to her advantage to convict an innocent man because of her wrongdoings. Because of Mayella’s class, and gender, Mayella lacks power, but her race makes her powerful. Again, Mayella Ewell lacks power because of her social class. “Maycomb’s Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a negro cabin” (Doc A) shows and tells us that the Ewells class falls very low, limiting Mayella’s power socially. Mayella’s limited social power is also shown in the quote “Mayella must have been the most lonely person in the world… white people had nothing to do with her because she lived among pigs, and the negroes wouldn’t have anything to do with her because she is white” (Doc E) because Mayella was not socially accepted by anyone. It is lastly shown in the quote “‘Won’t answer a word long as you keep mocking me”’ because this shows Mayella has never seen the power to be called “ma’am” or “Miss”, so she takes great offense to it when Atticus speaks (Doc C). Besides the lack of power socially due to her social class, Mayella also...

To Kill A Mockingbird Innocence Quotes

...“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy… that’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (p. 119) is a quote by Miss Maudie that best describes the meaning of the mockingbird symbol. The symbol embodies innocent people, who have been injured or destroyed through contact with evil. Harper Lee does a great job in portraying the mockingbird symbol by shedding some light on the innocents in the book, and focusing on the most prominent mockingbirds, Tom Robinson, Arthur (Boo) Radley, and Mayella Ewell. Tom Robinson is a crippled Mockingbird, who has been wrongfully...

Who Is Mayella Ewell's Power In To Kill A Mockingbird

...of Tom Robinson, an African American male, accused of rape by a woman named Mayella Ewell. Mayella Ewell is a young, poverty-stricken woman who is mainly controlled by her father. In a town divided by race, class and gender, Mayella does not have a large amount of power over her own life. It could be implied that because Mayella is white, she has terminal power, but that may not be the case. Though she is white, she is shunned by the white community along with the African American community. “White people wouldn’t have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs; Negroes (the Ewells’ nearest neighbors) wouldn’t have anything to do with her because she was white.” (Lee 1960 Chapter nineteen.) Mayella was rejected by whites due to the fact that she lived in poverty and had no money. She was also rejected by African Americans simply because she was white. Being white did not give her much of an advantage....

Later when Atticus comes home, Scout asked Atticus why he didn’t do anything to Bob Ewell even though he spitted in his face, he responded with a quote, "So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that's something I'll gladly take. To Kill a Mockingbird

...illustrates that Tom Robinson is not capable of committing a crime that could cost him his life when we first meet him. This is at the beginning of the trial when Tom takes the oath and tries to place his ‘rubber-like left hand’ on the bible but it slips off. Tom tries again but the same thing happens. The reader’s sympathy is engaged here as they can clearly see that Tom is incapable of taking Mayella Ewell around the neck and raping her. As well as being physically handicapped, Tom has a handicap that he has no control over, his skin colour. Harper Lee Makes the reader feel sorry for Tom Robinson before he has even given his testimony so that the readers see the rest of the trial through sympathetic eyes towards Tom. The reader feels that Tom Robinson is being accused by a bunch of rough people, the Ewells. The examples of the Ewells being rough compared to Tom is shown through their speech. Tom’s dialogue is very respectful towards Atticus and Mayella, this is shown when he testifies and says ‘Miss Mayella, Sir’. The exact opposite can be said for the Ewells, when Mayella loses her temper and describes Atticus and the other ‘fine-fancy gentlemen’ as ‘yellow stinkin’ cowards’. Bob Ewell’s speech is no more respectful than his daughter’s as he calls his own lawyer ‘cap’n’. Here the reader’s sympathy is engaged as they realise that Tom Robinson is a respectful black man who is up against two unrespectful white people. Again, this engages the reader’s sympathy as Tom...

Tom Robinson Innocent In To Kill A Mockingbird

...Tom Robinson should be acquitted because he is innocent and there is no medical evidence suggesting Tom actually beat or raped Mayella Ewell. The evidence actually suggests that Bob Ewell, her own father beat her. She has bruises on the right side of her face, which could only come from a left hand. Tom Robinson's hand was torn up in a cotton gin, he can only use his right hand now. The jury has an unfair assumption of African Americans and bias opinions of them. This is not fair to Tom who is innocent because they will want to put him in jail no matter what. One reason Tom Robinson is innocent is that there is no medical evidence that says that Tom raped or even touched Mayella. On page 271 Atticus says, “The state has not produced one...

Critical Analysis of "To Kill a Mockingbird"

...Task 2: Critical Analysis Ngien Sing Jier For this semester, we are analysing a novel entitled ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ written by Harper Lee. I find this novel very meaningful and interesting to read as well. After reading and analysing the novel a few times along with the teachings of my lecturer, I can differentiate the story told from different perspectives, parts when Scout was young and parts when she was an adult. It is about the life and happenings in Maycomb County. The story is told in the first person point of view whereby Scout as the narrator, is a character in the story who tells us everything she has experienced. She can reveal only personal thoughts and feelings and what she sees and is told by other characters. Harper Lee wrote this novel based on her real life experience during childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it. “Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ takes readers to the roots of human behavior namely innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humour and pathos.” Theme is the main idea or underlying meaning of a literary work. A theme may be stated or implied. Theme differs from the subject or topic of a literary work in that it involves an opinion or statement about the topic but not every literary work has a theme. Themes may be major or minor. A major theme is an idea the author returns to time and again, becomes one of the most important ideas in the story...

...takes a Stand “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 39). This Quote by Harper Lee, is an illustration on reaching tolerance. Atticus believes that part of the reason why there is prejudice is because people don't understand each other. However, many people in Maycomb are misunderstood, avoided, or discriminated by the town people, including Boo Radley, the Ewells, and all black people. Atticus like a father teaches these words to Scout and Jem.
