What I did: I always know that my English grammar needs improving. Grammar is the very basic for English learning in every aspect. I tend to make plural and tense mistakes in my speaking and writing. Undoubtedly, developing a solid foundation in English grammar will not only help me create my own sentences correctly but will also make it easier to improve my communication skills in both spoken and written English. I searched few grammar practice tests on the internet and finished them in about 45 minutes. Then I summarized some grammar rules that I failed to master. Last but not the least, I did some research online on how to improve English grammar.

What I learnt: I’ve been through all of the English classes and tests in China, and the only thing I learned from those is – forget about grammar, follow your instinct. The main point is to communicate with people. Grammar cannot be the obstacle to cut me off from communicating with people. Dwelling on grammar too much always brothers me and prevents me from communicating with people. I tend to think too much if I always try to think if my grammar is right or wrong, which is not helpful. However, learning a new language and grammar is never easy. It will take a little time and effort – but the reward will be worth the work.

What I improved: I start to realize that grammar is just a small piece of English learning. I should read newspapers, watch TV shows as often as possible to develop my language intuition rather than memorizing rules all the time. But I do pay more attention on the regular mistakes I make and try to remind myself all the time whenever using

Personal Marketing Plan

...Personal Development Plan By Nidhi Shukla | Carlow University EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Combining business school education, professional/personal development training, and self-education along with life experiences has directed me toward beginning a career as a business analyst and later on being an entrepreneur. I have been taking classes and exploring various business opportunities as well. I am an MBA student at Carlow University. I have masters in Physics and English from India and during the course of my graduation, and have also studied various art mediums to explore creative talents. I have decided to combine those strengths and interests into my career path. Now that graduation is closer it is time to formulate and begin executing a plan for the next 5 to 10 years of my life. INTRODUCTION During my education and my career as a high school teacher, I have learnt that leadership is a critical management skill and an ability to motivate a group of people toward a common goal. These items help to develop a person’s skills as a leader. Personal Development Planning is useful in this regard as it is a structured and supported process undertaken by an individual to reflect upon their own learning, performance and/or achievement and to plan for their personal, educational and career development. The benefits of PDP are numerous. PDP processes are designed to improve the capacity of individuals to understand what and how they are learning, and to review, plan and take responsibility...

Classic Airlines and Marketing Essay

...Airlines and Marketing Essay Kimberly Clancy MKT/571 May 9, 2011 Alan Mandel Classic Airlines is a company that wants to be profitable by adapting a marketing concept. The company has to analyze its external and internal environment to determine opportunities any threats that would inhibit the company from success, increase profits and give the company a competitive advantage. A method some companies use to analyze the market he or she works in is the Porter’s Five Forces Model. This technique is used to identify a company’s structure to determine its corporate strategy. This method can be used to any segment of the economy to research for profits and attractiveness (Quick MBA, 2010). The barrier of entry for the company is too steep however; the strong competition in the market displays the company’s profitability. Classic Airline is the fifth largest airline and has been in business for 25 years. The airline has had decreased profits for a few reasons. First, is the public’s increase in the hesitation of flying and the decreasing of reward programs in place. Second, the increase of labor and fuel costs along with customers switching to fly with a different airline. Third, the company is being closely scrutinized and watched from all sectors (University of Phoenix, 2011). This essay will discuss how Classic Airlines has to reexamine its marketing concepts to increase profitability in addition to addressing any concepts that relate to the company scenario. ...My desired post MBA role after graduating from UC Berkeley-Haas is to work as a business designer for IDEO, preferably in my home city of Chicago. I first heard of IDEO when they came to speak at the University of Michigan’s engineering campus about human to computer interaction, and the presentation was absolutely fascinating. I have been hooked on the company ever since, even picking up a copy of The Little Book of IDEO that has helped to drive many of my product design decisions over the past few years. The seven values that are a part of the culture at IDEO are to be optimistic, collaborate, embrace ambiguity, learn from failure, make others successful, take ownership, and talk less, do more. These beliefs are instilled in a corporate environment that focuses on a human-centered approach to innovation as the designs that they create are ultimately geared toward helping people. Those at IDEO seek to challenge themselves to explore the unknown, similar to Haas, and are constantly developing new concepts and improving their processes. For these reasons, an MBA from Haas would prepare me to work at IDEO as they share and champion similar principles. In addition to sharing the key ethics that are a part of IDEO culture, my engineering background in combination with my professional experience make me a compelling candidate for IDEO. My professional experience has allowed me to acquire the technical expertise required in working with sophisticated mechanical and software...

Marketing for Entrepreneurs

...Core Marketing: Marketing for Entrepreneurs Summary of the posted Powerpoint deck: What I would have said if we had more time Note 1: I consider this to be extra material. I don’t expect you to know it for the exam. I present it because I think it may help you in the lab-to-market sequence. Note 2: My comments in this talk are based mainly on a decade of talking to students about their start-up ideas. Take this advice for what it is worth. You should keep in mind that I am not an inventor, an entrepreneur, or a venture capitalist. The AirMount: more information about this amazing failed invention, in case you want to look any of this up. Plus a possible new version based on similar principles from a company called Tesla Amazing. (Notice that they call their product “magnetic” even though it doesn’t involve magnets) Main lessons from the AirMount: Just because a product is cool doesn’t mean you should invest time and money developing it. You have to solve a real customer problem at a price customers are willing to pay. If you do the EVC on the AirMount, and you take staples or tape as a reference product, you’ll notice that you don’t have much room for a margin. Generally speaking, there are two ways to start a business: start with a solution and find a customer need it solves; or start with a customer need and find the best way to solve it. Both ways can work. There are lots of successful, rich inventors who start with solutions first. However, I think that MBA education...

Ten Thousand Villages

...Ten Thousand Villages Marketing Analysis Ten Thousand Villages Marketing Analysis Opportunities Ten Thousand Villages (TTV) is the only location in Cincinnati, a city with a population of 331,280 people. This presents some distinct opportunities. First, it provides a sufficient population base to sustain the business. The primary market, “cultural creative” people, account for approximately 19 thousand individuals (based on the percentages provided). Since the store served 10,880 customers throughout the first year, there is an opportunity to reach an additional eight thousand people. Based on the rate of increase in demand for socially responsible products across North America, this number could even be larger. Second, TTV is located in O’Bryonville, which has more drive-by traffic than foot traffic. So, a second opportunity exists for TTV; to move to a location with significantly more foot traffic, like Hyde Park, in order to reach the additional people. A final opportunity is to record the information about consumers that visit the store. They are already inquiring how customers heard about the store and if they were a repeat customer, there is an opportunity to find out more about, and potentially expand the target market by simply recording the information and analyzing the results. Threats Cincinnati has four other businesses with similar products to TTV: Pier 1 Imports, Cost Plus World Market, Z Gallerie, and From the Ridiculous to the Sublime. These competitors...

The last line in this paragraph should give a summary statement of who you are and why you are a strong fit for the position. Your middle paragraph (or two) should consist of specific examples from your background that would be of greatest interest to the company and consequently create the “notion of fit.” Do not just make broad generalizations about your skill set – any assertions about your skills have to be backed up with specific examples of how/why you have developed those skills. Focus on your skills and accomplishments and how they could contribute to the company, but do not simply restate what is on your resume. Demonstrate that you know about the organization and the industry. If you are a career changer, it is essential to clearly state your transferable skills from previous experience that directly...

...leadership as expressed in service to others for the common benefit of humanity. In 2009, Hariri Canadian University (HCU) started its MBA program in 2009, with only 7 students enrolled in class. It offered MBA education with one emphasis which is General Management. Although HCU’s MBA merely has a history of 3 years, it has already gained a good reputation. Today in 2012, the registration rates show an increase as the number of students reached 26. MBA applicants are increasing slowly. Two fundamental reasons contribute to this increase. On one hand, MBA is needed in the workplace. More students are choosing MBA due to pressures from their current jobs. On the other hand, the Lebanese culture regards education as a vital tool for progress and social welfare. The achievement MBA is winning wide social acceptance and is said to improve education quality. Although HCU is ranked as the 11th among the top universities in Lebanon, maintaining a good position at the educational industry is not easy. The educational industry in Lebanon is very competitive, having more than 41 accredited universities and vocational institutes. However, Universities in general face a difficult barrier when they plan to enter the MBA education or expand the range of its specifications because of the accreditation process and evaluation system for the qualification of MBA. Staying Ahead of the Game

...ahead of the game by Marketing ON 20 February 2013 As the digital economy comes of age and the marketing disciplines struggle to adapt, we ask four senior practitioners about their professional evolution, how they stay up to date with the changes in their respective professions and what they look for in potential hires. David Redhill Partner and chief marketing officer Deloitte When you started your marketing career what was the digital component of your discipline and role like? I started my marketing career in a computer company, ICL, in 1981 – before desktop computers or even word processors were available to a junior PR and marketing officer. So that meant, ironically, that I was publicising and marketing a digital product in an analogue way. I would type up my press releases on an old IBM golf ball typewriter and hand draw my presentations on marketing strategy on plastic slides for overhead projection – so my marketing career really started in the pre-digital age. Dang, am I really that old?! What comprised your original education? I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in communications at the NSW Institute (now University) of Technology. It gave me a superb grounding in all aspects of media and communication – production, script writing, print, radio and television journalism, mass communication theory, and psychology, music and mass culture, professional writing, radio drama, etc etc. To this day I use just about all of those skills in my marketing career. The funny...
